The vast growths of multinational and national companies to world-class companies in Indonesia result in the advanced demand for English mastery in every working sector including Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). This article aims at investigating the needs and actual use of English in a working environment specifically at OSH. This research adopted mix method which use questionnaire and open-ended interview to obtain the data on the needs of English in OSH field matching to the prerequisite test in recruitment as well as the use of English from fifteen multinational and national companies. The result of the investigation revealed that English certification positioned as a prerequisite test and getting a high priority in job recruitment. When recruiting, companies expect at least an intermediate level for English. Recruits at least have to be able to manage communicative competence for daily conversation and perform a solid knowledge and skills of general OSH vocabulary. Productive skills are more required for communicating to expatriates, leading the meeting, doing a presentation, writing a report and designing Standard Operational Procedure (SOP). This research implies that in spite of position as the foreign language in Indonesia, English has a vital role in the working environment.

The success of human resource management as one of the benchmarks is in terms of employee productivity. The needs of employees in carrying out their work in order to achieve optimal work productivity need to be protected with a safe working environment, comfortable and serene, because it will cause the desire to work well. This research was conducted with the aim to know how the implementation of occupational safety and health program, how the productivity of employees work, and how much influence the implementation of occupational safety and health program on employees work productivity at PT Papyrus Sakti Paper Mill. The data collection tool in this research is by distributing questionnaires to 125 employees of production department. Analytical techniques used in the form of descriptive analysis techniques with quantitative approach. The result of descriptive statistical analysis for both variables shows the safety and health variables with employee productivity are in good category. Based on the results of testing on the implementation of occupational safety and health have a positive and significant effect on work productivity of employees. It can be proven from the calculation t count = 6.359> t table = 1.979 with the percentage of influence of 24.7%.

Abstract There is a growing concern on the implications of climate change on thermal stress, which in turn may affect workspace morale and performance, leading to lower productivity, or even posing a higher risk for employee’s health. In this paper, we study this aspect of climate change providing evidence on future projections of the Humidex Index (HI) for the West Attica Region, an overpopulated and industrialized area of Greece, which holds the World Meteorological Organization record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe. The current study is based on the use of the high resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) regional climate model to determine changes in the trends of extreme heat conditions under future scenarios analysis. Projections of future climate regional analysis for the mid-twenty-first century (2021-2045) indicate an increase in the yearly/daily values of maximum air temperatures (Τmax) and HI index values. In addition, the analysis reveal shorter return periods for the specific design thresholds of Tmax and of the HI index as associated with an increase in the number of events above thresholds for both RCPs 4.5 and 8.5 W/m2 future scenarios. The anticipated (extreme) heat conditions expose the occupational safety and health (OSH) at high risk, and the paper provide suggestions for applied interventions in the direction of a safer working environment.

In American Dental Association v. Martin, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit reviewed a challenge to a rule of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). In December, 1991, OSHA passed a standard to protect health care workers from viruses transmitted by blood—bloodborne pathogens—including the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the human immunodeficiency virus, the virus known to cause AIDS. Three health care organizations, whose members are dentists, medical personnel firms, and home health employers, petitioned the court to review OSHA's rule. The Occupational Safety and Health Act was passed to assure employees that they would have as safe and healthy a working environment as feasible. Congress sought to ensure this by vesting the Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health with the authority to promulgate mandatory safety and health standards. In promulgating standards concerning toxic materials or harmful physical agents, the secretary sets rules that most adequately assure that an employee will not suffer a material impairment of health or functional capacity while performing work-related duties.

If regulation is to be effective, not only must changes take place in the mode of regulation but also the concepts held by many in management ranks. Misconceptions often abound which, it is suggested, stem from a lack of appreciation of accident causation, the part that the management system plays or a tendency to blame the victim. Thus, too much attention continues to be paid to operator error, whereas in reality, it is frequently the organization that has failed. However, when management recognizes the pivotal role of the system, and makes greater use of quality control methods, the way will be open for the inspectorate also to be more innovative. They will then be initially auditors of the management of the occupational health and safety policy. Without that change the enforcers will, of necessity, continue to be searchers for violations and investigators after the event. It is also likely that the health hazards of the working environment will continue to be given inadequate attention. With the introduction of the Occupational Safety and Health Bill into Parliament in 1990, followed by a change of government bringing its new agenda and thus casting an ominous shadow of concern, such factors assume a greater degree of importance.

This study aimed to obtain explanative findings about the effect of (1) working environment on employee’s performance, (2) occupational safety and health on employee’s performance, (3) working environment on employee’s occupational safety and health, and (4) working environment on employee’s performance through Occupational Health and Safety. The research design used in this study was a causal quantitative research design. The subjects of this study were all production department employees at PT. Sari Sentana Arka. The population of this research was 32 people. Data were collected using questionnaire technique to obtain the data about the working environment, occupational safety and health and employee’s performance. Data were analyzed using path analysis. The results showed that: (1) the working environment had a significant effect on employee’s performance, (2) occupational safety and health had a significant effect on employee’s performance, (3) the working environment had a significant effect on occupational safety and health, and (4) the working environment had a significant effect on employee’s performance through occupational safety and health.
