It is noteworthy that florid descriptions of interaction between linguistics and the philosophy of language are regularly inspired. In this paper, parallels have been drawn between Bakhtin’s philosophical perspectives and Hallidayan theoretical claims of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Through the analysis of Bakhtin’s theory of dialogism, heteroglossia, chronotope and metalinguistics, I argue that Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistic theory is compatible with Bakhtin’s philosophical perspectives to a great extent in terms of the close relations between speech genre and register, heteroglossia and appraisal theory as well as metalinguistics and metafunctions. It is safe to say that as a precursor, Bakhtin has a profound influence on socio-semioticians like Halliday who has expounded in linguistics.

This paper primarily attempts to provide readers with a means of analyzing texts by using an approach that is considered important by applied linguists, that of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). This work identified the similarities and differences between two texts, a movie review and a news article, that dealt with the same topic, namely, the movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. In identifying the texts’ similarities and differences, the Systemic Functional Linguistic principles of Tenor/Interpersonal Metafunction and Field/Experiential Metafunction were applied. From the interpersonal metafunction analysis, it can be concluded that both texts share similar moods and modalities. However, a closer inspection would reveal that Text 1 appears to negotiate a positive review of the film through an extensive demonstration of declarative statements that talk about the merits of the film and that of the director’s while Text 2 is more of a reportage of relevant information and interviews from the film. In terms of the Experiential metafunction, Text 1 delves on material and relational processes that advance the film, the director, and the characters, whereas Text 2 differs as it focuses more on advancing the film while putting little emphasis on the director and the movie characters.

Unlike modern narrative, which often goes into great detail in order to develop characters and themes, the narrator in the Old Testament is reticent, and the narrative is typically terse. There are many ambiguous passages involving actions of dubious propriety, resulting in readers being uncertain how to assess characters and draw ideological conclusions from their actions. It is too easy for modern readers to filter interpretive decisions through their presuppositions and values. Appraisal theory, an area of systemic functional linguistics, acts not to eliminate but to constrain the subjectivity of the interpreter and increase the transparency of the process by looking for specific linguistic signals in the text that can be presented as evidence. These instantiations are drawn mainly from the interpersonal metafunction, but also involve the textual and ideational metafunctions. J.R. Martin and P.R.R. White developed a system network through which text is processed in order to identify evaluative language; however, their work is based primarily on contemporary English texts of a rhetorical nature, such as political speeches and reviews. This article presents a modified system network, the “Narrative Appraisal Method,” adapted for Hebrew narrative texts. It operates not only at the level of the clause but also at higher levels of discourse. It takes into consideration the characteristics of narrative and the point of view of the evaluator. The article provides specific examples of the results the methodology yields from the book of Judges, focusing on situations in which pronominal forms play a relevant role.

Interpersonal or evaluative meaning has been described in systemic functional linguistics with the help of appraisal theory (Martin & White 2005), which distinguishes between different types of evaluation. One sub-system of APPRAISAL is ATTITUDE, which is further divided into APPRECIATION, JUDGEMENT and AFFECT. This paper uses corpus-linguistic evidence to investigate how far linguistic patterns support this classification, and whether they can be used as a ‘diagnostic’ for distinguishing types of ATTITUDE (as has been proposed in appraisal theory). It argues that two different aspects of APPRAISAL need to be considered: the kinds of attitudinal lexis (in terms of evaluative standards which are inscribed in this lexis) and the kinds of attitudinal targets or types of attitudinal assessment, and that this distinction has not been sufficiently considered in appraisal theory so far. A preliminary classification of attitudinal lexis is also suggested, and a new sub-category of ATTITUDE proposed (COVERT AFFECT).

Kata Kunci: teks report, transitivitas, linguistik sistemik fungsional Abstract This research aimed at investigating the most dominant of transitivity process used in report text and how it relates with the nature of report text. It employed descriptive qualitative design and applied Systemic Functional Linguistics on Transitivity. The data were 29 clauses taken from report texts used in ninth grade’s National Exam. The result of this research revealed that six types of transitivity processes found in the report texts. Yet, material (44%) and relational (31%) were found to dominate the rest of the processes. This implied that those two processes serve important roles in providing clear information and description for the readers to understand the object being described in report text. Keywords: report text, transitivity, systemic functional linguistics

