This article explores my personal journey as an urban Cree and social work student at the University ofBritish Columbia (UBC). From this positionality, I reflect on what it means to Indigenize social work byprivileging personal and professional identity, including ceremony and spirituality, as integral to the wayswe interact with others, particularly between Indigenous Peoples. I offer my own journey connecting tomy identity as an urban Cree person through working with Indigenous plant medicines. In particular, Iwill highlight my experiences at xʷc̓ic̓əsəm—a garden on the stolen and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm [Musqueam] people. Also known as the Indigenous Health Research and Education Garden at the UBC Farm, xʷc̓ic̓əsəm means “the place where we grow” in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓. xʷc̓ic̓əsəm embodies a spacewhere Indigenous Peoples can connect with both human and plant relatives to share stories, engage withtraditional medicines, and heal in a space by us and for us.

La inteligencia emocional y la resolución de problemas son de gran importancia para el trabajo social, puesto que se trata en gran parte de una profesión emocionalmente exigente y estresante, y de una disciplina científica aplicada para la resolución de problemas psicosociales. El objetivo de esta encuesta fue investigar la inteligencia emocional de los estudiantes de trabajo social en relación con sus características demográficas, las características relativas a sus estudios y sus habilidades de resolución de problemas. La muestra fue compuesta de 368 estudiantes inscritos en el programa de licenciatura de la Facultad de Trabajo Social de la Universidad de Ática Occidental en Atenas, Grecia. Para la recolección de los datos, los instrumentos principales fueron el Inventario de Resolución de Problemas (PSI) y la Escala de inteligencia Emocional Wong-Law (WLEIS). Los resultados del estudio demuestran una correlación importante entre la inteligencia emocional y la capacidad para resolver problemas. Se consideran las implicaciones para una investigación adicional y la educación de los estudiantes de trabajo social.Emotional intelligence and problem solving are of great importance for social work, as this is largely an emotionally demanding and stressful profession as well as an applied scientific field of psychosocial problem solving. The aim of this research was to investigate the emotional intelligence of social work students in relation to their demographics and study-related characteristics, and their problem-solving skills. The sample included 368 students from the bachelor’s degree programme of the Department of Social Work of the University of West Attica in Athens, Greece. The students completed both the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI) and Wong Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS). The results show a strong correlation between emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills and suggest that emotional intelligence plays a very important role in decision making, action taking and good performance in social work. Implications for additional research and education of bachelor level social work students are discussed.

Health research tends to be deficit-based by nature; as researchers we typically quantify or qualify absence of health markers or presence of illness. This can create a narrative with far reaching effects for communities already subject to stigmatization. In the context of Indigenous health research, a deficit-based discourse has the potential to contribute to stereotyping and marginalization of Indigenous Peoples in wider society. This is especially true when researchers fail to explore the roots of health deficits, namely colonization, Westernization, and intergenerational trauma, risking conflation of complex health challenges with inherent Indigenous characteristics. In this paper we explore the incompatibility of deficit-based research with principles from several ethical frameworks including the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS2) Chapter 9, OCAP® (ownership, control, access, possession), Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami National Inuit Strategy on Research, and Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) Principles for Global Health Research. Additionally we draw upon cases of deficit-based research and stereotyping in healthcare, in order to identify how this relates to epistemic injustice and explore alternative approaches.

AbstractThis study takes a retrospective look at the educational experiences of Indigenous health professionals who graduated from The University of Queensland's Indigenous Health Program between 1994 and 2005, to understand the enablers for growing an Indigenous health workforce capable of advancing the health of Indigenous peoples. Drawing on the qualitative accounts of 31 students and 9 staff members, this paper examines the enablers to educational success at this time, juxtaposed against current Indigenising agendas in higher education, of aspiration and capacity building alongside the task of embedding Indigenous knowledges within curricula. We look back not as a call to return to Indigenous-specific cohort courses but rather reconsider both the measures of and strategies for success in Indigenous higher education, within health and beyond, interrogating the ideological assumptions that inform them.

This article reflects on the importance of workflow design for students completing field education as part of a social work degree. Specifically, this article examines this in the context of an Aotearoa New Zealand social work student from the University of Waikato (UoW) completing a final placement at a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Battambang Cambodia, Children’s Future International (CFI). The main body of the article reflects on the advantages of designing an overseas placement approach which is planned to flow from theory development to practice implementation, termed “knowledge development and flow” (Henley et al., in press).

