ABSTRACT Introduction: Hepatitis B is a risk factor for Health Care Workers (HCW) and medical students attending wards at hospital. Hepatitis B vaccine has been recommended since 1982 for use by HCWs to prevent HBV infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vaccination coverage among HCWs and medical students, their level of knowledge regarding vaccination as well as and their beliefs regarding Hepatitis B vaccine at a Teaching District Headquarter (DHQ) Hospital of Punjab, Pakistan. Subjects and Methods:  This cross sectional descriptive study based on a questionnaire-based survey was carried out at DHQ Teaching Hospital, Sahiwal, Pakistan from 01-04-2019 to 31-07-2019. Doctors, medical students and paramedical staff involved in active physical care of the patients were included in the study. Results: A total of 300 participants were provided questionnaire including consent, out of which 285 participants responded. There were 127 doctors (44.56%), 86 medical students (30.18%) and 72 paramedics (25.26%). 132 (46.31%) participants were fully vaccinated, 9.12% had received 2 doses of vaccine, 8.77% received only one dose whereas 35.43% were unvaccinated. Out of unvaccinated individuals, 32.35% reasoned lack of time being the main cause followed by other reasons including lack of need, lack of awareness and accessibility. Conclusion: This study showed that vaccination coverage among HCWs was alarmingly low along with lesser knowledge of vaccination and infection. Therefore, HCWs and medical students are at an increased risk of acquiring Hepatitis B infection.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the hepatitis B vaccination coverage among medical students at a public university in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and their compliance with the postvaccination serologic testing recommendations. Of the total of 858 students, 675 (78.7%) participated in the study. Among the participants, 48.9% (95% CI: 45.1% to 52.7%) were vaccinated against hepatitis B (received ≥ 3 doses of the vaccine), 31.6% were not (received 0, 1 or 2 doses), and 19.6% did not know their vaccination status. Hepatitis B vaccination coverage increased from 26.0% among first-year students to 70.6% among sixth-year students while the prevalence of unknown vaccination status decreased from 39.7% among first-year students to 2.4% among sixth-year students. The frequency of unvaccinated students ranged from 23.7% among fifth-year students to 34.4% among first-year students. Only 34.8% of the vaccinated students performed the anti-HBs testing after vaccination. Among these medical students, we found a low adherence to the hepatitis B vaccination and to the postvaccination serologic testing. A comprehensive hepatitis B immunization program should be offered to students at this medical school.

Vaccines are a core component of any preventive strategy designed to ensure the global public health. A major factor influencing the successful implementation of any immunization program is awareness and public acceptance of the vaccine. The present study focuses on potential impacts of awareness created by media campaigns on vaccination coverage of hepatitis B. In this paper, a SIR model with vital dynamics in a population of varying size is investigated, which couples hepatitis B vaccination and awareness created by media within a single framework. It is assumed that media campaigns propagate awareness about measures requisite for escaping the chances of contracting hepatitis B. The awareness created by media motivates people to get vaccinated and attain full immunization against hepatitis B virus. For analyzing the model, stability theory of differential equations is employed. First, equilibria of the system comprising fractions of the population are obtained and their stability behavior is discussed. Then the asymptotic behavior of total population is discussed in detail. Three threshold parameters R0, R1and R2governing the dynamics of infection and total population are also affirmed. The findings of numerical simulations are also in line with analytically obtained results.

AbstractIntroductionMedical students are mainly exposed to needle stick and sharp object injuries in the course of their clinical activities during studying. They are at high risk due to their undeveloped skills, restricted clinical experience, lack of knowledge and risk perception. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of needle stick injuries of the fourth and final year medical students, and to estimate their knowledge about blood-borne pathogens disease transmission and standard precautions.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, in February 2014. The students were invited to self-administer a questionnaire of 26 closed questions prepared for this study.ResultsThe questionnaire was filled in and returned by 637 students. The prevalence of needle sticks and sharp object injuries was 29.5%. Needle stick injuries were the most common type of accidents, more frequent among the fourth compared to the sixth year students (p=0.002). The majority of accidents occurred in patient rooms (53%) and the emergency department (15%). 54% of participants reported an accident to the responsible person. Students without accidents had a significantly better perception of risk (3.79 vs. 3.35; p<0.05). Out of the total participating students, only 16.6% (106/637) received all three doses of Hepatitis B vaccination, while 16.2% were partially vaccinated.ConclusionsThere is a need for additional theoretical and practical education of our students on blood exposure via accidents, raising the awareness of the necessity of hepatitis B vaccination, and introducing the unique/comprehensive procedure for accident reporting for students and healthcare workers in the entire country.

In the present study the frequencies of immunity against hepatitis B (HB) and of potentially contaminating accidents among medical students of a Brazilian public university were evaluated. Of all the 400 students who should have been immunized, 303 (75.7%), 66.3% of whom were women, answered an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. Serum anti-HBs were determined in 205 of them and titers > 10 UI/L were considered to be protective. A total of 86.8% of students had received three doses of HB vaccine. The frequency of immunity among women (96.4%) was higher (p = 0.04) than that among men (87.7%). Among those who did not have immunity, 12/13 (92.3%) had been vaccinated before entering medical school. Only 11% of the students with complete vaccination had previously verified serological response to the vaccine. A total of 23.6% reported having been somehow exposed to blood or secretions. Among final-year students, this frequency was 45.0%, being similar among men (47.8%) and women (43.2%). Of all these accidents, 57.7% were due to body fluids coming in contact with mucosa and 42.3% due to cut and puncture accidents. The results from this study show that: 1) the frequency of immunity against HB is high among the evaluated medical students, although verification of response to vaccination is not a concern for them; 2) anti-HBs titers should be verified after complete vaccination and on a regular basis, especially by men; and 3) the frequency of potentially contaminating accidents is high.

Background: India is in the intermediate hepatitis B virus endemicity zone with hepatitis B surface antigen prevalence among the general population ranging from 2% to 8%.Health care professionals are at a high risk of getting .Hep B infection which can be prevented by strategies like vaccination, increasing awareness and following universal precautions. The present study was conducted on medical students (3rd Semester) to evaluate their knowledge regarding HBV and to know their vaccination status. Also along with data collection, students were educated about hepatitis B vaccine and about universal precautions before they start with their clinical postings. Methods: Cross sectional study was carried out on 3rd semester MBBS students (batch 2012-2013). All the students present on the day of data collection were included in the study and interviewed using pretested questionnaire. Data was analyzed using percentages. Results: Most of the students had good knowledge about disease and modes of transmission & prevention. Surprisingly only 56.6 percent were aware of high risk of transmission to health professional and doctors. Main source of information was media (85.4percent).Nearly 82% of the students were immunized and main reason among those unimmunized was unawareness about vaccine availability. Conclusions: It is recommended that Hepatitis B vaccination should be made available for all unimmunized students who enter medical profession. The orientation and sensitization programm should be held to create awareness regarding HBV infection preferably at the time of admission into medical college ,else no later than start of their clinical posting.
