Identification of Preferred Healthy Weight Counseling Approaches for Children in the Dental Setting

Objective: There is a gap in the literature regarding optimal methods for the dental team to help address the childhood obesity epidemic; accordingly, this investigation sought to identify preferred communication approaches the dental team can rely upon to initiate dialogue with caregivers regarding the weight of their children. Study Design: A structured interview guide containing seven potential Healthy Weight Counseling (HWC) approaches and eight follow up questions was developed, pilot-tested, revised and utilized as a structured interview guide. Interviews were conducted at the Children's Clinic at the School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) with 50 participants who are English-speaking caregivers of children ages 4–12. Results: Ninety-four percent of the participants were receptive to HWC in the dental setting. Caregivers indicated varying levels of acceptance for the seven HWC-approaches based on specific word choices in each approach. Sixty percent preferred HWC to be delivered with the child not present while 34% preferred the child's presence and 6% had no preference. Conclusions: Caregivers were open to weight-related conversations in the dental setting but to be well received, the dental team must choose their approach carefully and establish the proper doctor/patient relationship prior to HWC delivery. An individualized HWC-approach tailored to the specific needs of each family is indicated.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of e-resources by the Faculty of Law’s academic staff at the University of Namibia’s (UNAM’s) main campus. The study aimed to determine their level of awareness of electronic resources (e-resources) available to them, how useful and effective they found these e-resources, and the challenges they face in accessing them. Design/methodology/approach A convenient sampling technique was used to select a sample of 12 law academics from the population of 17. The study used both qualitative and quantitative research methods using questionnaires and a semi-structured interview guide. Findings Findings revealed that the majority of the law academics were aware of the e-resources subscribed by UNAM’s library, although some were not aware of the newly subscribed international law databases. The findings further revealed that the academics used e-resources for research, publications and teaching purposes, but irregular training, bandwidth problems and limited searching skills hindered their use of e-resources. Practical implications Findings could be used to inform future collection-development decisions, realignment of information-literacy training and promotion and marketing of library services. Originality/value This study has made a significant contribution in the understanding the use of electronic legal resources by law academics at UNAM. The findings and recommendations could also benefit similar academic institutions in developing countries like Namibia.

The purpose of this study was to explore occupational stress among female lecturers in University of Education, Winneba. Two research questions were framed to guide the study. A triangulatory mixed method approach of quantitative and qualitative methods were used in order to obtain a fuller picture on female lecturers’ stress with future recommendations grounded in the research. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyse the quantitative and qualitative data respectively. Seventy-five respondents were selected using purposive sampling method using structured questionnaires and six were interviewed using semi-structured interview guide. The results revealed that the causes of stress among the female lecturers are abundant and wide-ranging extending from heavy workload, pressure from meeting deadlines, overlapping responsibilities, demands from career expectations, to working home at the expense of rest among others. Stress experienced by female lecturers affected their work as well as their home life. The study recommended amongst others that the university should reduce the workload of female lecturers by employing the services of more lecturers or Teaching Assistants and also female lecturers should be supported to manage stress through counselling and assertive training.

This chapter describes a broad anatomy collection development project undertaken by the Health Sciences Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The project included the selection of a wide range of new electronic resources and print materials to fully support the breadth of program needs and learning styles. As a case study, it provides ample opportunity to discuss strategies and best practices for materials selection to support multiple professional schools with similar but distinct curriculum needs. It also allows discussion of an equally critical but occasionally neglected aspect of collection development—marketing the resources to the users and continuing follow-up.

The Work Disability Diagnosis Interview (WoDDI) is a structured interview guide developed by the University of Sherbrooke, Canada to help clinicians detect the most important work-related disability predictors and to identify one or more causes of prolonged absenteeism. This methodological study aims for the cross-cultural adaptation of the WoDDI for the Brazilian context. The method followed international guidelines for studies of this kind, including the following steps: initial translation, synthesis of translations, back translation, evaluation by an expert committee and testing of the penultimate version. These steps allowed obtaining conceptual, semantic, idiomatic, experiential and operational equivalences, in addition to content validity. The results showed that the translated WoDDI is adapted to the Brazilian context and can be used after training.

Purpose Biennially, the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association, publishes a report on the top trends and issues affecting academic libraries in higher education. Harris (2016) used the trends and issues reported by the ACRL to inform a document and thematic analysis of publications written on Jamaican academic librarianship 2010-2016, to investigate the trends and issues in Jamaican academic librarianship. Harris’ (2016) paper however noted that a survey of the chief librarian in each library, regarding their perceptions of the trends and issues would be a useful follow-up to her study, and cited this as a limitation/implication of her paper. The purpose of this paper is to address the above limitation and is therefore the follow-up to Harris’ (2016) paper. Design/methodology/approach The chief librarians in five of the six local university libraries were surveyed to provide insights into the trends and issues in Jamaican academic libraries at the university level. Findings Acquisitions, budget, staffing, communicating value, digital preservation and curation, mobile environment, collaboration, scholarly communication, information technology, space, higher education, user behaviour and expectations and information literacy are the top trends and issues in Jamaican academic libraries at the university level. Research limitations/implications This survey seeks to complement rather than contest Harris’ (2016) research. Perhaps a useful follow-up to both papers would be biennial updates. Additionally, a survey of the trends and issues in all types of academic libraries throughout the English-speaking Caribbean would be a useful follow-up. Originality/value This paper is of value, as it is the first survey of trends and issues in Jamaican academic librarianship. It enriches the existing document and thematic analytical research on trends and issues in Jamaican academic libraries by adding an empirical component. It also increases the number of publications, on trends and issues in Jamaican academic librarianship, from one to two, and allows voices from the English-speaking Caribbean (Jamaica) to be incorporated into the literature dedicated to trends and issues in academic libraries.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Despite its critical importance in reproductive health, access to abortion care continues to be impeded by laws grounded in religious, political, or other ideologies. We will characterize abortion attitudes among US men who live in areas with restrictive abortion laws using qualitative methods. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We will use a semi-structured interview guide to elicit men’s attitudes about abortion, characterized within moral, legal, religious, political, and other domains. Inclusion criteria include English-speaking cisgender men, ages 18 to 65 who live in states with the most restrictive abortion laws as defined by the Guttmacher Institute. We will recruit participants through Facebook ads and interviews will continue until theoretic sufficiency. Using an inductive thematic analysis approach, transcripts will be coded for emergent themes by two researchers independently in QRS NVivo 12.0, with concurrent refinement of themes as interviews are completed. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We will elucidate emergent themes regarding men’s abortion attitudes which could include how men think of abortion as a medical, moral, or personal reality, why they do or do not support abortion provision, among many other possibilities. We anticipate that researchers can use the data obtained from this study to begin to build a conceptual framework of abortion attitudes among US men who lives in restrictive states. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: This study will fill an important gap in the literature by qualitatively characterizing abortion attitudes among a population that has political influence on abortion access. Results can inform policy and advocacy campaigns aimed at shifting public abortion attitudes towards increased acceptance.

