Background: Self-directed learning (SDL) has been identified as an important skill for medical graduates. To meet the challenges in today's healthcare environment, self-directed learning is most essential. Readiness for SDL is the degree to which an individual possesses attitudes and abilities necessary for SDL. The present study was taken to assess the self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) among 4th semester medical students in a tertiary care teaching hospital. The objectives of the study were to assess the self-directed learning readiness among 4th semester undergraduate medical students of Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam using SDLR instrument; to find out the association if any between readiness for SDL and students’ demographic characteristics.Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 4th semester undergraduate medical students of Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in the month of June 2016 to assess the self-directed learning readiness, using Fishers’40–item self-directed learning readiness scale (SDLRS) which contains 3 domains. The student’s response was collected in a 5‑point Likert scale. The readiness for SDL was categorized as high (>150 scores) and low (<150).Results: The mean SDLRS score was 145.17±18.181 with 105 (64%) students scoring <150 indicating low readiness. The mean sores in the 3 domains of self-management (SM), desire for learning (DL), self-control (SC) were 43.81±7.134, 45.88±6.916, and 55.26±8.296 respectively.Conclusions: Self-directed learning readiness appeared to be low among medical students. This study points out the need to address SDL skills among medical students, and need to find ways to build SDL skills among them.

Background: The medical college library plays an important role in enhancing theacademic achievements of medical students. In order to improve the quality oflibrary services this study provided an assessment of the impact of the libraryservices on undergraduate medical student learning behavior. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive type of study. Thestudy used a self-designed questionnaire. The study sample was 200 undergraduatemedical students. The questionnaire was administered to them at the end of theirlecture class. Results: The primary reason for going to the library was self study (68%) refer text(37%) and group study (36%). Only 38.55% of the respondents visited the library ona daily basis, 50.5% students visit library when necessary and 10.5% student uselibrary 2-3 times a week. All students (100%) are aware about availability of textbooks in the library. 60.5% students know that journals are available in their library,52% know about dictionaries, 56.55% know of having internet, 62.5% students knowthat computers are available in library. 46.5% students said that their internet ofinstitutional library is somewhat helpful. Noise (67.5%), insufficient space (66%),lack of interent access (46%) and lack of computers(44.5%) might have negativeinfluence on the students in library visit. Conclusion :The study suggested that fulfillment of more needs to be done topromote self directed learning. The usage of library, its resources and services needto be increased. Background: Facebook has been acknowledged as an alternative media in supporting traditional learning activities. However, its potential in enhancing students’ cognitive engagement on flipped-classroom’ activities is still not much known. This study aims to measure undergraduate medical students’ cognitive engagement changes after joining an ocular trauma flipped-classroom’ Facebook group.Methods: This pre-experimental study was involving 45 third-year undergraduate medical students of Muhammadiyah Surabaya' University who were joining the ocular trauma flipped-classroom' Facebook group. Three cognitive engagement variables were measured before students were joining the group and after the flipped-classroom’ face to face session ended. Finally, metrics data of the group members’ activities, which had been collected using Facebook Insight, used to shown changes between the active and passive user.Results: All users’ (n = 45) cognitive engagement were rising significantly after join the Facebook group (motivation, p = 0,000; self-directed learning readiness, p = 0,000; knowledge towards ocular trauma topic, p = 0,000). Increase in average active user knowledge was 11.09 points higher than passive users. Self-efficacy aspect of the students’ learning motivation and self-management aspects of the students’ self-directed learning readiness were the most increased sub-components.Conclusion: Facebook group has the potential to improve students’ cognitive engagement on ocular trauma’ flipped classroom.

Background: Antimicrobial-resistant organisms are spreading worldwide, and the pipeline for new antimicrobials remains meager. The next generation of doctors must be better prepared to use antimicrobials more sparingly and appropriately.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate medical students of GMERS Medical College Junagadh from January to May 2017. Self-administered structured close ended questionnaire in English was used. Pearson’s correlation co-efficient, t test and ANOVA were used as tests of significance.Results: Total 130 students participated in the study. Participation of females (48.5%) and males (51.5%) was almost equal. Almost 60% participants had adequate knowledge about antimicrobial resistance. The mean antimicrobial resistance knowledge score of participants was 22.7 (SD: ±5.27, min: 8, max: 37).Conclusions:Important finding of the study was that just one forth of the participants agreed that information they have received so far in medical course regarding antimicrobial resistance is adequate. The budding doctors should receive correct, adequate information regarding antimicrobial resistance.

