In a short few years, social media has become the dominant way in which we communicate with the outside world. It has become prevalent in almost every aspect of our daily lives, but one of the most significant changes social media has had, has been on the way we watch television. This phenomenon, known as dual screening, has caused some concern amongst marketers and advertisers, who believed that this behaviour was having an overall negative impact on consumer engagement with television. This chapter attempts to address some of these concerns by providing evidence obtained from the neurosciences and from a case study. The evidence we present in this chapter demonstrates the opposite effect, whereby social media can actually be used to enhance viewer engagement.

Contrary to the idea which has been widespread for at least a hundred years that women differ substantially from men when they express themselves in English-speaking contexts (e.g., Jespersen, 1922 ; and Steadman, 1935 ), empirical studies have shown that these differences are often minimal and are not due to gender alone (e.g., Eckert, 2008 ; and Baker, 2014 ). This also frequently applies to the way they swear, despite certain preferences which have been documented in empirical studies. With the growing impact that social media now has in our everyday lives, these represent a unique opportunity to study vast quantities of written data. This paper is based on a corpus of about one-million tweets and is an attempt to delve deeper into the analysis of gendered swearword habits. First, the goal is to show that even if there are certain gendered preferences in terms of the choice of swearwords, women and men frequently display similar patterns in using them, thus reinforcing the idea that they are not so linguistically different. Secondly, this paper provides insights into how collocational networks can be used to achieve this, and thus how focussing on differences can be one way to spot similarities across two sub-corpora.

The issue of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election has been widely debated by scholars and journalists. However, these works have not fully analyzed the ads that have been released by Facebook and the U.S. Congress. This project uses a case study to analyze the ads posted by the Russian-affiliated Internet Research Agency, considering the quantities of ads targeted to particular geographic locations, the frequency of targeting for unique keywords, and the reach and impressions of each of the ads. Further, these results are compared to results from best practices in traditional social media campaigns as a way to better understand the goals and potential impacts of the IRA ads. In conclusion, the project, by analyzing the full set of IRA ads, sheds new light on the way false information narratives were leveraged by the Russian-linked IRA.

Nowadays, social media and social networks are increasingly used in business as they have drastically changed the way the community works, communicates, collaborates, socialises, creates content and shares knowledge and ideas. However, in particular, IT professionals and practitioners need to be aware of online security and privacy issues and the potential negative impact that they may cause on different aspects of business, such as online breaches or information theft. The use of social media inevitably leads to disclosure of personal information, with the use of open-source intelligence (OSINT) and other similar techniques. Hence, the aim of this article is twofold, namely first to show results of a survey towards future Greek IT practitioners regarding awareness and viewpoints of social media users concerning security and privacy on social media. More specifically the study was based on responses and viewpoints of 178 Greek electrical engineering and IT students to an online questionnaire. Secondly, the aim is also to show how easily a potential malicious user can anonymously track and retrieve sensitive personal information in an automated and undetectable way from popular social media platforms by using publicly available information, resources, and tools. The results of the survey show that most of the respondents are aware of the privacy settings of the social media platforms they use. However, they consider that they should be more careful concerning personal data and whom they add as friends or followers and they do not feel comfortable with the fact that a stranger might be able to access their personal information through their publications on social media platforms.The case study indicates that it is possible for malicious users to acquire sensitive personal data (e.g. user's location via tweets and instas from smartphones). In addition, the ability to map activity could allow malicious users to track the activities of unsuspected users and predict their future locations.

AbstractThe coming of the mobile phone camera has transformed photography. This article explores this transformation through a case study of photography in Eastleigh, a Nairobi estate that is home to many thousand Somalis, both Kenyan Somalis and refugees from Somalia. It is a trade hub for East Africa, a social and economic hub for the global Somali diaspora, and a place regarded as suspect in a country where Somalis have long been marginalized. This article examines Eastleigh as photographic subject and setting, comparing the ubiquity of mobile phone photography there with seldom-practised more traditional forms of photography that are often treated with suspicion in an estate subject to securitized government policy and negative press. It shows how mobile phone photography helps people in the estate communicate visually with the wider Somali diaspora through social media, and how it helps people sell their goods, using as a case study a particular archive of images sent through WhatsApp to the author by Mohaa, a friend of his and a trader in the estate. The article also adds a political dimension to recent anthropological theorizing on mobile photography, showing how, in Eastleigh, Somalis have used photography and social media to take control of the way in which the estate is represented visually, and to demand from the state better services and better treatment.

