ABSTRACTThis research presents an alternative way to perform a bridge inspection, which considers the dynamics parameters from the structure. It shows an experimental phase with use of a mobile phone to extract the accelerations answers from two concrete bridges, from those records is feasible to obtain natural frequencies using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).Numerical models with uses finite element model (FEM) allow to determine the natural frequencies from the two concrete bridges and compare with the experimental phase of each one. The final results shows it's possible to use mobiles phones to extract vibration answers from concrete bridges and define the structural behavior of bridges from natural frequencies, this procedure could be used to evaluate bridges with lower costs.

Due to their characteristics and lower maintenance cost, lightweight aluminum structures have been widely used for manufacturing deck structures. When this type of structure is developed, the natural frequencies for the unloaded deck may increase, while the natural frequencies for loaded decks are most likely to decrease and new problems of vibration and damping may appear. In addition, it has already been shown by the authors that compared to the load effects of normal cargo, the dynamic structural behavior of a vehicle-loaded deck is different due to the participation of vehicle vibrations. The current paper presents a modal analysis by both testing and finite element (FE) calculation for a lightweight deck using aluminum panels. By comparing the results between the unloaded and car-loaded cases, it is shown how vehicle loading influences the dynamic structural behavior of the deck structures. The authors report that an aluminum panel mechanically connected to a steel frame may participate in some mode shapes of vibrations that significantly increase the corresponding damping ratio. The reasonably good agreement between modal testing results and FE calculations validates the finite element model, which may then be used for further dynamic analysis. The authors found that the spring-damping systems of car suspension and tires can interfere in the dynamic transmission of the vehicle mass into the deck structure. The study enables structural engineers interested in the design of car carriers to have a better understanding of how the vehicles parked on decks can influence the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle deck systems.

Abstract A simulation study has been performed on the influence of experimental errors on the accuracy of finite element model corrections. The impact of measurement uncertainties on the sub-structure correction factors, natural frequencies, and mode shape correlation is investigated using simulated modal data. Different numerical models are used to assess the effects of modelization error magnitudes and locations.

We examine an application of Acoustic Emission (AE) technique for a probabilistic analysis in time and space of earthquakes, in order to preserve the valuable Italian Renaissance Architectural Complex named “The Sacred Mountain of Varallo.” Among the forty-five chapels of the Renaissance Complex, the structure of the Chapel XVII is of particular concern due to its uncertain structural condition and due to the level of stress caused by the regional seismicity. Therefore, lifetime assessment, taking into account the evolution of damage phenomena, is necessary to preserve the reliability and safety of this masterpiece of cultural heritage. A continuous AE monitoring was performed to assess the structural behavior of the Chapel. During the monitoring period, a correlation between peaks of AE activity in the masonry of the “Sacred Mountain of Varallo” and regional seismicity was found. Although the two phenomena take place on very different scales, the AE in materials and the earthquakes in Earth’s crust, belong to the same class of invariance. In addition, an accurate finite element model, performed with DIANA finite element code, is presented to describe the dynamic behavior of Chapel XVII structure, confirming visual and instrumental inspections of regional seismic effects.

The dynamic analysis has been successfully used to predict the pavement response based on the finite element modeling, during which the stiffness and mass matrices have been established well, whereas the method to determine the damping matrix based on Rayleigh damping is still under development. This article presents a novel method to determine the two parameters of the Rayleigh damping for dynamic modeling in pavement engineering. Based on the idealized shear beam model, a more reasonable method to calculate natural frequencies of different layers is proposed, by which the global damping matrix of the road pavement can be assembled. The least squares method is simplified and used to calculate the frequency-independent damping. The best-fit Rayleigh damping is obtained by only determining the natural frequencies of the two modal. Finite element model and in-situ field test subjected by the same falling weight deflectometer pulse loads are performed to validate the accuracy of this method. Good agreements are noted between simulation and field in-situ results demonstrating that this method can provide a more accurate approach for future finite element modeling and back-calculation.

