Dental care services are available in many urban communities worldwide where discerning and sophisticated clients expect quality care. Many available studies evaluated satisfaction rather than quality of dental care; others did not reveal the patients’ perception of gaps in the quality of care. Service quality (SERVQUAL) tool assesses quality of service based on the dimensions of tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy as described by Parasuraman et al. (1985). The aim of this study was to assess the gaps in quality of dental care in a Nigerian government owned dental clinic using an unweighted SERVQUAL tool to determine the difference between expectations and perceptions of patients. Consenting patients seen during the study period were given a 32-items questionnaire divided equally between expectations and perception of quality of dental care services received. Out of 112 questionnaires analysed, patients had the most expectation for neatness (4.69 ± 0.85) and least for pain free treatment (3.76 ± 1.16). Highest perception was for knowledgeable clinic staff (4.34 ± 0.71) while support to enable staff work well was the least perceived quality (3.73 ± 0.86). Overall, among the 5 dimensions of quality, there were marked statistically significant quality gaps in assurance (p = .0001) and tangibles (p = .0006). This study showed that patients in a Nigerian government-owned dental clinic, there is need for greater attention to be paid to assurance, tangibles and reliability dimensions of service quality to improve patient perceptions.

Background: Dental health is often neglected by a vast majority of the population and has contributed to the global burden of oral diseases. Prevention of disease, disability and suffering should be a primary goal of any society that hopes to provide a decent quality of life for its people. Dental care/service utilization is an indispensable facilitator of oral health, as dental caries and gingivitis are preventable with regular access to preventive dental services. Several reasons have been attributed to use and non-use of dental services and include socio-demographic factors such as age, sex, educational attainment, and household income. Objective: To determine dental service utilization of a rural population in South-east Nigeria. Methodology: A cross sectional study of 268 participants was carried out at Ozalla Model Primary Health Centre, Ozalla Health Centre and Umueze Awkunanaw Health Centre located in Ozalla community and Umueze Awkunanaw community respectively. Ethical clearance for this study was sought and obtained. Permission was sought from the head of each health centre, while individual verbal consent was obtained from the respondents before giving out the pretested questionnaire which was interviewer-administered. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 20. Results: 126(47 %) males and 142(53%) females were seen. The age of the participants ranged from 18 - 86 years with a mean age of 32.4 ± 13.3 years. 131(48.9%) were married, 133(49.6%) were single and 4(1.5%) were divorced. 39(14.6%) had only primary level of education, 142(52.6%) secondary, 67(25.0%) tertiary and 21(7.8%) had no formal education. 64(23.9%) had utilized dental service, while 204(76.1%) had not visited a dental clinic (had not utilized dental service). The common reason for dental service utilization was dental pain. The predominant occupation was farming and small scale business/trading. P= 0.038. Conclusion: Dental health was neglected by a vast majority of the participants, The poor utilization of dental service by the respondents could be due to poor awareness, absence of dental insurance, financial constraints , lack of perceived need for dental care, economic difficulties ,socio-demographic factors such as age, sex, educational attainment, and household income. Effort needs to be applied to create better awareness and possibly increase dental clinic attendance. Emphasis should be placed on benefits of utilizing preventive dental services rather than only curative through dental awareness programms.

This program evaluation examines the effectiveness of a school-based dental clinic. A repeated-measures design was used to longitudinally examine secondary data from participants ( N = 293). Encounter intensity was developed to normalize data. Multivariate analysis of variance and Kruskal–Wallis test were used to investigate the effect of encounter intensity on the change in decay, restorations, and treatment urgency. A Pearson’s correlation was used to measure the strengths of association. Encounter intensity had a statistically significant effect on change in decay ( p = .005), restorations ( p = .000), and treatment urgency ( p = .001). As encounter intensity increased, there was a significant association with the decrease in decay (−.167), increase in restorations (.221), and reduction in referral urgency (−.188). Incorporating dental care into a school-based health center resulted in improved oral health in underserved children while overcoming barriers that typically restrict access. The collaboration of school nurses with the school-based dental clinic was an important element for maximizing student access to dental care.
