This study aims to analyze the scientific literacy skills of high school students on PISA released items reading and science questions based on the PISA framework on the "Process Aspects" in terms of scientific literacy and reading literacy on the biological content of the material "Viruses and Bacteria". This research is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach. The instruments used were PISA questions in 2000, 2006, and 2015 which have been released (main instrument) as well as school curriculum biology questions (comparative instruments), questionnaires, and interviews. The research began to be carried out in February 2020 and began with conducting research trials conducted in schools (A). The subjects in this study were students in SMA (B) and (C) grades 10, 11, and 12 with different school curriculum characteristics, school (B) with the 2013 curriculum and school (C) with the Cambridge curriculum. Sampling was carried out using convenience sampling method. The results showed that the scientific literacy skills of school B students resulted in: 80% (grade 10), 81% (grade 11) and 75% (grade 12) in the "High" category, school C resulted in: 47% (grade 10), 51% (grade 11) and 55% (grade 12) in the "Very Low" category. The students' results in the 2013 school curriculum biology questions (B) were included in the "Very High" category, while schools (C) that used the Cambridge curriculum were included in the "Low" category. Acquisition of scientific literacy skills which is included in the "High" category is in line with the experience of students in learning in schools which as a whole uses the PBL (Problem Based Learning) method, while the acquisition of scientific literacy skills which is included in the "Low" category turns out to be less in line with students' experiences in learning. in schools that as a whole use the PjBL (Project Based Learning) method.

The emergence of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) indicates an external bias in an item. This study aims to identify items at scientific literacy skills with integrated science (SLiSIS) test that experience DIF based on gender. Moreover, it is analyzed the emergence of DIF, especially related to the test construct measured, and concluded on how far the validity of the SLiSIS test from the construct validity of consequential type. The study was conducted with a quantitative approach by using a survey or non-experimental methods. The samples of this study were the responses of the SLiSIS test taken from 310 eleventh-grade high school students in the science program from SMA 2 and SMA 3 Tegal. The DIF analysis technique used Wald Test with the Rasch model. From the findings, eight items contained DIF in a 95 % level of trust. In 99 % level of trust, three items contained DIF, items 1, 6, and 38 or 7%. The DIF is caused by differences in test-takers ability following the measured construct, so it is not a test bias. Thus, the emergence of DIF on SLiSIS test items does not threaten the construct validity of the consequential type.

Basic phylogenetics and associated “tree thinking” are often minimized or excluded in formal school curricula. Informal settings provide an opportunity to extend the K–12 school curriculum, introducing learners to new ideas, piquing interest in science, and fostering scientific literacy. Similarly, university researchers participating in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) outreach activities increase awareness of college and career options and highlight interdisciplinary fields of science research and augment the science curriculum. To aid in this effort, we designed a 6-h module in which students utilized 12 flowering plant species to generate morphological and molecular phylogenies using biological techniques and bioinformatics tools. The phylogenetics module was implemented with 83 high school students during a weeklong university STEM immersion program and aimed to increase student understanding of phylogenetics and coevolution of plants and pollinators. Student response reflected positive engagement and learning gains as evidenced through content assessments, program evaluation surveys, and program artifacts. We present the results of the first year of implementation and discuss modifications for future use in our immersion programs as well as in multiple course settings at the high school and undergraduate levels.

In the strict challenges faced by society, a paradigm shift is needed in the education system that can provide a set of 21st century skills needed by students to deal with every aspect of global life. One of them is scientific literacy. Unfortunately, the scientific literacy ability of students in Indonesia is still low. The Inquiry and SETS models have been widely applied to improve students' scientific literacy skills. However, weaknesses are found such as: students still cannot use their content knowledge to explain scientific phenomena perfectly; and the need for more in-depth inquiry activities so that students' abilities in designing and evaluating scientific investigations obtain excellent results. Therefore, innovation was created to develop the BRADeR learning model based on consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of the inquiry model and SETS as well as theoretical and empirical support. This research serves as a preliminary study in the process of developing the BRADeR model to improve students' scientific literacy skills. This study includes a needs analysis and literature review. The results show that innovation can be maintained as a basis for developing a hypothetical model of the BRADeR learning model. The syntax of the BRADeR model includes: brainstorming, reading, analyzing, decision making, and reflection. The hypothetical model of the BRADeR learning model must be tested to meet the aspects of validity, practicality, and effectiveness to improve the scientific literacy skills of junior high school students.
