As a part of the Environmental Characterization of the Campos Basin project, we obtained samples from the continental slope benthos. As a consequence, specimens of Tindariopsis aeolata (Dall, 1889) and Tindariopsis agathida (Dall, 1889) were found. These species show prodissoconch surface sculpture patterns that were never seen for species of Tindariopsis. The presence of this kind of sculpture in the type species of the genus, T. agathida, adds diagnostic characters to the genus. T. agathida and T. aeolata are typical from the Caribbean Realm (Guyana and Tobago). This is the first record of T. aeolata in the southernmost area of the Atlantic Ocean, and also the shallowest record (1000 m) for this species. With this finding of specimens from the Bacia de Campos, the distribution of T. agathida can now be extended in the Brazilian coast from 7º to 22º S.

Despite the increasing number of reports on the deep-sea molluscs from the south-western Atlantic, we know very little about the protobranchs. The lack of information on the protobranch Pelecypoda off southern Brazil is reflected in the genusYoldiella. This contribution is part of an effort to increase the knowledge about this group off the Brazilian coast. Eight species ofYoldiellaare recognized here. ForYoldiella biguttata, previously reported from Brazil, the known distribution is extended southwards to the Campos Basin. ForYoldiella similisthis is the first record in the western Atlantic Ocean. ForYoldiella extensaandYoldiellaaff.jeffreysithis is the first record for Brazil. Four previously unknown species are described,Yoldiella lapernoisp. nov.,Yoldiella paranapuaensissp. nov.,Yoldiella arariboiasp. nov. andYoldiella curupirasp. nov. Considering only conchological features for the Atlantic species we could propose some clusters of species ofYoldiella.

Amphipod material collected from Brazil on Ilha do Arvoredo, (Santa Catarina), Campos Basin, (Rio de Janeiro) and Espírito Santo Basin (Espírito Santo) in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean yielded new taxonomic findings for the subfamily Phtisicinae Vassilenko, 1968. Hemiproto wigleyi McCain, 1968, previously recorded from the Gulf of Mexico to the Caribbean Sea, is herein redescribed and recorded for the first time from the Brazilian coast. The type material of Phtisica verae Quitete, 1979, a poorly described species recorded from Brazil and based only on its original description, was examined and considered herein as a junior synonym of P. marina Slabber, 1769, a well-known and widely distributed species from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, Phtisica marina is redescribed, with its two morphotypes of male gnathopod two, and compared with previous descriptions. The geographic distribution of both H. wigleyi and P. marina is provided.

The nudibranch Flabellina dana Millen and Hamann, 2006 is reported from two localities in the northeastern Brazilian coast. These are the first records of this species, previously recorded from localities in the Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea, in South Atlantic Ocean, extending its known geographic distribution more than 3500 km southward.

Biogeographic and taxonomic knowledge on planktonic mollusks, specifically on Pterotracheoidea (also known as heteropods or sea elephants) in tropical oceans, is still incomplete. In this paper we report the first record of the heteropod Firoloida desmarestia Lesueur (1817) on waters off the Northeast Brazilian continental slope and Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and extend its geographic distribution in the tropical Atlantic. We provide new detailed digital image and descriptions of this highly fragile and transparent gelatinous species. Samples were taken in the context of the ‘ABRACOS’ (Acoustic along the Brazilian Coast) project using bongo nets. Out of 96 samples analyzed, six specimens were recorded in five samples, three at Fernando de Noronha, and three off the Northeast Brazilian coast. The present study extends the range of distribution of F. desmarestia to 3°S-9°Sin the western the Tropical Atlantic and highlights the importance of detailed studies on large-sized gelatinous plankton biodiversity in tropical oceans. Keywords: Tropical oceanic islands, Continental slope, zooplankton, heteropods, Pterotracheidae.

Specimens of Bentharca asperula (Dall, 1881) were obtained from deep waters of the coasts of the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo States, and their shells described, illustrated and compared with descriptions and illustrations obtained from the literature. This species has a small strongly inequilateral shell, trapezoidal in outline and expanded ventro-posteriorly; their umbos are placed at about 1/3 of the anterior length of their straight hinge line. The external sculpture consists of irregular spaced concentric ridges, intercepted by fine radiating striae; the periostracum is hairy, forming a cover as a thatch. Hinge teeth are small, disposed in two series interrupted by the ligament. With this finding of living specimens from the Bacia de Campos, the distribution of B. asperula can now be extended in the Brazilian coast, confirming its wide spread in the Atlantic Ocean.