Objective: To assess the relationship between self-esteem and the academic score of undergraduate medical students of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was performed from June 2018 to June 2019. The study area was Poonch Medical College, Azad Kashmir. The data collection tool was well-verified and widely used Rosenberg self-esteem scale. The study questionnaire was electronically distributed to all Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery students on the Poonch Medical College. The total student was 500 and out of the 253 completed and submitted the questionnaire (response rate of 50.6%). Results: The mean academic score of all students was 66.61 ± 5.42 and the mean RSE score was 28.66 ± 3.98. A statistically significant correlation was not found between age, academic score, and RSE score. Female students had slightly higher academic performance scores and RSE scores compared to the male students, but this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: This study did not reveal any significant relationship between academic score and self-esteem of undergraduate medical students. However, both academic scores and self-esteem can be further improved. Future studies are invited to find out the other factors responsible for better academic performance. Introduction: Self-medication forms an essential part of the self-care. Since medical students are being exposed to the knowledge of diseases and drugs, would assume a special significance to assess the self-medication practice among them. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted from March to April 2018 in 200 preclinical medical students of Nepalgunj Medical College (NGMC), Chisapani. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection and the students who took self-medication within last two months were included. Result: Out of 200 students, 123 (61.5%) were found practicing self-medication. Majority of students (47.97%) were taking Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) for fever (18.70%), headache (17.89%) and abdominal pain (13.01%). 21.14% of students were consuming paracetamol for these health ailments. 44.72% of students reported that they were practicing self-medication because of the mild nature of illness. Conclusion: Students are widely practicing self-medication, particularly NSAIDs group of drugs. In this situation, awareness about the pros and cons of self-medication should be must in the medical students.

Background: Self-directed learning is a type of instructional strategy where students take charge of their learning process. Self-directed learning is learning approach where learners are responsible towards learning which helps students think critically and perform task confidently. The skills that are learned through self-directed learning remain lifelong and helps to provide patient care in effective way and uplifting the nursing profession. This study was conducted to identify the readiness for self-directed learning among nursing students in Chitwan Medical College. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was adopted. Sample size was 107 nursing students from Bachelor in science of nursing and Bachelor in nursing science program. They were selected by using probability, stratified, simple random technique. A standardized tool (Self Directed Learning Readiness Scale) was used to collect data. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Results: More than two-third of the nursing students were ready for self-directed learning. The mean score of self control was higher than the mean score of self-management and mean score of desire. The level of the readiness for self-directed learning was significantly associated with age (p=0.036), ethnicity (0.036) and most prefer resource (p=0.010). Conclusions: Self-directed learning helps for self control towards their learning and enable students move forward towards their career goal. So, the faculties need to focus on the selection resources for learning that help to create desire for learning and promote self-directed learning skills among nursing students.

Background: Self-medication is a widely practiced trend in the general Indian population. Among the medical students, self- medication is popular because of awareness about the disease and their treatment. Analgesics are one of the most common drugs used for self-medication. Very few studies are available in Jharkhand regarding this subject. So, the present study aims to delve into the pattern of self-medication practices of analgesics among the 1st and 3rd semester medical students of RIMS, Ranchi, Jharkhand.Methods: A questionnaire based cross sectional study was done in RIMS, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India in March-April 2019 among the undergraduate medical students. The results were expressed as percentage and frequency.Results: Out of total 150 and 142 students in the 1st and 3rd semester respectively, 140 and 130 students practiced self- medication.  Advice from seniors was the biggest source of information in both the groups followed by internet and books. Paracetamol was the most common drug (75%; 60%) and headache was the most common indication (55%; 68%). Quick relief of symptoms was the most common reason for self-medication in both the groups (44%; 48%).Conclusions: In both the groups, the students continued the drug even after experiencing side effects (77%; 60%). Most students were of the view that such practice is not acceptable at all times (75%; 72%).
