ANALYSING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACTS AS A RESULT OF SYZRAN SHALE-PROCESSING REFINERY WORK

Extraction and primary processing of natural minerals have a direct human impact on the lithosphere in the following way: the area of excavation and the area covered by rock dumps of overburden and substandard rocks increase; the landscape also changes. This problem occurs on all operated deposits and exists in out-of-operation deposits. This paper performs a critical analysis of environmental implications of anthropogenic impacts as a result of Syzran shale-processing refinery work Rock dumps parameters № 1 of Mine 3 and № 2 of Mine 5/6 of ZAO "Kashpirskaya Mine" are investigated. Rock dumps depth and surface ares, conservation volume and utilization capacity are considered to be landscape modifying parametres. The research demonstrates rock dumps parameters change in the period from 1950 to 2002. The paper evaluates the degree of anthropogenic impact of dumps territories and burnt rocks burials which were formed during the extraction of oil shale at Syzran shale-processing refinery. Those rock dumps resulted in the following transformation and change of the natural system and landscape: curvature of the slopes altered, soil and vegetation cover was dislocated. The only industry capable of reducing ecological tension in the region is building industry.

The state of plant communities in areas located in the Tersko-Sulak lowland was studied by assessing phytocenotic indicators: the structure of vegetation cover, projective cover, species diversity, species abundance and elevated production, as well as automated decoding methods. There are almost no virgin soils and natural phytocenoses here; all of them have been transformed into agrocenoses (irrigated arable lands and hayfields, rice-trees and pastures). The long-term impact on pasture ecosystems of natural and anthropogenic factors leads to significant changes in the indigenous communities of this region. Phytocenoses are formed mainly by dry-steppe types of cereals with the participation of feather grass, forbs and ephemera, a semi-desert haloxerophytic shrub - Taurida wormwood. At the base of the grass stand is common coastal wormwood and Taurida wormwood - species resistant to anthropogenic influences. Anthropogenic impacts have led to a decrease in the number of species of feed-rich grain crops and a decrease in the overall productivity of pastures. Plant communities in all areas are littered with ruderal species. The seasonal dynamics of the land cover of the sites was estimated by the methods of automatic decoding of satellite images of the Landsat8 OLI series satellite for 2015, dated by the periods: spring - May 20, summer - July 23, autumn - October 20. Satellite imagery data obtained by Landsat satellite with a resolution in the multispectral image of 30 m per pixel, and in the panchromatic image - 10 m per pixel, which correspond to the requirements for satellite imagery to assess the dynamics of soil and vegetation cover. Lower resolution data, for example, NDVI MODIS, does not provide a reliable reflection of the state of soil and vegetation cover under arid conditions. In this regard, remote sensing data obtained from the Internet resource https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/ was used.

AbstractLake sediments were studied from four lakes in environmentally different areas in northern Finland. Lakes Pyykösjärvi and Kuivasjärvi are situated near roads with heavy traffic and the city of Oulu. Lakes Martinlampi and Umpilampi are small lakes in a forest area with no immediate human impact nearby. The concentration of Pb increases in the upper parts of the sedimentary columns of Lake Kuivasjärvi and Lake Pyykösjärvi. This is interpreted as being an anthropogenic effect related to heavy traffic in the area and use of Lake Pyykösjärvi as an airport during World War II. High Ni and Zn concentrations in the Lake Umpilampi sediments are caused by weathered black schists. Sediments in Lake Martinlampi show high Pb and Zn contents with increasing Pb concentrations up through the sedimentary column. The sources of these elements are probably Pb-Zn mineralization in the bedrock, Pb-Zn-rich boulders and anomalous Pb and Zn contents in till in the catchment area of the lake.

The anthropogenic impact on Keshalia river, especially on fish diversity, is very high. Over fishing with unconventional fishing methods, disposal of domestic and industrial effluents, excess use of pesticides, dumping sites of municipalities, dam construction without fish ladder across the river and mining of sands and gravels are major anthropogenic impacts on the river.

