Purpose: Based on the configuration approach, the paper examined the common impact of selected strategic orientations, namely entrepreneurial, technological, and market orientations on the performance of new business ventures. Methodology: This study employs a configurational approach, using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fs/QCA), to analyze the constellations of different strategic orientations that yield superior performance. Result: The results suggest that the performance of a new venture depends on configurations, where firms with high levels of entrepreneurial, technological, and market orientations perform better than firms with other configurations. However, there are other configurations of strategic orientations that also, though to a lesser extent, improve the performance of the entities under study. Conducted research provides a detailed understanding of which different configurations improve the performance of new ventures and which configurations are more effective. Applications: This research can be used for universities, teachers, and students. Dai, O., & Liu, X. (2009). Novelty/Originality: In this research, the model of configurations of entrepreneurial, technological, and market orientations and new ventures performance is presented in a comprehensive and complete manner.

An increasing number of new venture firms are internationalising their business operations early in their lifecycles to achieve superior performance. Taking the perspective of dynamic capability theory, our study sheds light on the effect that heterogeneity in experiential learning has on international new venture (INV) growth in terms of a curvilinear relationship. Specifically, we introduce the concept of internationalisation path heterogeneity to capture the path-specific features of INV experiential learning and capability building and explore the relationship between internationalisation path heterogeneity and INV firm growth. We also argue that this relationship will be moderated by environmental munificence because the cost and benefit of path heterogeneity is bounded. We test the hypotheses based on empirical analysis of a longitudinal dataset of 1054 INVs from 58 countries. Overall, this study provides a dynamic and fine-grained view of the role played by internationalisation path heterogeneity in driving the growth of INVs.

PurposeThe study aims to bridge entrepreneurial capability, export market orientation and the international performance of international new ventures (INVs). Thus, multi-scale entrepreneurial capabilities have been adopted to provide more profound insights into the literature on early internationalisation. Since little is known about the antecedents of export market orientation, the performance outcome of this is ambiguous. This study aims to enhance knowledge in this pressing research area.Design/methodology/approachThe sample of this study consists of data (354 firms) from INVs operating in the apparel industry of an emerging economy, namely, Bangladesh. Structural equation modelling has been used to investigate the hypothesised relationships.FindingsFor the Deshpandé and Farley (1999) scale, the effect of general entrepreneurial capability on intelligence dissemination and responsiveness is positively significant. Similarly, the effects of international entrepreneurial capability on customer orientation, intelligence generation, dissemination and responsiveness are positively significant. However, general entrepreneurial capability has non-significant effects on customer orientation and intelligence generation. The results also showed that export market orientation positively mediates the relationship between international entrepreneurial capability and firm performance. For the Morris and Paul (1987) scale, the hypothesised relationships between capabilities and market orientation are positively significant and, therefore, support the mediating relationships for both general entrepreneurial capability and international entrepreneurial capability.Originality/valueMerely having capabilities without acknowledging the firm's strategic orientations is not sufficient to secure superior performance. The authors urge entrepreneurs to capitalise on their entrepreneurial capabilities to leverage organisation-wide export-market-oriented behaviour to achieve superior international performance in emerging economies.

Network ties help international new ventures (INVs) achieve success. However, researchers have paid little attention to the duration of network ties and the impact of duration on performance. I draw on network analysis and the resources-based view to examine this area and propose a conceptual model that depicts the variables and mediating factors for INV performance. The model explains how INVs acquire, manage and exploit ties to achieve superior performance. I argue that resource-constrained INVs can minimize their investment of time and capital, and maximize the economic effect of ties, by using briefer time periods and short-term projects. I also propose that INVs adopt a 'hedging' or portfolio approach to managing ties, by collecting larger number of prospects to reduce uncertainty. The model and propositions contribute to the body of literature in network analysis and INVs. The paper highlights implications for research and practice.

This study applied qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) as a viable method for new venture emergence. Through the inclusion of four-dimension variables from individuals, founding strategy, startup process, and environment, the study illuminates the importance of factor independence, factor interdependence, and factor complex causality in understanding new venture emergence. This study demonstrates the benefits of QCA approach to entrepreneurship research, a complement to the conventional variance-based approach. Limitations of QCA and future research directions are provided.

The new venture starts in an equivocal situation. To use and build trusted relationships with external actors, notably customers in spe, is an important way for the entrepreneur to establish business. In an inductive in-depth case study between entrepreneurs and customers, trust was studied. For two business start-ups the entrepreneurs' building and use of trust in action processes between the new ventures and some of their customers was investigated covering 5 years. Using a frame of reference concerning new business trust, trustbuilding in action processes is identified in interviews. Patterns of trustbuilding are summarised, conclusions concerning trustbuilding in the cases are presented and discussed. Some possible contributions for practice and theory are outlined.

Purpose The extant literature has challenged the original idea that pure strategy leads to superior performance. This shift has raised the question whether pure strategy is still superior to hybrid strategy? The purpose of this paper is to investigate the strategy-performance relationship in this context and the performance of pure, hybrid, and reactor strategies is compared. Design/methodology/approach Scoring method is used for identification of strategic types. ANOVA, univariate, and multivariate regression models are applied for empirical analysis using seven-year financial data of 307 Pakistani joint stock firms from 12 industries. Findings The results show that firms in Pakistan practice hybrid and reactor strategies rather than pure strategies. Overall, defending and analyzing strategies perform better than the prospecting strategies. However, the performance of the strategic types varies among industries and firm size. Strategy and firm size are the better predictors of firm performance. Originality/value The proposed methodology can be replicated to identify strategic groups and strategic orientations proposed by typological classifications when longitudinal studies are carried out. The process for identification of pure, hybrid, flexible, consistent, and reactor strategies is a key contribution to the literature.

In examining the global landscape, it is clear that some cultures produce many more entrepreneurs than others. To explore this phenomenon, we take a cognitive perspective because it is assumed that the way one thinks has a significant impact on the intention to start a new business. Through the development of this model we clarify why some Individuals across different cultures tend to be more prolific in starting new ventures than others both Inside and outside the home country. In illustrating the model, the Chinese population and their high propensity to start new businesses when they migrate to new countries are discussed. Implications for competitive advantage and other areas of cross-cultural research are made.

This paper presents the results of a longitudinal survey of 100 owner-managed new and small ventures. The survey was designed to explore the strategic orientations of new ventures and their performance implications. Results of the analytical study based on the application of factor analysis and cluster analysis indicate the existence of multiple strategies adopted by new ventures in order to remain competitive. The multiple regression models and cluster-wise performance analysis further indicate that a venture's competitive strategy significantly influences its performance. On the other hand, a complete lack of strategic orientation in a new venture may lead to negative performance and subsequently may even threaten its very survival.

A high precision and small size Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) inclination sensor which is used for slope monitoring is proposed in this paper. The FBG inclination sensor has a pendulum structure for high precision and a circular body for easy installation in the common inclinometer pipe. The sensitivity of the FBG inclination sensor can reach 400 pm/deg by optimizing its parameters. The test results show the superior performance of this FBG inclination sensor in terms of static characteristics, and its sensitivity is 406.6 pm/deg. The comparison experiment shows the static characteristics of the FBG inclination sensor are better than the traditional electrical inclination sensor.
