in 2002 the decision was made to move the university of bristol botanic garden (ubbg) from its then current location. this move would be the third in the garden’s history. the four core collections for the new garden were selected in line with modern international policies on botanic garden management, recent research and the university of bristol’s teaching needs. the themes of these collections are evolution, rare and threatened native and local flora, useful plants and Mediterranean-type flora. this paper describes the development of the plant collection policy, the vision and concept for the new garden, together with a detailed explanation of the work to relocate the existing plant collections, and the design and establishment of the new garden.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the characteristics that define a plant collection. In 2002 Chicago Botanic Garden benchmarked the living plant collections in national and international botanic gardens and arboreta in seven countries. The result of the study revealed that there were twelve characteristics of an exemplary living collection. These were: I. Institutional Collections Policy and Development PlansII. Biodiversitas 22: 696-706.  Botanic gardens contain plant collections for the purpose primarily for ex-situ conservation, yet the public rarely appreciates these collections. As such, assessing the conservation value of botanic gardens collections is very important as an effort to increase public awareness of the importance of botanic gardens and their plant collections. This research aimed to assess the conservation value of plant collection in Bogor Botanic Gardens (BBG), Indonesia using quantitative and qualitative methods. We focused our assessment on medicinal plant collections with the habitus of tree. Conservation value of a plant collection was approached by preservation value and utilization value both quantitatively using monetary units and qualitatively using non-monetary index. Based on these two approaches, quantitatively most (91%) of the medicinal plant collections in BBG assessed in this study have a value of more than one million rupiahs, even 21% have a value of more than 100 million rupiahs, implying the high monetary value of medicinal plant collection in Bogor Botanic Gardens. Meanwhile, qualitatively, the conservation value score of a species will be strongly influenced by the existence of protection laws issued by the government and the cultural level of plants' use by the community. Our framework of assessing the conservation value of plant collections, especially those with medicinal purposes, can be replicated in other botanic gardens.

Despite the routinely conducted treatment and maintenance of garden plant collection, the monthly mortality figures of the Cibodas Botanic Gardens (CBG) plant collections remain significant. It is presumed that the microclimate has a crucial influence on plant survivorship in the field. This study aimed to analyze the effect of microclimate conditions on the mortality rate of the CBG plant collection. The study was conducted by correlating the number of mortal plants with CBG monthly microclimatic conditions from 2017 to 2018. The analyzed microclimate parameters were temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind velocity, and solar radiation. The multiple regression modeling, t-test, and Pearson correlation test (r) were utilized to measure the level of significance of the correlation (α = 0.05). The findings were shown that the maximum wind velocity was the primary unit correlated to the number of mortality. The correlation was strong positive (r = 68.8%), and significant (p-value α). We suggested anticipating the disadvantages influences of strong wind supported by other extreme microclimate units, such as heavy rain. These events frequently caused high damage to the tree and other plant collections. These are expected to be taken into a consideration by the CBG operator and management in order to forecast and mitigate the risks of future plant collection losses.

Background of the study: Website is an online media institution to promote and disseminate the information services to the public. The LIPI botanical garden website has interesting information to study, such as information of plant collections, library services, and website content. The Scanmic model can be used to analyze the appearance and information content of the botanical garden website. Purposes: to know the plant collections, library services, and website analysis results at LIPI botanical gardens, namely KR Bogor, KR Cibodas, KR Purwodadi, and KR Eka Karya Bali. Method: This type of research is descriptive – qualitative, data sources by: information retrieval on the LIPI botanical garden website, literature study, and documentation. Analysis of the website appearance and content by Scanmic model criteria, namely: screen design, content, accessibility, navigation, media use, interactivity, and consistency. Findings: The results of this study indicate that the plant collection in each botanical garden is different, and the information can be accessed through library services. The results of the Scanmic model analysis showed that of the 7 criterias of 21 indicators only 15 indicators were fulfill by the LIPI botanical garden website. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop the features and content of the LIPI botanical garden website continuosly to be more user friendly and interactive.

Botanic gardens, with their large holdings of living plants collected from around the world, are important guardians of plant biodiversity, but acquiring and curating these genetic resources is enormously expensive. For these reasons it is crucial that botanic gardens document and curate their collections in order to gain the greatest benefit from the plants in their care. Great priority is given to making detailed field notes and the process of documentation is often continued during the plants formative years when being propagated. However, for the large majority of plants this process often stops once the material is planted in its final garden location. The Data Capture Project at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is an attempt to document specific aspects of the plant collections so that the information captured can be of use to the research community even after the plants have died.
