Mobile phone has been studied by researchers in its connection with education-related activies.  This study was aimed at investigating two research questions: 1) what are students’ perception toward mobile phone to support classroom activities; 2) How do students experience mobile phone use to support classoom activities? This study employed qualitative method. To collect data, there were some technique used: questionnaire and observation.  Students participated in this study were 70 students. Findings showed that student had positive perception and attitude toward mobile phone to support classroom activities. In classroom they used mobile phone to support classroom activitis. Reading E-Book that support subject, playing Audio and Video File, operating offline dictionary were activities supported by mobile phone use.

Covid-19 pandemic situation has forced EFL teachers and students to create innovation in online classroom activities. Through a case study at one of private universities in Indonesia, this research aim at exploring the implementation of mobile phone used in learning process in low tech Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). The data were collected from observation, in-depth interview, and document review. The findings reveal that mobile phone has an imperative role in concocting student to be full-fledge community, stimulating the feeling of perception, unexceptional mindfulness and teaching of socio-political and social classification. Further, mobile phone and its supporting materials in students’ tools rely upon whether there is appropriate security to keep the device, stockpiling of internet data package, wellsprings of electric supply, gracefully of each provider signal, availability to flexibility access in various areas, especially mountainous to remote area. Regarding the challenges, the students experienced multi-layer intricacies: (a) learning facilities including absence of speed data transfer capacity, (b) students’ awareness and proficiency in English, and (c) techno pedagogical insight over lecturers. This study implies that enhancement on the student capacity at low tech level of learning through mobile phone provide meaningful learning assistance, particularly in term of efficiency during classroom activities

Mobile phone use has been studied in its connection with foreign language learning by many researchers concerned in Mobile Assisted language learning (MALL) for more than a decade. In Indonesian Islamic higher education context, the issues of MALL  has not been discussed extensively.  To respond to this need, this study was aimed at investigating the following research question:  1) How do students use their mobile phone to learn English Monolingual Dictionary (EMD) application?; 2)How do students use their mobile phone to support English language learning?. This study employed the qualitative method using case study. To collect data, this study applied observation to find out students’ engagement in using the mobile phone for learning EMD application. Students participated in this study were 40 students. Findings showed that students were able to use the mobile phone to use EMD application in English language learning (ELL). They demonstrated skill in operating EMD application which was realized in their knowledge concerning, pronunciation, grammar and meaning information when searching a particular word. In addition, there were many features that students seized from the mobile phone for English language learning. They used audio feature to operate EMD from mobile phone to boost listening skill. Their mobile phone facilitated them to record video project presenting their vocabulary learning. These activities could be done by their mobile phone existence as an introductory effort toward MALL implementation in ELL in Islamic Higher education.

The introduction presents the book’s theoretical framework and research questions drawing from the multidisciplinary field of mobile telephony studies. It introduces the key issues of this scholarly debate from a social science and anthropological point of view. The main focus of the chapter is scholarly discussions of mobile telephony in developing countries, but research on mobile phone use in Western countries is also briefly discussed to enable comparisons. This chapter refers to and analyzes a broad range of studies on mobile telephony, including ethnographies of mobile phone use in various locations, studies on mobile telephony’s economic and developmental impacts, and the mobile phone use of teenagers. This chapter also introduces the anthropology of media and discusses the concept of development.

Covid-19 pandemic has brought many significant aspects of human life, such as health, social, economy, and education as well. Temporarily, most government around the world have closed educational institution in order to reduce the spread of Covid-19. The Indonesian government appeals all elements of education to adapt and continue learning activities through online learning. Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) as the newest learning way in the language education where applications or websites are used to facilitate students learning activities. Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has been studied years by researchers in its connection with education related activities. This research will focus on its main purposes,that is teachers’ perceptions in mobile learning especially English language learning classroom activities. The method of the research was quantitative method which used 70 English teachers as research object. The data were collected through a 5-point Likert Scale questionnaire. The research found; the teachers’ majority had positive perception on the usage of MALL to support classroom activities, especially in learning English language in the middle of Covid-19 pandemic

TOWARD MALL IN LEARNING ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION: POTENTIALS AND PITFALLS In this era of technology, the use of mobile phone, which is wireless, personal, networking, and ubiquitous have influenced every aspect of human life. Using mobile technology in language learning would give opportunity to learn outside the conventional class and decrease English learning problems in EFL setting. By using mobile phone, the learners could access information and develop it across space, be connected to the others and explore their ability more. This study aimed at investigating the use of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in learning English Pronunciation. This study was qualitative approach which employed case study as the method. The study involved 30 students English Education Study Program. The data are gathered from observation, questionnaire, and Focused Group Discussion (FGD). The result shows that the use of MALL has benefited the students in enhance their ability in English Pronunciation through ELSA Speak application. The pitfalls mostly lay in the problems of signal and network in the learning process. Thus, MALL should be integrated in learning English process since it is perceived to be useful to enhance students’ performance in learning English.

This qualitative case study investigated the use of mobile phones as tools to support English language learning in a higher education setting in the Dominican Republic. The study examined how a Dominican English language teacher and her students used mobile phones as educational tools, and which features these participants appropriated to engage in English language learning activities inside and outside the classroom. The study also explored social and physical factors that influenced participants’ mobile phone appropriation in a developing country context with limited technology access and infrastructure. Data collection took place for eight weeks through semi-structured interviews, informal conversations, classroom observations, and questionnaires, in a university English language center located in a Dominican urban city. Findings indicated that the teacher appropriated her mobile phone as a tool for connectivity, content delivery, assessment facilitation, time-management, and emergency power back-up. Students appropriated their mobile phones as tools for research and reference, note-taking, data gathering, collaboration and repository. In addition, mobile phone use for educational purposes facilitated the teacher’s instruction and enabled her to provide authentic activities for her students. Findings from this study shed light on how English Language teachers and students can integrate their own mobile technologies to support English language learning in a university classroom within a developing country context with uneven access to technology. Many Indonesian English Learners nowadays use  the smartphone as their communication tools. It is used only for socializing through social media by most of them. This descriptive research aims to elaborate their perception on the implementation of MALL in English Class for University Level. The data were collected through a survey questionnaire which was adapted from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The result proves that they have a positive perception on the usage of MALL.

In the realm of education, information technology (IT), particularly mobile devices and applications, is becoming increasingly popular. Language learning has become one of the areas of education where mobile technology is being used. In Indonesia, Mobile-Assisted Language Learning has been implemented some areas, while it is acknowledged that some areas have not benefited as much as others. Some have questioned whether MALL might be used in their areas, while others have stated that it is unavoidable. The following are the research questions: 1) what are the advantages and disadvantages of using MALL? 2) How feasible is it to utilize MALL in an Indonesian context? The nature of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data collection methods used was library research. Data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing were the approaches used to analyze the data. This research examines a variety of literature (including peer-reviewed studies) on the benefits and drawbacks of adding MALL into the framework of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. The application of these concepts in an Indonesian setting is then examined. Finally, to stay up with global digital learning, this article advocates that MALL be used for EFL teaching in Indonesia. It also suggests that more research be done for each mobile device and app in various parts of Indonesia, particularly in rural and remote places.
