A method for the prediction of seakeeping behaviour of sailing yachts has been developed. It is based on linear strip theory with some non-linear extensions. The method is capable to take into account heeling and yawing yacht hulls, yacht appendages and sails. The yacht's response amplitude operators (RAO) and added resistance in waves can be predicted for harmonic waves as well as for natural wave spectra. The method is used to study added resistance in seaways for ACC-V5 yachts of varying beam. Results are used for further VPP investigations. The AVPP velocity prediction program is used to study optimum length to beam ratio of the yachts depending on wind velocity and upwind to downwind weighting. This investigation is carried out for flat water conditions as well as for two typical wave spectra. The results show that taking into account added resistance in seaways has a strong impact on predicted performance of the yacht.

Abstract This paper presents on a non-invasive, IoT-based method for rapidly determining the presence and location of spontaneous leaks in pressurized lines transporting any type of product (e.g., oil, gas, water, etc.). Specific applications include long-distance transmission lines, gathering networks at well sites, and offshore production risers. The methodology combines proven negative pressure wave (NPW) sensing with advanced signal processing to minimize false positives and accurately identify the presence of small spontaneous leaks within seconds of their occurrence. In the case of long-distance transmission pipelines, the location of the leak can be localized to within 20-50 feet. The solution was commercialized in 2020 and has undergone extensive testing to verify its capabilities. It is currently in use by several operators, both onshore and offshore.

A lifting surface theory is developed for unsteady three-dimensional flow in rotating subsonic, transonic and supersonic annular cascades with fluctuating blade loadings. Application of a finite radial eigenfunction series approximation not only affords a clear insight into the three-dimensional structures of acoustic fields but also provides mathematical expressions advantageous to numerical work. The theory is applied to oscillating blades. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate three-dimensional effects on aerodynamic characteristics. Three-dimensional effects in supersonic cascades are generally small and strip theory predicts local aerodynamic forces as well as total aerodynamic forces with good accuracy. In transonic flow, however, the strip theory approximation breaks down near the sonic span station and three-dimensional effects are of primary importance.

Accurate prediction of the roll response is of significant practical relevance not only for ships but also ship type offshore structures such as FPSOs, FLNGs and FSRUs. This paper presents a new body-exact scheme that is introduced into a nonlinear direct time-domain based strip theory formulation to study the roll response of a vessel subjected to moderately large amplitude incident waves. The free surface boundary conditions are transferred onto a representative incident wave surface at each station. The body boundary condition is satisfied on the instantaneous wetted surface of the body below this surface. This new scheme allows capturing nonlinear higher order fluid loads arising from the radiated and wave diffraction components. The Froude-Krylov and hydrostatic loads are computed on the intersection surface of the exact body position and incident wave field. The key advantage of the methodology is that it improves prediction of nonlinear hydrodynamic loads while keeping the additional computational cost small. Physical model tests have been carried out to validate the computational model. Fairly good agreement is seen. Comparisons of the force components with fully linear and body-nonlinear models help in bringing out the improvements due to the new formulation.

PurposeA low-cost but credible method of low-subsonic flutter analysis based on ground vibration test (GVT) results is presented. The purpose of this paper is a comparison of two methods of immediate flutter problem solution: JG2 – low cost software based on the strip theory in aerodynamics (STA) and V-g method of the flutter problem solution and ZAERO I commercial software with doublet lattice method (DLM) aerodynamic model and G method of the flutter problem solution. In both cases, the same sets of measured normal modes are used. Design/methodology/approachBefore flutter computation, resonant modes are supplied by some non-measurable but existing modes and processed using the author’s own procedure. For flutter computation, the modes are normalized using the aircraft mass model. The measured mode orthogonalization is possible. The flutter calculation made by means of both methods are performed for the MP-02 Czajka UL aircraft and the Virus SW 121 aircraft of LSA category. FindingsIn most cases, both compared flutter computation results are similar, especially in the case of high aspect wing flutter. The Czajka T-tail flutter analysis using JG2 software is more conservative than the one made by ZAERO, especially in the case of rudder flutter. The differences can be reduced if the proposed rudder effectiveness coefficients are introduced. Practical implicationsThe low-cost methods are attractive for flutter analysis of UL and light aircraft. The paper presents the scope of the low-cost JG2 method and its limitations. Originality/valueIn comparison with other works, the measured generalized masses are not used. Additionally, the rudder effectiveness reduction was implemented into the STA. However, Niedbal (1997) introduced corrections of control surface hinge moments, but the present work contains results in comparison with the outcome obtained by means of the more credible software.

