In this work, we examine the effect of wall slip for a gravity-driven flow of a Newtonian fluid in a partially filled circular pipe. An analytical solution is available for the no-slip case, while a numerical method is used for the case of flow with wall slip. We note that the partially filled circular pipe flow contains a free surface. The solution to the Navier–Stokes equations in such a case is a symmetry of a pipe flow (with no free surface) with the free surface as the symmetry plane. Therefore, we note that the analytical solution for the partially filled case is also the exact solution for fully filled lens and figure 8 shaped pipes, depending on the fill level. We find that the presence of wall slip increases the optimal fill height for maximum volumetric flow rate, brings the “velocity dip” closer to the free surface, and increases the overall flow rate for any fill. The applications of the work are twofold; the analytical solution may be used to verify numerical schemes for flows with a free surface in partially filled circular pipes, or for pipe flows in lens and figure 8 shaped pipes. Second, the work suggests that flows in pipes, particularly shallow filled pipes, can be greatly enhanced in the presence of wall slip, and optimal fill levels must account for the slip phenomenon when present.

We report an experimental investigation of a novel, high performance ultrathin manifold microchannel heat sink. The heat sink consists of impinging liquid slot-jets on a structured surface fed with liquid coolant by an overlying two-dimensional manifold. We developed a fabrication and packaging procedure to manufacture prototypes by means of standard microprocessing. A closed fluid loop for precise hydrodynamic and thermal characterization of six different test vehicles was built. We studied the influence of the number of manifold systems, the width of the heat transfer microchannels, the volumetric flow rate, and the pumping power on the hydrodynamic and thermal performance of the heat sink. A design with 12.5 manifold systems and 25 μm wide microchannels as the heat transfer structure provided the optimum choice of design parameters. For a volumetric flow rate of 1.3 l/min we demonstrated a total thermal resistance between the maximum heater temperature and fluid inlet temperature of 0.09 cm2 K/W with a pressure drop of 0.22 bar on a 2×2 cm2 chip. This allows for cooling power densities of more than 700 W/cm2 for a maximum temperature difference between the chip and the fluid inlet of 65 K. The total height of the heat sink did not exceed 2 mm, and includes a 500 μm thick thermal test chip structured by 300 μm deep microchannels for heat transfer. Furthermore, we discuss the influence of elevated fluid inlet temperatures, allowing possible reuse of the thermal energy, and demonstrate an enhancement of the heat sink cooling efficiency of more than 40% for a temperature rise of 50 K.

A turbine flowmeter is employed in this study in connection with offshore oil field development, in order to measure simultaneously both the volumetric flow rates of air-water two-phase mixture. Though a conventional turbine flowmeter is generally used to measure the single-phase volumetric flow rate by obtaining the rotational rotor speed, the method proposed additionally reads the pressure drop across the meter. After the pressure drop and rotor speed measured are correlated as functions of the volumetric flow ratio of the air to the whole fluid and the total volumetric flow rate, both the flow rates are iteratively evaluated with the functions on the premise that the liquid density is known. The evaluated flow rates are confirmed to have adequate accuracy, and thus the applicability of the method to oil fields.

Advance of an electronic technology has caused the increase of heat generation density for semiconductors densely integrated. Thermal management becomes more important, and a cooling system for high heat flux is required. It is extremely effective to such a demand using flow boiling heat transfer because of its high heat removal ability. To develop the cooling system for a large area at high heat flux, the cold plate structure of narrow channels with auxiliary unheated channel for additional liquid supply was devised and confirmed its validity by experiments. A large surface of 150mm in heated length and 30mm in width with grooves of an apex angle of 90 deg, 0.5mm depth and 1mm in pitch was employed. A structure of narrow rectangular heated channel between parallel plates with an unheated auxiliary channel was employed and the heat transfer characteristics were examined by using water for different combinations of gap sizes and volumetric flow rates. Five different liquid distribution modes were tested and their data were compared. The values of CHF larger than 1.9×106W/m2 for gap size of 2mm under mass velocity based on total volumetric flow rate and on the cross section area of main heated channel 720kg/m2s or 1.7×106W/m2 for gap size of 5mm under 290kg/m2s were obtained under total volumetric flow rate 4.5×10−5m3/s regardless of the liquid distribution modes. Under several conditions, the extensions of dry-patches were observed at the upstream location of the main heated channel resulting burnout not at the downstream but at the upstream. High values of CHF larger than 2×106W/m2 were obtained only for gap size of 2mm. The result indicates that higher mass velocity in the main heated channel is more effective for the increase in CHF. It was clarified that there is optimum flow rate distribution to obtain the highest values of CHF. For gap size of 2mm, high heat transfer coefficient as much as 7.4×104W/m2K were obtained at heat flux 1.5×106W/m2 under mass velocity 720kg/m2s based on total volumetric flow rate and on the cross section area of main heated channel. Also to obtain high heat transfer coefficient, it is more useful to supply the cooling liquid from the auxiliary unheated channel for additional liquid supply in the transverse direction perpendicular to the flow in the main heated channel.

This paper presents an experimental investigation on the characteristics of the fluid flow within an entire coolant channel of a low pressure (LP) turbine blade. The serpentine channel, which keeps realistic blade geometry, consists of three passes connected by a 180° sharp bend and a semi-round bend, 2 tip exits and 25 trailing edge exits. The mean velocity fields within several typical cross sections were captured using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. Pressure and flow rate at each exit were determined through the measurements of local static pressure and volume flow rate. To optimize the design of LP turbine blade coolant channels, the effect of tip ejection ratio (ER) from 180° sharp bend on the flow characteristics in the coolant channel were experimentally investigated at a series of inlet Reynolds numbers from 25,000 to 50,000. A complex flow pattern, which is different from the previous investigations conducted by a simplified square or rectangular two-pass U-channel, is exhibited from the PIV results. This experimental investigation indicated that: a) in the main flow direction, the regions of separation bubble and flow impingement increase in size with a decrease of the ER; b) the shape, intensity and position of the secondary vortices are changed by the ER; c) the mass flow ratio of each exit to inlet is not sensitive to the inlet Reynolds number; d) the increase of the ER reduces the mass flow ratio through each trailing edge exit to the extent of about 23–28% of the ER = 0 reference under the condition that the tip exit located at 180° bend is full open; e) the pressure drop through the entire coolant channel decreases with an increase in the ER and inlet Reynolds number, and a reduction about 35–40% of the non-dimensional pressure drop is observed at different inlet Reynolds numbers, under the condition that the tip exit located at 180° bend is full open.