In order to investigate the Chinese representatives from two genera of the tribe Oodini LaFerté-Sénectère, 1851, twenty-three Palaearctic and Oriental species of the genera Lachnocrepis LeConte, 1853 and Oodes Bonelli, 1810 are taxonomically reviewed. Because the species in question share a high degree of morphological similarity they are grouped in the “Oodes generic group”. The character-analysis showed that seven species belong to Oodes, including five species to Oodes s.str. and two species to Lachnocrepis (downgraded to subgenus). The remaining sixteen species are classified in three genera: ten species in Pseudoodes gen. n. (type species: Oodes cribristernis Bates, 1892), two species in Sundaoodes gen. n. (type species: Sundaoodes hainanensis sp. n.), and four species in Nothoodes gen. n. (type species: Oodes angustatus Lorenz, 2005). The taxa of Oodes s.str. and Pseudoodes gen. n. are arranged in two and four species groups, respectively.                Eleven species from three genera, including six new to science, are found in China: Oodes (Oodes) echigonus Habu & Baba, 1960, Oodes (Lachnocrepis) desertus Motschulsky, 1858, Oodes (Lachnocrepis) japonicus (Bates, 1873), Pseudoodes cribristernis (Bates, 1892) (first record for China), Pseudoodes rambouseki (Jedlička, 1931), Pseudoodes ampliusculus, sp. n. (type locality: Mingfenggu Valley, Jiangfengling Mountains, Hainan), Pseudoodes emeishanicus, sp. n. (type locality: Xixinsuo Temple, Emei Shan, Leshan City, Sichuan), Pseudoodes hunanensis, sp. n. (type locality: Xiaozhuangping, Tianping Shan, Sangzhi County, Hunan), Pseudoodes leigongshanicus, sp. n. (type locality: Xijiang Town, Leigong Shan, Leishan County, Guizhou), Pseudoodes tianlinensis, sp. n. (type locality: Cenwanglao Shan, Tianlin County, Guangxi), and Sundaoodes hainanensis, sp. n. (type locality: Nada Town, Danzhou City, Hainan). Two further new species, Sundaoodes kalimantanensis, sp. n. (type locality: Bukit Liang Mount, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia) and Nothoodes bharat, sp. n. (type locality: Dwarakapuram Village, Naidupet Mandal, Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh, India), are also described.                The following new synonymies are proposed: Oodes parallelus Motschulsky, 1858, syn. n. of Oodes helopioides (Fabricius, 1792); Oodes parallelogrammus Motschulsky, 1858, syn. n. of Oodes helopioides (Fabricius, 1792); Oodes prolixus Bates, 1873, syn. n. of Oodes desertus Motschulsky, 1858; Simous viridissimus Louwerens, 1951, syn. n. of Pseudoodes coelestinus (Chaudoir, 1882). The synonymy of Oodes hahni Reitter, 1908 with Oodes desertus Motschulsky, 1858 is confirmed. Also, the following new combinations are introduced: Oodes japonicus (Bates, 1873), comb. n. of Lachnocrepis japonica Bates, 1873; Pseudoodes vicarius (Bates, 1873), comb. n. of Oödes vicarius Bates, 1873; Pseudoodes coelestinus (Chaudoir, 1882), comb. n. of Oodes coelestinus Chaudoir, 1882; Pseudoodes subcoriaceus (Chaudoir, 1882), comb. n. of Oodes subcoriaceus Chaudoir, 1882; Pseudoodes cribristernis (Bates, 1892), comb. n. of Oodes cribristernis Bates, 1892; Pseudoodes rambouseki (Jedlička, 1931), comb. n. of Holosoma rambouseki Jedlička, 1931; Nothoodes taprobanae (Andrewes, 1923), comb. n. of Oodes taprobanae Andrewes, 1923; Nothoodes longus (Andrewes, 1940), comb. n. of Oodes longus Andrewes, 1940; Nothoodes angustatus (Lorenz, 1998), comb. n. of Oodes angustatus Lorenz, 1998. Specimens of the hydromedusa Cnidocodon leopoldi Bouillon, 1978 were collected in waters off the northeast Brazilian coast between 7.4°S, 34.3°W and 8.7°S, 34.8°W. The genus can be distinguished from other anthomedusae by the presence of four marginal perradial bulbs having an adaxial nematocyst cushion and branched capitate tentacles, an umbrella with scattered nematocysts, and gonads around a cylindrical manubrium shorter than the umbrella. Specimens were assigned to C. leopoldi due the tentacles with 4-5 branches and the absence of ocelli on tentacle bulbs differing from the congeneric Cnidocodon ocellata Huang, Xu, Lin & Qiu, 2008. This study represents the first record of the species in the Atlantic Ocean.

