In experiments on mice undergone to an acute hypercapnic hypoxia and an acute hypobaric hypoxia a screening of antihypoxants among new selenium containing metal complex substances was performed after their intra-abdominal and oral introductions. It was found that substances πQ1983 and πQ2170 on both models of hypoxia make the defensive effects surpassing actions well-known antihypoxants such as amthizole and bemythil. It was shown that antihypoxiс affects of studied substances depend on their caused hypothermia. For the first time the protective action of selenium containing metal complex compounds was demonstrated after their introduction per os.

The common mechanisms of acute exogenous hypoxia formation and ways of organism adaptation to this condition are considered in the review. The characteristics of brain bioelectrical activities and its energy metabolism during acute exogenous hypoxia are described in detail. Special attention has been devoted to the problem of acute hypoxia pharmacological correction by antihypoxants with emphasis on possibility to use metal-complex compounds including variable valence metals and nature biologically active substances as hypoxprotectors. The original data confirm high efficacy of zinc-contained metal-complex antihypoxants in acute hypoxia formation. The prospects of selenium-containing metal-complexes with zinc (II) as a center of complex molecule are noted.

Complex compounds were identified in the 19th century. The formation of hexammine cobalt(III) chloride [CO (NH3)6] Cl3 which is prepared from cobalt chloride and ammonia is thefirst compound, studied and real beginning of coordination Chemistry [1]. Alfred Werner firstexplained the nature of bonding and structure of these complexes and he was awarded NoblePrize in 1913 [2]. He gave the concept of primary (ionisable) valency and secondary(unionsible) valencies of metal ion.
