Over the past three decades, business managers and academic researchers have shown considerable interest in understanding how information systems (IS) can lead to competitive advantages for firms. Although in the United States researchers have found that IS competences lead to competitive advantages, it remains unknown whether firms working in emerging economies can capitalize on IS competence for competitive advantages. This article examines the moderating effect of the learning intensity of organizations on the relationship between IS competence and competitive advantages in 122 Chinese firms. Data were collected from a mailed survey of 122 information-technology (IT) managers. The results indicate that flexibility of IT infrastructure, IT business skills, and learning intensity have significant effects on competitive advantages. The learning intensity of organizations positively moderates the relationship between IS business skills and competitive advantages, but has no moderating effect on the relationship between the flexibility of IT infrastructure and competitive advantages.

All companies work nowadays at pursuit of innovation, because that will bring better results. The high demand for innovative products and services has led companies to a permanent state of change, either launching a new product or improving the current, enhancing or changing production line, or making administrative change. According to Davenport and Prusak (1998), organizations recognize that knowledge is the only source capable of generating sustainable competitive advantages. Gattoni (2000) corroborates the authors defending that enterprise knowledge management becomes a new strategy to be matured in terms of competitive gains in projects. Models and theoretical approaches show that the relationship between project management, and information and knowledge management generates significant improvements to organizations. This chapter makes a link of both themes aimed at significant improvements in the organization.

Electronic commerce has gained popularity over the years and forced the businesses to go online in order to achieve competitive advantages. Digitalization has led to the dynamicity of markets and this poses a question on the loyalty of customers towards these e-commerce websites.This chapter attempts to examine the relationship between website service quality (WSQ), social media reviews (SMR), customer value (CV), customer satisfaction (CS), and website loyalty (LOY); with the moderating effect of switching cost. Also, the most influential predictor in each cause-effect relationship is determined. The hypothesized conceptual framework is validated using a two-stage approach. In the first stage, the hypotheses are tested and path loadings are generated using PLS-SEM approach. Also, the moderating effect is studied using PLS. Second stage utilizes the advantages of artificial neural network (ANN) to obtain the best explanatory variable in each independent-dependent association.

The value of information technology (IT) in today’s organizations is constantly debated. Researchers and practitioners have examined organizations to try to discover causal links between competitive advantage and IT. This paper presents and details a model that depicts a possible connection between competitive advantage and IT. Furthermore, this paper attempts to show how one major component of the overall IT resources, the IT infrastructure, might yield sustained competitive advantage for an organization. More precisely, IT infrastructure flexibility is examined as an enabler of “core competencies” that have been closely related to sustained competitive advantage in the research literature. The core competencies enabled by IT that are the focus of this study are mass customization and time-to-market. By showing that IT infrastructure flexibility acts as an enabler of these competencies, the relationship to sustained competitive advantage is demonstrated.

This study explored the effects of information technology (IT) resources—in conjunction with IT infrastructure and organizational resources—on organizational capabilities and performance. The study further analyzed the mediating effect of organizational capabilities on the relationship between IT resources and organizational performance. A cross-sectional research design was adopted, and questionnaire copies were administered to senior care supervisors of Taiwanese day care centers, care institutions, and hospitals. In total, 328 valid questionnaire responses were obtained. The study results are summarized as follows: (1) A direct effect analysis revealed that IT infrastructure significantly affected service performance and financial performance; organizational resources significantly affected service performance but did not significantly affect financial performance. (2) A mediation model analysis indicated that organizational capabilities exerted a mediating effect on the relationship between IT resources and organizational performance. These results can serve as a reference for medical care organizations in developing strategies for reviewing internal IT resources, integrating internal and external capabilities, creating a competitive advantage, and boosting their performance.

This chapter develops an additive model of the microeconomic sources of family firm (FF) competitiveness. Its main contribution is the proposal of a new explanatory framework with a perspective incorporating both ex post competitiveness and its determinants in a chain of multi-level causality. Based on fully-specified theory, the framework is designed to explain the complementarity of the effects of the firm's country, industry, district, strategy, and distinctive competences, focusing where appropriate on the case of the FF. The theoretical model also sheds light on the forces that influence the accumulation of sustainable competitive advantages. To that end, this chapter incorporates a particular focus on how the ownership and control structure affects the accumulation of intangible assets that give rise to the so-called family effect.

Competitive intelligence (CI) is a business tool within strategic management, and it is gaining significance as a process that enables companies to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. This study explores the current state of CI in the Spanish hotel industry. For this purpose, a path model has been developed which empirically investigates the relationship between CI use and its backgrounds. The results obtained suggest that environmental and organizational characteristics affect CI effort, and in turn, CI effort affects CI use. This study provides theoretical and practical implications to help managers develop sustainable competitive advantages through the potential that CI offers within the hotel industry.

In today's dynamic, changing business environment, an organization’s sustainable competitive advantages stem from its human resources. This study examined the relationships among management's emphasis on the importance of human resources, employee satisfaction of training, and innovative performance. The present study further investigated the effect of its (owner-/manager-managed) structure on the relationship between management's emphasis on the importance of human resources and employee satisfaction of training. To the end, this study analyzed three time-lagged data, consisting of 387 team leaders and 1,120 employees in a total of 161 companies from the Human Capital Corporate Panel(HCCP). The results showed that the management's emphasis on the importance of human resources is significantly related to employee satisfaction of education and training and innovation in turn, and the first relationship is stronger for the owner-managed firm than for the manager-managed.