The coccolithophorid Scyphosphaera apsteinii is here reported for the first time from waters off the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula. Scypho­sphaera apsteinii is the type species of the genus Scyphosphaera and had hitherto been recorded only in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean Seas. Specimens were found in samples collected in nets off Isla de Guadalupe in January 2013. This recording thus extends the geographical distribution of S. apsteinii from the Central Pacific (Hawaii) to the Eastern Pacific (NW Mexico).

Here we describe in detail two crustose coralline red algal (CCA) species newly reported for the southern Atlantic: Porolithon improcerum and Mesophyllum macroblastum. Porolithon improcerum was recorded on the remote oceanic island of Martim Vaz (ca. 1,200 km off the Brazilian Coast) and M. macroblastum on the Cagarras Archipelago (ca. 5 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro city). Within the genus Porolithon, P. improcerum is characterized by thin vegetative thallus composed mostly of two cell layers and thalli forming several applanate branches overgrowing one another. Within the genus Mesophyllum, M. macroblastum is characterized by bearing volcano-like multiporate tetrasporangial conceptacles with a raised rim and sunken central pore plate in addition to pore canals of conceptacles being lined by cells that are similar in size and shape to other roof cells. While, P. improcerum has previously been reported for the northern Atlantic Ocean, this study represents the first report of M. macroblastum for the Atlantic Ocean.

During the program “Environmental Characterization of the Campos Basin, RJ, Brazil”, carried out from 2001 to 2003,117 stations were sampled on the continental slope of the Campos Basin off southeast Brazil, by the Research Vessel“Astro-Garoupa”. The samples were taken on soft bottoms at depths from 700 to 1950 m, with a 0.25 m2 box corer or bydredging with a Charcot dredge. Mollusks were present at all of the stations, and among the Gastropoda the Conoideashowed the highest diversity. Here we present the results obtained for the most abundant family, Raphitomidae. We found21 species in eight genera: Famelica, Eubela, Xanthodaphne, Magnella, Gymnobela, Pleurotomella, Aliceia andNeopleurotomoides. The last two genera are reported here for the first time in the South Atlantic Ocean. Among the 21species two had been previously reported for this region: Magnella malmii (Dall, 1889) and M. extensa (Dall, 1881).Three species had been reported for Brazil, but the new finds expand their known geographical distribution: Eubelalimacina (Dall, 1881), Famelica mirmidina (Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1986) and Pleurotomella cala (Watson, 1885).Twelve species are reported for the first time in the South Atlantic: Aliceia aenigmatica Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1897,Xanthodaphne dalmasi (Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1897), Xanthodaphne araneosa (Watson, 1881), Magnella watsoni(Dautzenberg, 1889), Gymnobela chyta (Watson, 1881), G. atypha (Bush, 1893), Gymnobela bairdii (Verrill & Smith,1884), Gymnobela blakeana Dall, 1881, Pleurotomella perpauxilla (Watson, 1881), P. bureaui (Dautzenberg & Fischer,1897), P. cf. anceyi (Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1897) and P. coelorhaphe (Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1896). Four species arenew to science and are described here: Neopleurotomoides aembe, Xanthodaphne pichi, Gymnobela xaioca and Pleurotomella ybessa.