339 Background: Pancreatic carcinoma is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in North America. Following surgical resection, most patients will develop recurrence within two years. Intense follow-up is often recommended; however, the impact on survival is unknown. We sought to qualitatively assess patient and clinician attitudes towards follow-up and the perceived benefits and challenges. Methods: The research team developed a semi-structured interview guide. Purposive sampling identified patients who had undergone curative attempt resection and were in active surveillance or had developed recurrence. Clinicians involved in patient care were also interviewed.Themes were derived using standard qualitative methods. Results: Fifteen patients and seven clinicians were interviewed. Patient themes included (1) Limited understanding of disease prognosis; (2) Desire for reassurance through follow-up; (3) Desire to know if and when recurrence occurred; (4) Challenging treatments; (5) Minimal difficulties with the follow-up protocol; and (6) Limited role of family doctors in pancreatic cancer follow-up. Clinician themes included (1) Expectation that patients are aware of recurrence risk; (2) Desire to provide reassurance to patients; (3) Support for intense follow-up protocol despite lack of supporting evidence; (4) Secondary goals for surveillance; (5) Perceived patient challenges in follow-up; (6) Openness to family doctors doing follow-up. Overall, the dominant theme was one of disconnect between patients and clinicians in the understanding of the disease and its prognosis. Conclusions: Patients with pancreatic or periampullary cancer have an intense need for reassurance and obtain this through the follow-up process. Consequently they express few difficulties with follow-up despite the intensity of testing. Oncologists recognize this desire for reassurance and provide it through follow-up despite the lack of evidence to show benefit. There appears to be a disconnect between patients and clinicians in the understanding of the disease and its prognosis suggesting further work is needed to improve patient-physician communication.

Introduction: Final year emergency medicine residents may be transitioning to practice with little to no training on how to effectively supervise and assess trainees. It remains unclear how comfortable final year residents and new-to-practice physicians are with these competencies. The goal of our study was to examine physician comfort with supervision and assessment, whether there was a perceived need for formal training in these areas, and what gaps, barriers and enablers would exist in implementing it. Methods: Qualitative data were collected in two phases during September 2016-November 2017 through interviews of PGY5 emergency residents and new-to-practice staff at the University of Toronto and McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. A semi-structured interview guide was developed and used during the first round of interviews at the University of Toronto during phase one. Results from phase one were used to refine the interview guide, to be used in phase two, to ensure that all potential areas of thematic generation were touched upon. Phase two occurred at the University of Toronto and McMaster University using the refined interview guide. All transcripts were coded, analyzed, and collapsed into themes. Data analysis was guided by a constructivist grounded theory based in a relativist paradigm. Results: Thematic analysis revealed five themes. Residents and staff alike described acquiring the skills of supervision and assessment passively, primarily through modeling the behaviours of others; the training that is available in these areas is variably used, creating a diversity of physician comfort levels within these two competencies; the many competing priorities in the emergency department represent significant barriers to improving supervision and assessment; providing negative feedback is universally difficult and often avoided, sometimes resulting in struggling trainees not being identified until late in residency; the move towards competency based education (CBE) will act as an impetus for more formal curriculum being required in these areas. Conclusion: As residency programs transition to a CBE model, there will be a greater need for formal training in supervision and assessment to achieve a standard level of comfort and competence among senior residents physicians in independent practice. These competencies will also need an emphasis on how to identify struggling trainees, and how to approach negative and constructive feedback.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-advocacy practice for inclusion of blind students in the University of Gondar. A case study design with qualitative inquiry approach was used. In-depth interview guide which was developed out of comprehensive review of literature was used as data gathering instrument. The in-depth interview instrument on its content and construct validity was checked by one blind special needs education professional who works as an instructor in the Department of Special Needs and Inclusive Education in the University of Gondar. There were only five blind students in the university; three were taken as the rest two were unwilling. The data collected through semi-structured interview guide was analyzed thematically in four dimensions of self-advocacy: knowledge of self, knowledge of rights, communication and leadership. Additionally, there was a theme that investigates how the blind students were self-advocating in fighting back their challenges. Results indicate that the blind students were not found to be self-advocates for their inclusion. Except in knowledge of self to some extent, they were found to have limitations in their knowledge of rights, communication and leadership. Recommendations such as improving knowledge of rights, communications and leadership have been forwarded.