The dynamic characteristics of machine tool may directly affect its machining capability, which is analyzed to improve the machining precision and efficiency. In this paper, the 3D finite element model of main components turn-milling center is established by using ANSYS software, and then spindle box of turn-milling center is analyzed and optimized; the natural frequencies and vibration models are obtained after analysis, which guarantee the design requirement of the machining center. Therefore it is significant to improve the design quality of machining center by using FEA software in the design process.

Prestressed concrete bridges with corrugated steel webs have emerged as a new form of steel-concrete composite bridges with remarkable advantages compared with the traditional ones. However, the assumption that plane sections remain plane may no longer be valid for such bridges due to the different behavior of the constituents. The sandwich beam theory is extended to predict the flexural vibration behavior of this type of bridges considering the presence of diaphragms, external prestressing tendons and interaction between the web shear deformation and flange local bending. To this end, a [Formula: see text] beam finite element is formulated. The proposed theory and finite element model are verified both numerically and experimentally. A comparison between the analyses based on the sandwich beam model and on the classical Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko models reveals the following findings. First of all, the extended sandwich beam model is applicable to the flexural vibration analysis of the bridges considered. By letting [Formula: see text] denote the square root of the ratio of equivalent shear rigidity to the flange local flexural rigidity, and L the span length, the combined parameter [Formula: see text] appears to be more suitable for considering the diaphragm effect and the interaction between the shear deformation and flange local bending. The diaphragms have significant effect on the flexural natural frequencies and mode shapes only when the [Formula: see text] value of the bridge falls below a certain limit. For a bridge with an [Formula: see text] value over a certain limit, the flexural natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained from the sandwich beam model and the classical Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko models tend to be the same. In such cases, either of the classical beam theories may be used.

The model tuning through sensitivity analysis is a prominent procedure to assess the structural behavior and dynamic characteristics of cable-stayed bridges. Most of the previous sensitivity-based model tuning methods are automatic iterative processes; however, the results of recent studies show that the most reasonable results are achievable by applying the manual methods to update the analytical model of cable-stayed bridges. This paper presents a model updating algorithm for highly redundant cable-stayed bridges that can be used as an iterative manual procedure. The updating parameters are selected through the sensitivity analysis which helps to better understand the structural behavior of the bridge. The finite element model of Tatara Bridge is considered for the numerical studies. The results of the simulations indicate the efficiency and applicability of the presented manual tuning method for updating the finite element model of cable-stayed bridges. The new aspects regarding effective material and structural parameters and model tuning procedure presented in this paper will be useful for analyzing and model updating of cable-stayed bridges.

In order to study the dynamic characteristics of a super-long-span cable-stayed bridge which is semi-floating system, the spatial finite element model of this cable-stayed bridge was established in ANSYS based on the finite element theory.Modal solution was conducted using subspace iteration method, and natural frequencies and vibration modes were obtained.The dynamic characteristics of this super-long-span cable-stayed bridge were then analyzed.Results showed that the super-long-span cable-stayed bridge of semi-floating system has long basic cycle, low natural frequencies, dense modes and intercoupling vibration modes.

The natural frequencies of circular saws limit the operating speeds of the saws. Current industry methods of increasing natural frequency include pretensioning, where plastic deformation is induced into the saw. To better model the saw, the finite element model is compared to current software for steel saws; C-SAW, a software program that calculates frequencies for stiffened circular saws. Using C-SAW and the finite element method the results are compared and the finite element method is validated for steel saws.

The methods of direct perturbation for finite element models of thin-walled engineering constructions for sensitivity analysis of their strength, stiffness and dynamic characteristics to the change in their thickness are proposed. The approach for prediction of distribution for natural frequencies migration as result of change in their thickness are presented. The applicability of the linearized models to determine displacements, stresses and natural frequencies slightly thinned design compared to the nominal (original) are shown. The examples of test problems are given.