In this paper, multibody dynamic modeling and flutter analysis of a flexible slender vehicle are investigated. The method is a comprehensive procedure based on the hybrid equations of motion in terms of quasi-coordinates. The equations consist of ordinary differential equations for the rigid body motions of the vehicle and partial differential equations for the elastic deformations of the flexible components of the vehicle. These equations are naturally nonlinear, but to avoid high nonlinearity of equations the elastic displacements are assumed to be small so that the equations of motion can be linearized. For the aeroelastic analysis a perturbation approach is used, by which the problem is divided into a nonlinear flight dynamics problem for quasi-rigid flight vehicle and a linear extended aeroelasticity problem for the elastic deformations and perturbations in the rigid body motions. In this manner, the trim values that are obtained from the first problem are used as an input to the second problem. The body of the vehicle is modeled with a uniform free–free beam and the aeroelastic forces are derived from the strip theory. The effect of some crucial geometric and physical parameters and the acting forces on the flutter speed and frequency of the vehicle are investigated.

The bilge keel induced roll damping of an FPSO with sponsons is investigated numerically and experimentally. The influence of the bilge keel size, on the roll damping is studied. Free decay tests of a three-dimensional ship model, for three different bilge keel sizes are used to determine roll damping coefficients. The dependency of the quadratic roll damping coefficient to the bilge keel height and the vertical location of the rotation center is studied using CFD. A Navier-Stokes solver based on the Finite Volume Method is adopted for solving the laminar flow of incompressible water around a section of the FPSO undergoing forced roll oscillations in two-dimensions. The free-surface condition is linearized by neglecting the nonlinear free-surface terms and the influence of viscous stresses in the free surface zone, while the body-boundary condition is exact. An averaged center of rotation is estimated by comparing the results of the numerical calculations and the free decay tests. The obtained two-dimensional damping coefficients are extrapolated to 3D by use of strip theory argumentations and compared with the experimental results. It is shown that this simplified approach can be used for evaluating the bilge keel induced roll damping with efficiency, considering unconventional ship shapes and free-surface proximity effects.

Currently, a number of very large container ships are being built and more are on order, and some concerns have been expressed about the importance of the reduced hull girder stiffness to the wave-induced loads. The main concern is related to the fatigue life, but also a possible increase in the global hull girder loads as consequence of the increased hull flexibility must be considered. This is especially so as the rules of the classification societies do not explicitly account for the effect of hull flexibility on the global loads. In the present paper an analysis has been carried out for the 9,400 TEU container ship used as case-ship in the EU project TULCS (Tools for Ultra Large Container Ships). A non-linear time-domain strip theory is used for the hydrodynamic analysis of the vertical bending moment amidships in sagging and hogging conditions for a flexible and a rigid modelling of the ship. The theory takes into account non-linear radiation forces (memory effects) through the use of a set of higher order differential equations. The non-linear hydrostatic restoring forces and non-linear Froude-Krylov forces are determined accurately at the instantaneous position of the ship in the waves. Slamming forces are determined by a standard momentum formulation. The hull flexibility is modelled as a non-prismatic Timoshenko beam. Generally, good agreement with experimental results and more accurate numerical predictions has previously been obtained in a number of studies. The statistical analysis is done using the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) supplemented with Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, strip-theory calculations are compared to model tests in regular waves of different wave lengths using a segmented, flexible model of the case-ship and good agreement is obtained for the longest of the waves. For the shorter waves the agreement is less good. The discrepancy in the amplitudes of the bending moment can most probably be explained by an underestimation on the effect of momentum slamming in the strip-theory applied.

In the paper, a simplified six degrees of freedom mathematical model encompassing calm water maneuvering and traditional seakeeping theories is developed to simulate the ship turning circle test in regular waves. A coordinate system called the horizontal body axes system is used to present equations of maneuvering motion in waves. All corresponding hydrodynamic forces and coefficients for seakeeping are time varying and calculated by strip theory. For simplification, the added mass and damping coefficients are calculated using the constant draft but vary with encounter frequency. The nonlinear mathematical model developed here is successful in simulating the turning circle of a containership in sea trial conditions and can be extended to make the further simulation for the ship maneuvering under control in waves.
