Bangladesh has a rich shipping history. The country is dependent economically as well as socially and politically on the industry. While, the country is slowly regaining global recognition, the industry is no less on challenges. The seafarers face major issues due to the factors such as conditions of the maritime education and training institutes, forged documentation, negative reputation of the country, etc. Further, the seafarers of Bangladesh also lack skills and training when compared to the seafarers of the other developed countries. Moreover, the country lacks technological resources too, which makes it even more difficult for the seafarers to grow in the industry. The article looked at the different sets of improvements that can be made to the shipping industry and make it easy for the seafarers to get proper jobs in the industry. This study explored the challenges and opportunities for the seafarers and the industry though a review of literature.

Abstract Recently, the quality of Maritime Education and Training (MET) has drawn more attention from employers of the shipping industry, because incompetent officers have frequently contributed to ship accidents. The authors intend to explore answers to three questions: (1) Is the quality of Chinese MET satisfactory to the maritime stakeholders? (2) What are the major factors affecting the quality of cadet training? (3) Are there feasible solutions to improve the quality of MET? The authors take China, a major seafarers supplying country, as empirical evidence to disclose the causes of the problems. By an exploratory factor analysis technique, this paper presents the findings of semi-structured interviews and questionnaire surveys and identifies four principal factors affecting the quality of MET in China. Shortage of skillful instructors, lack of onboard training, over-reliance on theoretical teaching, and limited funding sources are prominent factors in this context. Practical solutions are proposed for the purpose of improving the overall competence of Chinese cadets expected to become the dynamic workforce for the global shipping industry.

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the maritime supply chain and called for accelerated adoption of digital technologies in various aspects of maritime operations, including the area of maritime education and training (MET). This paper aims to discuss the current maritime simulator-based training and educational practices that forms an integral part in seafarer training and competency development. The study provides a review of the existing simulators in use in MET, and discusses upon the technological and pedagogical advancement of maritime simulator-based training interventions with predictions regarding the future MET practices with use of virtual reality and cloud-based simulators. This study—by focusing on ship’s bridge operations—highlights the characteristics of various types of simulators and also discusses the role of instructors, challenges, and opportunities involving future simulator-based MET due to accelerated adoption of digital technologies and the need to comply with pandemic-related restrictions for MET institutes. The analysis generated in the paper may contribute to the ongoing discussion regarding the future of simulator-based MET and the fulfillment of the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 in the maritime sector.

The study determined the maritime students’ knowledge on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the University of Cebu Maritime Education and Training Center, Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines, Summer 2011. The findings served as bases for a proposed action plan. This study aimed to answer the questions: (1) what is the profile of the respondents in terms of age, year level, civil status, type of high school education, socio-economic status, place of origin, and sources of information on STIs; (2) what is the respondents’ level of knowledge on sexually transmitted infections in terms of basic knowledge on STIs, mode of transmission, sexual practices, and prevention; (3) is there a significant relationship between the respondents’ profile and their level of knowledge on STIs; (4) based on the findings of the study, what action plan may be proposed.This study utilized the descriptive-correlational design using a researcher-made questionnaire. The respondents of the study were 177 maritime students of the University of Cebu Maritime Education and Training Center. The responses of the study were subjected to statistical treatment with the use of frequencies, simple percentage and chi-square Test of Independence.Majority of the respondents were 19-21 years old, single, third year level, who graduated from a private high school, with family income of less than 5,000 Philippine pesos, and are residents of Cebu City. They cited friends as the main source of information about STIs. The respondents’ level of knowledge on STIs was satisfactory. Their knowledge on the mode of transmission, sexual practices, and prevention was fair. This qualitative study explored the perceived challenges ELL teachers encounter when using and implementing digital games as educational tools. Six ELL teachers were interviewed, and a phenomenological lens was used to analyze the data. The synthesis of textural and structural meanings and essences as a last step of phenomenological data analysis lead to two major findings of ELL teachers' experiences with digital games: logistical and pedagogical. The findings indicate that there is a lack of resources, support, time, and overwhelming choices that characterize the logistical challenges. On the other hand, ELL teachers teaching philosophy, curriculum, and training highlights the pedagogical challenge of incorporating digital games.

Global consumption of seafood is steadily increasing, as is the variety of seafood, including dishes with raw or undercooked fish, leading to an increased risk of seafood-borne parasitic diseases. To address today’s challenges to understand the biology and ecology of these parasites in an ever-changing environment and to tackle their pathogenicity, multidisciplinary research is needed. In addition, the gap between research and stakeholders must be bridged to decrease the risk these parasites pose to public health. A “One-Health” approach to research is necessary to ensure that consumers, aquatic animals, and environmental health questions are assessed in an integrated and holistic manner, resulting in a more comprehensive understanding of the issues associated with seafood-borne parasitic diseases and potential solutions. However, when it comes to seafood-borne parasitic diseases, there is limited guidance available for a “One-Health” approach since these diseases can be less known. In this article, the focus is on parasitic diseases caused by seafood, which have been less studied even in some developed countries where seafood is popular. A brief overview of some of the seafood-borne parasitic diseases is provided followed by the significance of the awareness among various stakeholders in a country. In this article, it is argued that researchers and stakeholders are closely connected and a knowledge gap in one can result in a gap in knowledge and awareness in the other, causing an inability to accurately estimate the issues caused by these parasites. It is suggested that raising awareness, supporting research and training of all stakeholders are crucial for the prevention of seafood-borne parasitic diseases and the protection of the health of seafood consumers.