Violence is a problematic phenomenon that has a global impact on both individuals and societies. From the reporting aspect of the news to the composition of television programs, violence has taken over the media. Considering the forms of violence in both social media and mainstream media, the use of language is observed to resemble a favor to the ones who commit these acts of violence, not the ones who are subject to it. Accessibility of the events occurring at any given moment within or outside of the border of individuals and the changing realities is a necessity. All these changes in our daily lives cause paradigm shifts, change the way we live, act, or understand for better or for worse as we are exposed. Media and the news, the prominent mediums of this exposure to life, manifest our current way of thinking and also play a significant role in creating the mindset that is determined to have been socially down the line. In this study, femicide cases that have drawn attention, under the spotlight of mainstream media and social media journalism from 2009 to 2020, providing a platform for individuals to report real-life events amateurly, and adopted the use of language by mainstream media and social media journalists, will be analyzed using content analysis method. Moreover, changes in the use of language adopted by mainstream media and the effects of these uses in the scope of the way we live, act, or understand will be argued.

Bigger than work, friends, and school combined.” Aziz Ansari, (2015).Romantic relationships have drastically changed in today’s world, affected by the role of social media and deeply changing the way we interact with each other. The way we approach one another might seems standard today, but importantly differs from what people did even just decades ago. The percentage of people meeting online keeps rising while traditional ways of finding your partner are constantly decreasing.Online dating transformed our romantic lives; single people today have more romantic options than ever. The new trend of online romantic relationships leads to various questionings. Why do people decide to use social media to interact with each other rather than approaching someone in the street and invite him/her for diner? The issue of online self-presentation, the necessity of body language, and how does this change affect us in finding our life partner? It is this change we want to focus on, to try and find out how the rise of online dating drastically affected the art of finding a companion. The aim is to intent to understand the different intentions behind social media when concerning romantic relationships. We can ask ourselves for instance, do people search today for long term connection when chatting on the net or maybe more alternative motives.Of course, the rise of social media implies some new challenges and risks that are necessary to mention, we will mainly focus on how social media negatively affects the beginning of romantic relationships.Throughout the paper we will first focus on 5 focus points based on related work to the topic, in order to organize the information. The aim is to understand the connection between romantic relationships and social media, how do we present ourselves online, media richness, the Initiation of social ties on social media and finally analyzes the initiation of romantic ties on social media. We will discuss prior research and go further into our research questioning focusing on the negative impact of this new kind of romantic relationship by conducting a survey and analyze how people perceive the role of social media in their own romantic life. People have become so used to using social media that a more traditional way of dating is less and less considerable nowadays. Using social media to approach someone has become the new norm, and maybe the reason why we should be more alert and consider the negatives impacts it has on the initiation of romantic relationships.

Social media increasingly shapes the way in which we perceive conflicts and conflict parties abroad. Conflict parties, therefore, have started using social media strategically to influence public opinion abroad. This book explores the phenomenon by examining, (1) which strategies of external communication conflict parties use during asymmetric conflicts and (2) what shapes the selection of these communication strategies. In a comprehensive case study of the conflict in Israel and Palestine, Bernd Hirschberger shows that the selection of strategies of external communication is shaped by the (asymmetric) conflict structure.

<p>The evolution of technology has made communication much easier. The existence of recent sophisticated platforms, operating systems, and apps has changed the way people communicate. This is supported by McLuhan’s statement about the determinism theory of technology which in his 1962 book ‘<em>The Guttenberg Galaxy: The Making of Thypographic Man’ </em>declared<em> </em>that technology affects the way people communicate<em> </em> (Straubhaar, Larose, &amp; Davenport, 2010). In this modern era, the evolution of technology has brought the communication amongs celebrities, fans, and haters to the next level. Through social media programs such as Instagram, a celebrity just need post a picture or a video to give an update about their activities for the followers. However, their followers are not just their lovers or fans but their haters as well. Instagram as a social media platform offers a cyber space which enables cyber societies to interact freely. However, this cyber space also allows haters to exist on social media.</p><p>BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Kemajuan teknologi mempermudah komunikasi antar manusia. Dapat dikatakan dengan semakin canggihnya <em>platform</em>, sistem operasi dan aplikasi yang merupakan bagian dari teknologi mempengaruhi cara komunikasi masyarakat sebagaimana yang dikatakan McLuhan pada teori determinasi teknologi di tahun 1962 tertulis dalam bukunya yang berjudul <em>The Guttenberg Galaxy: The Making of Thypographic Man</em> (Straubhaar, Larose, &amp; Davenport, 2010) yaitu bahwa teknologi mempengaruhi cara berkomunikasi manusia satu dengan lainnya. Pada era modern ini kemajuan teknologi mempermudah komunikasi antar selebriti dan fans melalui media sosial, khususnya Instagram. Dimana melalui Instagram seorang idola atau selebriti cukup memposting sebuah foto atau video di Instagram untuk bertegur sapa dengan para penggemarnya. Namun pada kenyataanya tidak hanya komentar positif yang didapat oleh seorang idola namun juga kritikan pedas dari para haters. Dengan mudahnya akses komunikasi dan Instagram sebagai <em>cyber space</em> yang menjadi ruang berinteraksi antar individu secara bebas pada modern ini melahirkan dampak negatif bagi para selebriti yaitu dengan lahirnya akun-akun <em>haters</em> di media sosial.</p>
