Patient 37 years old. 3 months ago I was healthy from the side of the genitals; appeared to the author with a tumor, equally elastic, oval in shape, mild, 2 fingers not reaching the navel; to the right of the tumor is an unenlarged uterus. The swelling of the breast, producing colostrum, the color of the areola and the mucous membrane of the entrance to the vagina, corresponded to the usual signs of pregnancy.

A pathological autopsy was performed on 6 corpses of piglets in the first week of life who died from mycoplasmosis. Examination of the visible mucous membranes revealed hyperemia of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and thymus. Simultaneous lesions of the pharyngeal, parotid, cervical, mandibular lymph nodes were noted. They were slightly enlarged, from dark pink to dark red. The heart is irregularly shaped due to the expansion of the right ventricle or the diffuse expansion of all departments. Lungs have doughy consistency, uneven color. In some cases, there are diffuse red areas covering the entire lobe of the lungs, in other cases, there is a defeat of small areas. The liver has a smooth surface, soft or pasty consistency, the parenchyma pattern is slightly smoothed in section. The color of the liver is different: dark red areas, without clear boundaries turn into creamy-clay. Flatulence was a characteristic feature of the stomach and intestines. Catarrhal enteritis was registered in animals, which manifested itself in the form of moderate hyperemia of the intestinal mucosa and serous membranes. Microscopically, there is a significant blood supply to the vessels in the lungs. Alveoli are half fall down, in the form of slit-like lumens. In areas of tissue infiltration by inflammatory infiltrate, the alveolar wall is thickened, alveocytes are in a state of turbid swelling and vacuolar dystrophy, they are impregnated with erythrocytes. Peribronchial pneumonia of lymphocytic character is observed. The liver is in a state of acute venous hyperemia. The central and intraparticle capillaries are sharply dilated and filled with blood in some lobes, and the hepatic beams are compressed accordingly. In the center of other lobes, diffuse infiltration of liver tissue by erythrocytes as a consequence of diapedesis is noted. Hepatocytes are in a state of granular dystrophy. Destructive changes are strongly expressed in the mucous membrane of the small intestine: desquamation of the epithelium, necrosis of epitheliocytes and villi, destruction of crypts. In the brain tissue, there is dilation of the lumens of large and small blood vessels, extracellular and perivascular edema, areas of reactive necrosis.

The life of Dr. Juan Byron fills of pride the history of medicine of our nation. Peruvian by birth, he lived in Lima during the second half of the IXI century. Survivor of the war against Chile where his knowledge saved many lives, he was the founder of the medical society “Union Fernandina” and of its journal “Crónica Médica”. Journalist, author of dramas, meteorologist, poliglot, bacteriologist and epidemiologist, researcher and teacher of great prestige in the United States of America and a martyr of medicine. None the less this has not been enough spread. Being close to the centennial of his dead (8th May 1,995), I believe it is the right time to make known the most important aspects of his life.

A 26-year-old Caucasian man with no previous history of chemical injury presenting with an inability to open his right eye was investigated for mucous membrane pemphigoid and treated. Examination was notable for symblepharon of the right eye and impetigo-like lesions on the face and neck. A biopsy with immunohistochemical analysis was significant for linear deposits of C3 and immunoglobulin G at the level of the epithelial basement membrane, confirming the diagnosis of mucous membrane pemphigoid. Although mucous membrane pemphigoid classically presents bilaterally in women in the sixth and seventh decades of life, our patient was a young man with unilateral cicatrising conjunctivitis who may have been easily misdiagnosed without a high index of suspicion. A biopsy is required in cases of cicatrising conjunctivitis so that even atypical cases such as the one presented herein can be appropriately managed.

It is believed that serum pepsinogen levels could be useful for diagnosis of abomasal changes in cattle. Diagnosis of abomasal displacement (AD) is made via invasive and non-invasive techniques. None of the extant methods is a reliable indication of mucosal change. The applicability of serum pepsinogen levels for the diagnosis of changes in the mucous membrane of the abomasum in experimentally induced left and right AD in sheep was investigated in fourteen rams. Abomasal fluid samples were taken and the pH was recorded. Twelve sheep underwent induced left and right AD (six for each group). Two sheep underwent exploratory laparatomy alone to assess the effect of surgical stress on the abomasum. Blood samples were taken before surgery, at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th days after surgery and at the time of necropsy and serum pepsinogen levels were measured. After two weeks the animals were slaughtered and abomasal fluid pH and types of abomasal ulcers were recorded. Significant changes in pepsinogen levels in the left displaced abomasums (LDA) group were seen on days 11 and 14 after surgery (P < 0.05). Significant changes in pepsinogen levels in the right displaced abomasum (RDA) group were seen on Days 9, 11 and 14 after surgery (P < 0.05). There was no association among the types of ulcers and the serum pepsinogen levels in AD cases. The pH increased significantly (P < 0.05) after induced AD in both groups. There were no significant changes in serum pepsinogen levels on different days after surgery among ulcerated and non ulcerated cases in both LDA and RDA groups (P < 0.05). Serum pepsinogen levels were significantly higher in AD groups. There was no association between the types of ulcers and serum pepsinogen levels in AD cases. It seems that the increase in concentration of serum pepsinogen is a good reflection of the damage to the abomasal mucousa due to AD, as was shown by the earlier increase in levels in the course of displacement in the RDA group.

A method for determining the phase of the oestrous cycle by measuring the electrical impedance of the vaginal mucous membrane was examined in the guinea-pig. The apparatus consisted of silver ring electrodes attached to a plastic rod and connected to a transistor indicator. A cyclic increase in impedance was found, and significantly higher values were recorded during the phase of increase (proestrus) than at other times of the cycle. By determining this peak the right time for pairing can be chosen. Conversely, the disappearance of this cyclic culmination in impedance pointed to early pregnancy with a high degree of reliability.

A rare case of lymphoepithelial cyst formed in the piriform sinus of the hypopharynx is reported. Histopathological examination revealed a lymphoepithelial cyst. It was removed by laryngomicrosurgical technique using a side-opened direct laryngoscope. Because this cyst was wide-based on the antero-medial region in the right piriform sinus of the hypopharynx, the mucous membrane around the cyst was incised electrosurgically and then detached to facilitate removal. In this paper, we describe our surgical procedure for removing the cyst in this case and discuss the possible causes of the disease.

Broad ligament ectopic pregnancy is a rare and serious form of extrauterine pregnancy with a high risk of maternal mortality. There are no specific clinical features. Ultrasonography may help in diagnosis but definitive diagnosis is made only during surgery. A 20-year-old woman with previous 2 abortions presented with acute abdomen. She had no history of amenorrhoea but there was history of two episodes of bleeding in the last month at an interval of 14 days, each episode lasting for two-three days. The last episode of bleeding was 10 days back. Her urine pregnancy test was done and it was positive. There was marked abdominal tenderness with guarding and rigidity. Per vaginal examination revealed marked tenderness in the right fornix and cervical motion tenderness, uterus size could not be assessed due to tenderness. It was diagnosed as a case of ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Since she was haemodynamically unstable, emergency laparotomy was done. She had a right sided broad ligament ectopic pregnancy which had ruptured. The tissue was completely removed and haemostatic sutures were taken. High index of clinical suspicion, early diagnosis and prompt surgery is the key to management.

The paper contains an anatomical description of the female organs and placenta of the racoon. The specimen examined contained but a single fœtus, which was lodged in the right horn of the uterus. The uterine mucous membrane of the unimpregnated horn was richly supplied with glands, which presented the usual structure.
