This chapter provides a sense of what artificial intelligence is, its benefits, and integration to higher education. Seeing through the lens of the literature, this chapter will also explore the emergence of artificial intelligence and its attendant use for learning and teaching in higher education institutions. It begins with an overview of artificial intelligence and proceeds to discuss practical applications of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence on the manner in which students learn as well as how higher education institutions teach and develop. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the challenges of artificial intelligence on higher education.

The way people travel, organise their time, and acquire information has changed due to information technologies. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are mechanisms that evolved from data management and developing processes. Incorporating these mechanisms into business is a trend many different industries, including education, have identified as game-changers. As a result, education platforms and applications are more closely aligned with learners’ needs and knowledge, making the educational process more efficient. Therefore, AI and ML have great potential in e-learning and higher education institutions (HEI). Thus, the article aims to determine its potential and use areas in higher education based on secondary research and document analysis (literature review), content analysis, and primary research (survey). As referent points for this research, multiple academic, scientific, and commercial sources were used to obtain a broader picture of the research subject. Furthermore, the survey was implemented among students in the Republic of Serbia, with 103 respondents to generate data and information on how much knowledge of AI and ML is held by the student population, mainly to understand both opportunities and challenges involved in AI and ML in HEI. The study addresses critical issues, like common knowledge and stance of research bases regarding AI and ML in HEI; best practices regarding usage of AI and ML in HEI; students’ knowledge of AI and ML; and students’ attitudes regarding AI and ML opportunities and challenges in HEI. In statistical considerations, aiming to evaluate if the indicators were considered reflexive and, in this case, belong to the same theoretical dimension, the Correlation Matrix was presented, followed by the Composite Reliability. Finally, the results were evaluated by regression analysis. The results indicated that AI and ML are essential technologies that enhance learning, primarily through students’ skills, collaborative learning in HEI, and an accessible research environment.

Higher education in the Republic of Serbia needs to be reformed. This paper presents a performance analysis of the changes that the authors assume are mandatory, presenting the research problem this article addresses. Cabinet research, performed by analyzing the theoretical building blocks of available knowledge and experience, is underway. Articles and studies from various publications, such as academic journals and institutes, were used as sources. In addition, academic articles and papers and studies about artificial intelligence, machine learning, and extended reality were also consulted. The authors consider that these technologies could be of great assistance in developing a new higher education strategy. Further, this research is exploratory given that information from the 100 Serbian students from selected higher education institutions was used to better understand if these technologies are welcomed by students. Based on SmartPls software, the research analysis proved that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are appropriate technologies implemented in higher education institutions (HEI) to develop skills among students, a collaborative learning environment, and an accessible research environment. Additionally, extended reality (XR) facilitates increased motivation, engagement, and learning-by-doing activities between students, offering a realistic environment for learning.

Higher education institutions have access to higher volumes and a greater variety and granularity of student data, often in real-time, than ever before. As such, the collection, analysis and use of student data are increasingly crucial in operational and strategic planning, and in delivering appropriate and effective learning experiences to students. Student data – not only in what data is (not) collected, but also how the data is framed and used – has material and discursive effects, both permanent and fleeting. We have to critically engage claims that artificial intelligence and the ever expansive/expanding systems of algorithmic decision-making provide speedy, accessible, revealing, panoramic, prophetic and smart analyses of students' risks, potential and learning needs. We need to pry open the black boxes higher education institutions (and increasingly venture capital and learning management system providers) use to admit, steer, predict and prescribe students’ learning journeys.

The factors that define and influence the success of industry–academic research in artificial intelligence have evolved significantly in the last decade. In this article, we consider what success means from both sides of a collaboration and offer our perspectives on how to approach the opportunities and challenges that come with achieving success. These perspectives are grounded on the recent and significant investments that have been made between IBM and several higher education institutions around the world, including IBM’s Artificial Intelligence Horizons Network, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology–IBM Watson Artificial Intelligence Lab, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Quest for Intelligence.

The article is devoted to the study of the influence of artificial intelligence on modern education, analysis of the prospects of artificial intelligence application in higher education institutions and problems arising as a result. The authors note that the future of higher education is inextricably linked to the development of information technologies and intellectual machines. The prospects of artificial intelligence open up new opportunities in teaching and learning in higher education institutions with powerful potential to change even the management system of educational institutions itself. The authors study the history of artificial intelligence since the 14th century, when Raimund Lullius proposed the idea of implementing reasoning and thought processes in an intellectual machine. The article uses methods of complex theoretical and descriptive analysis. The scientific novelty of the work is that the authors of the article have found that the effectiveness of use of artificial intelligence in education can be represented by the following functions: automation, integration, acclimation, distinction, identification. The authors argue that the increasing use of artificial intelligence in universities and schools also puts ethical questions at the forefront. Now organisations must consider what type of data is collected, how that information is used and what controls are in place to protect the privacy of students and schoolchildren. Practical significance of the work: in addition to functions reflecting the effectiveness of the use of artificial intelligence in the educational process, the authors have determined the positive aspects of the introduction of artificial intelligence in education. The results of the study: the authors of the article conclude that at present universities need to rethink their function and pedagogical models of education in relation to artificial intelligence, as higher education institutions open up extensive opportunities due to the application of artificial intelligence in the educational process.

The study and solution of the problem of informatization of higher education, which is that as a result, global rationalization of intellectual activity in education through the use of artificial intelligence should be achieved in order to increase the efficiency and quality of training specialists to the level of information culture. Ability to use artificial intelligence systems in the learning process allows you to have an idea of the object of knowledge, and helps to master all the diversity and complexity of relationships characteristic of real processes, trace the dynamics of these relationships when changing external and internal factors. The article analyzes the use of information technologies as a factor for improving the quality of training of future specialists in higher education institutions and the actual problems of professional training of specialists and ways of their solution. The types of innovative teaching methods in higher educational institutions are investigated and the role of information and social technologies in education is considered. The peculiarities of the programmed educational facilities are revealed and the directions of use of information technologies in the educational environment are substantiated. The stated goal set the task: to analyze the possibilities of modern information educational technologies and to investigate the development of the concept of pedagogical innovation as an innovation in the field of pedagogy; to determine the possibilities of using artificial intelligence systems in order to implement a differentiated approach to students with different levels of training; to identify promising directions in the field of application of information technologies in the process of training future specialists in higher education institutions.
