ABSTRACT The strawberry cultivar ‘Pircinque’ was developed by the breeding program of Consiglio per la Ricerca in Agricoltura e l’Analisi dell’Economia Agraria - Centro di Olivicoltura, Frutticoltura e Agrumicoltura (CREA-OFA-FRF), an Italian research entity, and introduced in Brazil in 2013 by the Centro de Ciências Agroveterinárias da Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina (CAV-UDESC). In the breeding program in which it originated, ‘Pircinque’ was selected for plant rusticity and resistance to soil pathogens. It can be cultivated where soil sterilization techniques are not used. In Brazil, the cultivation of ‘Pircinque’ has shown to be promising in the major strawberry producing regions. The main characteristics that allowed the development of this cultivar among the growers were plant vigor, productivity, rusticity, flavor, pulp firmness, crispness, sweetness and fruit color. When grown with excessive nitrogen fertilization fruit sensitivity to Botrytis cinerea fungal attack has been found, and a high vegetative plant growth. Due to fruits peculiarity, many growers make differentiated sales, adding value to quality product. Also, due to the high post-harvest period, many growers allocate part of the production to more distant locations. These characteristics are determinant for the cultivar Pircinque be distinguishable from other strawberry cultivars already marketed in Brazil. The cultivar was registered at the Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento (MAPA) in 2016, and the commercialization of plants started in 2017 with five nurseries accredited to produce and market ‘Pircinque’ plants throughout Brazil.

Twelve strawberry cultivars established in matted row plots in 1993 were treated with insecticides for tarnished plant bug or left untreated for the 1994, 1995, and 1996 seasons. `Honeoye', `Cavendish', and `Oka' had the highest yields of marketable fruit. `Jewel', `Chambly', and `Kent' had lower, but acceptable, yields. `Lateglow', `Blomidon', `Seneca, NY1424', `Settler', and `Governor Simcoe' had lower yields than other varieties. Tarnished plant bug populations were very low during the 1994 and 1996 seasons, and thus feeding pressure may have been too low for any differences in susceptibility between varieties to be expressed. In 1995, when tarnished plant bug feeding pressure was greatest, `Oka', `Cavendish', and `Honeoye' had the lowest injury levels. `Kent' and `Lateglow' had the highest levels of injury. Insecticide sprays significantly reduced the percent of injured fruit for most cultivars, but did not significantly increase the weight of marketable fruit harvested. This is due to injury being most prevalent on lower order, and thus smaller, fruit. Cultivars that produced high yields, had low injury levels, and had the least difference between sprayed and unsprayed treatments are most likely to have resistance to tarnished plant bug injury. `Oka', `Cavendish', and `Honeoye' were the most promising cultivars in this regard.

Nitrogen treatments from 0.15 to 0.90 kg of nitrogen and cultivation treatments from zero to three shallow rotovations were applied in a split-plot design to 30-year-old McIntosh apple trees growing in irrigated grass sod.Fruit quality was very largely unaffected by the treatments. Pressure test after harvest was reduced from 6.61 to 6.44 kg (P = 0.10) as nitrogen increased. Number of rots increased from 2.7 to 3.9 per 60-fruit sample with increasing nitrogen. Titratable acidity and soluble solids after harvest and pressure test, titratable acidity, soluble solids, stem-cavity browning and core flush in tests after storage were all unchanged. In addition, none of these tests were affected by cultivation except pressure test, which decreased with more cultivation (P = 0.10).Yield was not changed by either the nitrogen or the cultivation treatments, and terminal length increased only slightly with more cultivation. However, nitrogen concentration in the leaf was increased from 1.90 to 1.98% by the nitrogen treatments and from 1.83 to 1.98% by increasing cultivation. Extra Fancy grade was reduced and C grade increased by increasing nitrogen (P = 0.10), but cultivation had no effect.The conclusion is drawn that grass sod can very largely eliminate the effect of widely different nitrogen fertilization levels on McIntosh apple, and that moderate cultivation changes this effect only slightly. In many mature orchards of high initial fertility, nitrogen fertilizer may be required in only small amounts or even not at all for optimum fruit color.