AbstractHigh latitude freshwater ecosystems are sentinels of human activity and environmental change. The lakes and ponds that characterize Arctic landscapes have a low resilience to buffer variability in climate, especially with increasing global anthropogenic stressors in recent decades. Here, we show that a small freshwater pond in proximity of the archaeological site “Native Point” on Southampton Island (Nunavut, Arctic Canada) is a highly sensitive environmental recorder. The sediment analyses allowed for pinpointing the first arrival of Sadlermiut culture at Native Point to ~ 1250 CE, followed by a dietary shift likely in response to the onset of cooling in the region ~ 1400 CE. The influence of the Sadlermiut on the environment persisted long after the last of their population perished in 1903. Presently, the pond remains a distorted ecosystem that has experienced fundamental shifts in the benthic invertebrate assemblages and accumulated anthropogenic metals in the sediment. Our multi-proxy paleolimnological investigation using geochemical and biological indicators emphasizes that direct and indirect anthropogenic impacts have long-term environmental implications on high latitude ecosystems.

<p><span>Although many studies have analyzed the impact of human interventions on European rivers over decades or centuries, researchers have rarely evaluated the geomorphological effects of these anthropogenic pressures on fluvial systems. However, quantifying anthropogenic impacts is fundamental to understanding how rivers are affected by human interventions and to improving the river management and restoration. The aim of this study is to propose a new and original qualitative method to estimate the importance of human impacts on rivers over the last three centuries using the middle Charente River as a test case. The study area is an anastomosing, low-energy and little mobile river of the lowlands of Western France. It extends from the city of Angoulême (Charente) to the city of Saintes (Charente-Maritime), with a length of approximately 100 km. The study segment has been subjected to high anthropogenic pressure since the High Middle Ages, and it was enhanced during the 19th century to facilitate navigation and terrestrial transportation, to ensure the exploitation of the water's driving force (water mills and paper mills), to maintain the local people (fishing dams and agro-pastoral uses) and to allow for flood protection. To understand and estimate the anthropogenic heritage of the Charente River, this study employed a two-stage method: 1) an inventory of the human interventions on the fluvial system through the consultation of geo-historical data (textual archives, historical maps and iconography) dating from the end of the 17th century to the 2010s and 2) an evaluation of the human impact of each human intervention, sub-category and category of intervention based on the calculation of the Cumulative Human Impact Index. The Cumulative Human Impact Index is composed of several qualitative attributes graded by an evaluator. The results allow one 1) to generate a database and typology of the human interventions affecting the middle Charente River over the long term; 2) to map the cumulative impacts of human interventions on the study area; and 3) to analyze the unitary and overall impact of each human intervention, sub-category and category of intervention on the river landscape's heritage. Finally, this study concludes with 1) a discussion of the advantages of using a qualitative methodology for the estimation of anthropogenic impacts and 2) a reflection on the use of the maps of cumulative human impacts for Charente River management and restoration.</span></p>

The increasing human impact in Romanian caves raises the urgency of publishing a correct database of the strictly-adapted cave fauna. Previous attempts at indexing cave fauna and classifying caves by using their fauna opened many questions regarding the use of an incomplete list of cave species and mixed lists of troglobionts/stygobionts with troglophiles/stygophiles for ranking caves with priority for protection. It has also become obvious that there is a need to publish a list of Romanian cave species that are under threat. Cave species in Romania (and elsewhere) are endemic on small ranges, are unique and must be considered as important units for conservation. A cave must be equally protected if it has one or more rare and strictly endemic cave species. Although not exhaustive, we here provide the first checklist of Romanian troglobionts/stygobionts developed in the framework of the DARKFOOD and GROUNDWATERISK projects, coordinated by the “Emil Racovita” Institute of Speleology, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The GIS application was used to complement the checklist of cave species with data on caves and surface environments above the caves. Until complete data on species diversity and population sizes are made available for each cave, measures of conservation can be implemented, based on the presence/absence of cave species, while classifications of caves for protection, based on the number of species, must be avoided. We also propose a list of Romanian caves with fauna that are under threat and a tentative Red List of Romanian troglobiont/stygobionts. This is the first database with identified troglobiont and stygobiont species of Romania, with a critical analysis of their distribution inside the country. A list of caves that need protection for their rare and unique species and a tentative Red List of Romanian cave fauna are also added. A total of 173 species were identified, of which 77 troglobionts and 96 stygobionts are currently registered in 366 caves. The database is divided into two parts, one part with a list of troglobionts, their revised systematic position, cave name, cave code and geographic region; and the second part with the same information on stygobionts. The database represents the contribution of many active researchers, who are the authors of this paper and of review publications of many other authors of the "Emil Racoviță" Institute of Speleology.