This study rationally reconstructs Novalis's linguistic theory. It traces Novaliss assessment of earlier linguistic debates, illustrates Novaliss transformation of their central questions and uncovers Novaliss unique methodological proposal. It argues that in his critical engagement with Idealism, particularly regarding problems of representation and regulative positing, Novalis recognizes the need for both a philosophy of language and the artistic language designed to execute it. The paper contextualizes Novalis's linguistic appropriation and repudiation of Kant and explains how, even while Novaliss linguistic theory issues Kantianism such a challenge, it also begins to demonstrate the application of Kantian designs to linguistic philosophy. The modernity and potential of Novaliss proposal is evaluated and its significance for discussions in linguistic philosophy and aesthetics is advocated.

This article is concerned with the computational treatment of Appraisal, a Systemic Functional Linguistic theory of the types of language employed to communicate opinion in English. The theory considers aspects such as Attitude (how writers communicate their point of view), Engagement (how writers align themselves with respect to the opinions of others) and Graduation (how writers amplify or diminish their attitudes and engagements). To analyse text according to the theory we employ a weakly-supervised approach to text classification, which involves comparing the similarity of words with prototypical examples of classes. We evaluate the method's performance using a collection of book reviews annotated according to the Appraisal theory.

‘Thirukkural’ written by Thiruvalluvar, is the most well-known and highly regarded work in the history of Tamil literature. Also, it is well known for its particular structure and wording. It is a distinctive and highly appealing work. Thirukkural has been studied approaching different literary theories. This paper tries to analyse Thirukkural based on the functional method of M. A. K. Halliday, his Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Here, one chapter – Education - of 133 chapters of the Thirukkural is analyzed using Systemic Functional Linguistic framework to achieve functional groupings of the writer’s linguistic choices in order to express the meanings and find out how functional features contribute to making the poem potentially. The linguistic data collected from the Thirukkural were analyzed by using the functional analysis method. Consequently, how interpersonal relationships are created within texts, how information is organized in texts and how the ideological positions of writer are implanted in texts were shown and interpreted.

The Research analyzes how the social relationships are negotiated through the discourse of social networking sites in the form of Facebook status commenting on West Java Paragliding World Championship (WJPWC) 2019. The analysis focuses on how the participant tells her feelings about things and people through her Facebook status during the WJPWC event. By the qualitative descriptive method, the Facebook status of a paragliding legend was analyzed using the interpersonal metafunction of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics and appraisal theory of Martin and Rose. Using the interpersonal metafunction, the attitudes and judgments of the participant are evaluated based on the speech roles, mood types, and modalities used in the text. The appraisal theory is used for further evaluation to know how the feelings of the participant by evaluating (1) the kinds of attitudes (affect, judgment and appreciation), (2) the attitude resources, and (3) how the attitudes are amplified. The result showed that the participant through her four Facebook status consisted of 26 clauses used the speech roles of giving information in the mood types of declarative. By the mood types, the participant directly and explicitly showed the positive attitudes commenting on the WJPWC event and realized in several linguistic realizations. The participant who roles as the attitude resources expressed her feelings in three main types of attitudes; (1) her positive affect or feelings, (2) her positive judgment of personal and moral, and (3) her positive and negative appreciation of valuing thing during the WJPWC event. The participant also used several metaphors that play important roles in constructing her gradable feelings and emotion. Keywords: Appraisal Theory, Attitude Evaluation, Interpersonal metafunction, Systemic Functional Linguistics

Abstrak: Penerapan Modalitas Metafora Interpersona pada Ayat-Ayat Suci al-Qur’an.

Abstract:This article is the result of a descriptive qualitative research which examine to what extent the theory of Interpersonal Metaphor of mood postulated by Halliday (1994) is relevant to be applied to the verses of the Holy al-Qur’an. The Interpersonal Metaphor applied in this survey covers the three kinds of mood which constitute indicative mood, interrogative mood and imperative mood. This work, however, does not cover the Interpersonal Metaphor of modality. The result shows that some verses of the Holy al-Qur’an use the transference of mood in conveying messages: some indicative moods are expressed in the interrogative and imperative, some imperative moods in the indicative and interrogative, and some interrogative moods in the indicative and imperative. The writer maintains that Halliday’s theory of Interpersonal Metaphor can be justified as an adequate linguistic theory.

Keywords: systemic functional linguistics, interpersonal metaphor, al-Qur’an, literature