ABSTRACT The production of horticultural crops in no-tillage and in rotation with cover crops reduces the dependency in nitrogen fertilizer, due to increased soil organic matter and by biological fixation performed by legumes. Thus, the aim of this work was to study rates of nitrogen fertilization and cover crops in the agronomic performance of tomato and broccoli grown under no-tillage. The experiment was conducted in a split plot design with four replications. Treatments consisted of cover crops, sunn hemp and millet, and four rates of nitrogen fertilization (0, 50, 100 and 200 kg/ha of nitrogen), for both the tomato and broccoli crops. All soil management was performed in no-tillage. For tomato crops we evaluated the plant growth, the nitrate concentration of sprouts and fruits and yield of commercial and non commercial fruits. For broccoli we evaluated plant growth and yield. There was an interaction effect between cover crop and nitrogen rates to tomato growth measured at 100 days after transplanting, for plant height, number of fruit bunches, dry mass of leaves and diameter of the stalk. The tomato commercial fruit number and yield showed maximum values with 137 and 134 kg/ha of N respectively, on the sunn hemp straw. The nitrate concentration of the tomato sprouts was linearly increasing with the increase of nitrogen rates, when grown on the millet straw. For broccoli production, the maximum fresh mass of commercial inflorescence was with 96 kg/ha of N, when grown on the millet straw.

<p>The cultivated strawberries, Fragaria x ananassa and Fragaria vesca, are the most economically-important softfruit species. F x ananassa and F vesca, both diploid (2n=2x=14) relatives of the commercial octoploid strawberry, are an attractive model for functional genomics research in Rosaceae. Its small genome size, short reproductive cycle, and facile vegetative and seed propagation make F. x annassa and F.vesca a promising candidates for forward and reverse genetics experiments. In order to determine their genetic differences in more detail, chromosome characterization of the two strawberry cultivars was investigated. A method used for chromosome slides in this research was a squash method with modification in pre-treatment. The result showed Fragaria x ananassa had (2n = 4x = 28) chromosome number is 28 and Fragaria vesca had (2n = 2x = 14) chromosome number is 14. The time of mitotic that both strawberry cultivars was similar at 7 to 8.30 am. In addition, mixoploid cells were found in both strawberry cultivar indicating that these cultivars had been treated by mutagenic agents for a breeding program.</p><p><br /><strong>Keywords</strong> : Fragaria, chromosome, mitotic</p>

AbstractThe results of a two-year research project into burley tobacco are reported and discussed. Three irrigation levels (40, 80 and 120% restitution of evapotranspiration (ET)) were factorially combined with four levels of nitrogen fertilisation (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha). Leaf area, leaf and stem dry matter and root development were measured. We monitored the water status of the 0-90 cm soil layer, the plants and stomatal resistance. Relations were also studied between leaf turgor pressure and plant growth, between the irrigation regime and plant water status, and between root and shoot development. Finally, water use efficiency (WUE) and quality and quantity of cured leaves yields were evaluated. Nitrogen fertilisation did not affect plant water status, although it promoted plant growth, both in terms of leaf area and leaf and stem dry matter, and induced a yield increase in quantity and quality. Our trial showed little interaction between nitrogen fertilization level and water regime. Under such agronomic condition, the margins for increasing plant growth with nitrogen fertilization are limited, which is why application of nitrogen rates in excess of 160 kg haappear inadvisable. The difference in irrigation volumes led to a different soil water content which affected plant water status, stomatal functioning, plant growth, both in the roots and shoots, yield and quality of the cured leaves. The latter did not vary with the increase in water volume, while yield increased. Water use efficiency increased as the irrigation volume decreased and varied during the cropping cycle, increasing until early bloom, then decreasing. Relations between leaf turgor pressure and plant growth highlighted the different response of plants subjected to water stress compared with non-stressed plants.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of plant growth regulators for enhancing fruit color of 'Gala Standard' apples (Malus domestica). The experiment was carried out in the 2015 and 2016 crop seasons. The treatments consisted of water, as a control; 300 mg L-1 ethephon, as a positive control; 400 mg L-1 prohydrojasmonate; and 400 mg L-1 abscisic acid. Flesh firmness, soluble solids content, fruit weight, and red color were assessed after harvest. Plant growth regulators enhanced red color of fruit and chlorophyll degradation. Prohydrojasmonate and abscisic acid did not reduce flesh firmness, in the 2016 season.