Intensity of land use could be considered as an indicator of rate of anthropogenic impact on landscape (CAI) and the coefficient of ecological stability (CES). These two bio-indexes are based on the land use categories. The CAI coefficient is the ratio of the sum of percentile areas of land characterized by considerable human impact in relation to the sum of percentile areas of lands with low or none anthropogenic pressure. The CES index describes the structure of land use in one unit according to land use categories weighted by given coefficients. The calculation of the complex integral index enables to know the potential of the environment, i.e. a natural resource reserve with a structure that allows self-regulation of ecosystems and expresses the environment's resistance to bearing anthropogenic loads. The aim of the study is to analyze the historical land use changes (in the period of 1845-2016) in rural areas of Southern Poland using bio-indexes such as the anthropogenic impact on landscape (CAI) and the coefficient of ecological stability (CES). The analysis led to the conclusion about the strong dynamics of changes during this period which is largely due to the growth of the percentile areas of lands with considerable human impact especially after the historical transformation in 1989 in Poland. At the same time, the attention should be paid to the land use changes as an effect of growing suburbanization. The results of the study can be used by public authorities, citizens and governing bodies to form a system of measures to calculate environmental potential and modelling changes which ensure the environmental protection and sustainable development of rural areas.

Сложность инженерно-геологических условий предопределило неоднозначность антропогенных воздействий и различие техногенного морфолитогенеза. Это нашло отражение в степени трансформированности почвенного покрова и экологического состояния. Степень загрязнения его тяжелыми металлами по данным усредненных оценок их содержания находится в пределах допустимых значений. При этом локальные участки достаточно напряжены, где индикатором такого состояния является чувствительность зеленых насаждений. Вусловиях интенсивного антропогенного воздействия оценка по суммарному показателю величин содержания тяжелых металлов не достаточно информативна, так как состояние локальных загрязненных участков нивелируется. Это свидетельствует о необходимости проведения более глубоких исследований почв с учетом ее базовых составляющих. The soils of recreation areas in the central part of Khabarovsk were studied. The complexity of engineering and geological conditions predetermined the ambiguity of anthropogenic impacts and the difference in technogenic morpholithogenesis. This is reflected in the degree of transformation of the soil cover and the ecological state. The degree of its contamination with heavy metals according to the average estimates of their content is within acceptable values. At the same time, local areas are quite tense, where the sensitivity of green spaces is an indicator of this state. In conditions of intensive anthropogenic impact, the assessment of the total value of the heavy metal content is not sufficiently informative, since the state of the local contaminated areas is leveled. This indicates the need for more in-depth studies of the soil, taking into account its basic components

Disturbed soils of the Far North, underlain by permafrost, have extremely low fertility and were formed according to natural and climatic conditions. These soils and the vegetation cover formed on them are very vulnerable to destructive anthropogenic impacts associated with the industrial development of the North. To restore vegetation cover, agrotechnical techniques are used, including the use of various fertilizers. This article will address issues related to changes in the content of potassium in various agricultural techniques at the biological stage of recultivation in the Far North. Agromeliorative techniques increased the accumulation of potassium in the herbage, therefore, perennial grasses consume a large amount of potassium, strengthening their ecological plasticity. It is established that agromeliorative techniques play a crucial role in providing long-term grasses with available potassium. Potassium is consumed by perennial herbs throughout life. This fact should be taken into account when determining the rates of potash fertilization to maintain a stable herbage at the biological stage of reclamation and accelerate the restoration of natural cover.
