The Conversions of the City Structure and their Influence on the Demographic Phenomena The process of socio-economic change, which started in Poland in 1989, began the series of modifications in the structure of Polish cities. These changes embrace the economic sphere and the social sphere, as well as the habitable environment. The changes occurring in Polish cities resemble the processes present in settlement systems in highly developed countries. They take place, however, with some delay which is caused by the movement from the centrally controlled economy to the market economy and all the problems associated with it.The aim of the presented article is to show the influence of occurring changes on the socio-economic development and demographic situation apparent in small towns of the Wrocław Metropolitan Area (WrMA). The attempt of evaluation of factors promoting the development was undertaken. The value of chosen characteristics was analyzed for the set of small towns of Dolnośląskie voivodship. The analysis of chosen quantities common for demographic phenomena in a longer time cross-section (1995-2008) pinpoints the irregularity of development of specific towns, which may result in negative effects for the whole area in the future.

An important problem of small towns in settlement systems is the development and the need to preserve the natural and historical environment through the use of relief, water bodies and other measures. At the stage of developing master plans of small towns, the composition of project materials should provide effective management of the formation of the urban environment and architectural and artistic appearance. To this end, it is necessary to expand the range of issues addressed in separate sections of the master plans: in particular, the scheme of formation of architectural and artistic appearance of the city should highlight the most significant compositional areas and elements of its planning structure and ways of their development; develop a system of city-wide visual landmarks and provide visual connections of the main nodes of the city with the most valuable areas of the natural landscape; to develop the concept of the color decision of architectural and spatial structure of the city; to plan creation of new axes of formation of visual perception of a kind of the city taking into account real processes of development and distribution in its territory of central functions. It is necessary to actively use the compositional possibilities of forming the main ensembles on the basis of existing areas, as well as to take into account the need to improve the quality of the architectural and spatial environment while maintaining the typological diversity of buildings. Keep in mind that the shape of the square affects the spatial orientation and sequence of the ensemble's review and perception. Specific spatial characteristics of small towns require a special approach to the development of intersettlement relations. The environment of small towns is formed mainly under the influence of external intersettlement factors. Features and principles of formation of small towns interconnected both with the significant city-center of settlement system, and rural settlements are investigated. The use of these principles in project practice will improve the public service system in small towns through group resettlement and increase the level of service to urban and rural populations.

In this article, the authors provide scientific evidence of the need to overcome established priorities in the strategy of spatial development of the Russian Federation, focused on the preferential development oflarge and major cities, prove the important role of small towns as a necessarylink in agglomerations, their inseparable "genetic" relationship with nearby centers of higher order. It highlights the prospects for identifying, shaping or restoringlocal settlement systems, as well as filling in the missing historical links of the resettlement framework, the sources of which are predetermined by historical "genetic" relationships. On the basis of consistently carried outlong-term studies, the methodology of historical and "genetic" studies of historical settlement and townplanning structure is formulated. The study reveals a variety of forms of settlement of Zaonezhye (river, lake, rural, monastic), the volost character of the territorial structure of Kargopol. The main stages of a three-level analysis of the town planning structure are presented: from settlement to settlement and street; identifying the traditional properties and fundamentals of the historical and "genetic" composition of the entire city and building the spatial-compositional system of architectural ensembles, the "genetically" inherent qualities of the town-planning structure, the spatial scale of the compositional system, the typology of buildings, module, describes the typical methods of the relationship of building and planning, information about the unique traditions of the temple architecture, including construction techniques for the construction of wooden churches, and the characteristics of residential development (scale, spatial solution, proportions), which generally gives rise to the visual image of the city, its "face", and the external manifestation of the town-planning structure reflecting the distinctive traditions of national cultures.

The article examines labor migration from small Russian towns: prevalence of the phenomenon, the direction and duration of trips, spheres of employment and earnings of migrants, social and economic benefits of migration for households. The representative surveys of households and migrant-workers by a standardized interview were conducted in four selected towns. Authors draw a conclusion about high labor spatial mobility of the population of small towns and existence of positive effects for migrant’s households and the economy of towns themselves.

This collection of essays, drawn from a three-year AHRC research project, provides a detailed context for the history of early cinema in Scotland from its inception in 1896 till the arrival of sound in the early 1930s. It details the movement from travelling fairground shows to the establishment of permanent cinemas, and from variety and live entertainment to the dominance of the feature film. It addresses the promotion of cinema as a socially ‘useful’ entertainment, and, distinctively, it considers the early development of cinema in small towns as well as in larger cities. Using local newspapers and other archive sources, it details the evolution and the diversity of the social experience of cinema, both for picture goers and for cinema staff. In production, it examines the early attempts to establish a feature film production sector, with a detailed production history of Rob Roy (United Films, 1911), and it records the importance, both for exhibition and for social history, of ‘local topicals’. It considers the popularity of Scotland as an imaginary location for European and American films, drawing their popularity from the international audience for writers such as Walter Scott and J.M. Barrie and the ubiquity of Scottish popular song. The book concludes with a consideration of the arrival of sound in Scittish cinemas. As an afterpiece, it offers an annotated filmography of Scottish-themed feature films from 1896 to 1927, drawing evidence from synopses and reviews in contemporary trade journals.