Abstract Background There is a complicated and exploitative history of research with Indigenous peoples and accompanying calls to meaningfully and respectfully include Indigenous knowledge in healthcare. Storytelling approaches that privilege Indigenous voices can be a useful tool to break the hold that Western worldviews have within the research. Our collaborative team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, and Indigenous patients, Elders, healthcare providers, and administrators, will conduct a critical participatory, scoping review to identify and examine how storytelling has been used as a method in Indigenous health research. Methods Guided by two-eyed seeing, we will use Bassett and McGibbon’s adaption of Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review methodology. Relevant articles will be identified through a systematic search of the gray literature, core Indigenous health journals, and online databases including Scopus, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, AgeLine, Academic Search Complete, Bibliography of Native North Americans, Canadian Reference Centre, and PsycINFO. Qualitative and mixed-methods research articles will be included if the researchers involved Indigenous participants or their healthcare professionals living in Turtle Island (i.e., Canada and the USA), Australia, or Aotearoa (New Zealand); use storytelling as a research method; focus on healthcare phenomena; and are written in English. Two reviewers will independently screen titles/abstracts and full-text articles. We will extract data, identify the array of storytelling approaches, and critically examine how storytelling was valued and used. An intensive collaboration will be woven throughout all review stages as academic researchers co-create this work with Indigenous patients, Elders, healthcare professionals, and administrators. Participatory strategies will include four relational gatherings throughout the project. Based on our findings, we will co-create a framework to guide the respectful use of storytelling as a method in Indigenous health research involving Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Discussion This work will enable us to elucidate the extent, range, and nature of storytelling within Indigenous health research, to critically reflect on how it has been and could be used, and to develop guidance for the respectful use of this method within research that involves Indigenous peoples and settlers. Our findings will enable the advancement of storytelling methods which meaningfully include Indigenous perspectives, practices, and priorities to benefit the health and wellbeing of Indigenous communities. We are in a time of Indigenous cultural-political resurgence in Canada (Coulthard, 2014; Manuel, 2017; Simpson, 2017; Talaga, 2018). Increasingly, Indigenous Peoples are finding renewed strength, pride, and grounding through cultural practice and the reestablishment of connection to the land. Included in this resurgence are the relationships between people and plants. When we practise our ancestral relationships with our plant relatives, we heal and strengthen ourselves. The depth of connection to place, to ancestors, and to our own mindful presence is amplified when we partake in millennia-old practices of plant cultivation, stewardship, and the integration of plant foods and medicines into our bodies. This time of resurgence emerges from generations of Indigenous Peoples suffering devastating violence, losses, and trauma as a result of colonization. In this paper I address the role that rebuilding Indigenous plant relationships plays in addressing colonial impacts on Indigenous health and in supporting Indigenous cultural and political resurgence. I also put forth Indigenized models for understanding colonial impacts on health and discuss culturally rooted conceptualizations of health that address these impacts from an Indigenous point of view. Finally, I propose a set of guidelines to consider for conducting respectful ethnobotanical research within Indigenous communities. This paper is borne out of a desire for deeper critical engagement with the intersections between colonial history, intergenerational trauma, and Indigenous plant knowledge. Furthermore, this paper acknowledges the strength and resilience of Indigenous Peoples in the face of historical injustice.

The creation of the Turtle Island Journal of Indigenous Health (TIJIH) emerged out of conversations in 2018 between an Indigenous professor1 and non-Indigenous graduate students working within Indigenous health research at the University of Toronto. TIJIH was intended to connect graduate students, Indigenous scholars, and Indigenous communities into a platform for work that focused on Indigenous health. The idea has since morphed into the establishment of a peer-reviewed journal and an accompanying Community of Practice (CoP) where people with an interest in Indigenous health can discuss, collaborate, and co-learn.

The proposed material examines the creative task of students majoring in Social Pedagogy at the University „Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov“ in Burgas, and studying the discipline Art Pedagogy – Part 1 – Music. In the course of the lecture course students get acquainted with the elements of musical expression, as a means of figurative representations and impact of music, with different techniques concerning individual musical activities, with the endless and diverse opportunities that music provides in the use of art pedagogy for social work teachers.Verbal interpretation of music is a necessary component when working with children with special educational needs, at risk and in the norm. Looking at Tchaikovsky’s short and extremely figurative piano piece „The Sick Doll“ from his charming „Children’s Album“, in the form of a short story, tale or essay, students express their personal vision, feeling and transformation of the musical image. The aim of the task is to transcribe the sound image into a verbal one. This requires speed, flexibility and logic in thinking, through imagination and creativity in its manifestation. Children love to listen, especially when they are involved. In search of the right way to solve problems and situations, future social educators could successfully benefit from the conversion of sound into words, according to the needs and deficits of the individual or group.
