Legitimization of Gender-Based Violence Through Media

Violence is a problematic phenomenon that has a global impact on both individuals and societies. From the reporting aspect of the news to the composition of television programs, violence has taken over the media. Considering the forms of violence in both social media and mainstream media, the use of language is observed to resemble a favor to the ones who commit these acts of violence, not the ones who are subject to it. Accessibility of the events occurring at any given moment within or outside of the border of individuals and the changing realities is a necessity. All these changes in our daily lives cause paradigm shifts, change the way we live, act, or understand for better or for worse as we are exposed. Media and the news, the prominent mediums of this exposure to life, manifest our current way of thinking and also play a significant role in creating the mindset that is determined to have been socially down the line. In this study, femicide cases that have drawn attention, under the spotlight of mainstream media and social media journalism from 2009 to 2020, providing a platform for individuals to report real-life events amateurly, and adopted the use of language by mainstream media and social media journalists, will be analyzed using content analysis method. Moreover, changes in the use of language adopted by mainstream media and the effects of these uses in the scope of the way we live, act, or understand will be argued.

Awareness of gender-based violence (GBV) is growing worldwide with increased coverage in the media (news, cinema, social media, television, etc.). Accounts of GBV therefore reach us in different ways, for instance, the story of a survivor comes to us in a film, novel, autobiography, or documentary. The primary aim of this chapter is to encourage research on the translation of GBV documentaries. It is a call for research that actively listens to the way voices of women who have suffered abuse are translated into other languages, in subtitled and voice-over versions. This chapter provides background information on GBV and explains why it is important to research this area. In the first part, GBV is defined and the reasons behind choosing documentaries for research are presented. The second part offers a reflection on the translation of trauma with a focus on the ethical role of translation and translators. Then, the general translation situation of the documentary genre is introduced, and the reasons why it is essential to investigate how the voices of survivors are translated in this context are presented further.

Growth of technology give big impact to development and changes in mass media. Today, even though broadcast media like radio and television still have place in the heart of audience, however should be recognized that the existence of social media, it must be recognized that the existence of social media has a significant impact on media development. Mainstream media, especially television broadcast media, are starting to look for ways not to be abandoned by their audience. They began put in social media content into television programs. That happened on all shows in television programs. No exception in the news program on TVOne. Therefore, it is interesting to study how the transfer of social media content to television news programs is a way for TVOne to survive in the midst of the onslaught of social media. This research focuses on news programs on TVOne that take social media content into the show. We will use descriptive qualitative research using the case study method and use the political economy theory of the media.

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the ways socio-economic issues are represented in mainstream news media and how it is consumed, understood and interpreted by Israeli young adults (YAs). It examines how mainstream media uses neo-liberal discourse, and the ways YAs internalize this ethic, while simultaneously finding ways to overcome its limitations. Design/methodology/approach This was a mixed methods study. First, it undertook content analysis of the most popular Israeli mainstream news media among YAs: the online news site Ynet and the TV Channel 2 news. Second, the authors undertook semi-structured in-depth interviews with 29 Israeli YAs. The analysis is based on an online survey of 600 young Israelis, aged 18–35 years. Findings Most YAs did not perceive mainstream media as enabling a reliable understanding of the issues important to them. The content analysis revealed that self-representation of YAs is rare, and that their issues were explained, and even resolved, by older adults. Furthermore, most of YAs' problems in mainstream news media were presented using a neo-liberal perspective. Finally, from the interviews, the authors learned that YAs did not find information that could help them deal with their most pressing economic and social issue, in the content offered by mainstream media. For most of them, social media overcomes these shortcomings. Originality/value Contrary to research that has explored YAs’ consumerism of new media outlets, this article explores how YAs in Israel are constructed in the media, as well as the way in which YAs understand mainstream and new social media coverage of the issues most important to them. Using media content analysis and interviews, the authors found that Young Adults tend to be ambivalent toward media coverage. They understand the lack of media information: most of them know that they do not learn enough from the media. This acknowledgment accompanies their tendency to internalize the neo-liberal logic and conservative Israeli national culture, in which class and economic redistribution are largely overlooked. Mainstream news media uses neo-liberal discourse, and young adults internalize this logic, while simultaneously finding ways to overcome the limitations this discourse offers. They do so by turning to social media, mainly Facebook. Consequently, their behavior maintains the logic of the market, while also developing new social relations, enabled by social media.

In a short few years, social media has become the dominant way in which we communicate with the outside world. It has become prevalent in almost every aspect of our daily lives, but one of the most significant changes social media has had, has been on the way we watch television. This phenomenon, known as dual screening, has caused some concern amongst marketers and advertisers, who believed that this behaviour was having an overall negative impact on consumer engagement with television. This chapter attempts to address some of these concerns by providing evidence obtained from the neurosciences and from a case study. The evidence we present in this chapter demonstrates the opposite effect, whereby social media can actually be used to enhance viewer engagement.

Chapter 7 discusses the changing nature of communication as it becomes more nonlinear and multivocal. Social media has changed the way that all organizations are able to engage with their various stakeholders, and nonprofits are no different. The chapter also discusses how this new paradigm shifts control away from the organization and its various “customers” and why this is important to nonprofits. This chapter examines ways that the organization communicates with stakeholders and introduces the concepts of paid, owned, and earned (POE) media and how organizations can leverage each of these media types for a comprehensive marketing communications strategy. Additionally, this chapter discusses partner-level communications programs, such as cause-related marketing and cause branding, and includes considerations from the nonprofit perspective. Last, given the ubiquity of social media, the chapter includes a discussion of celebrity associations and how nonprofits can capitalize on these relationships.

Abstract Social media has arguably shifted political agenda-setting power away from mainstream media onto politicians. Current U.S. President Trump’s reliance on Twitter is unprecedented, but the underlying implications for agenda setting are poorly understood. Using the president as a case study, we present evidence suggesting that President Trump’s use of Twitter diverts crucial media (The New York Times and ABC News) from topics that are potentially harmful to him. We find that increased media coverage of the Mueller investigation is immediately followed by Trump tweeting increasingly about unrelated issues. This increased activity, in turn, is followed by a reduction in coverage of the Mueller investigation—a finding that is consistent with the hypothesis that President Trump’s tweets may also successfully divert the media from topics that he considers threatening. The pattern is absent in placebo analyses involving Brexit coverage and several other topics that do not present a political risk to the president. Our results are robust to the inclusion of numerous control variables and examination of several alternative explanations, although the generality of the successful diversion must be established by further investigation.

This introduction discusses the context and contours of some of the recent and emerging debates on gender based violence (GBV) in university communities. It begins by defining GBV as ‘behaviour or attitudes underpinned by inequitable power relations that hurt, threaten or undermine people because of their (perceived) gender or sexuality’. GBV encompasses a continuum of behaviours and attitudes such as domestic violence, sexual violence, and expressions on social media which normalise sexism and sexual objectification. This introduction explains the nature of the problem associated with GBV, how to understand and respond to the possibilities and challenges that it presents, and how gender as a lens is increasingly becoming obscured when considering the causes and consequences of GBV. It also argues that we need to rethink the punitive responses, service provision and prevention education used to address GBV in universities. Finally, it provides an overview of the chapters that follow.
