INFLUENCE OF MORPHOLOGY, PHASE COMPOSITION AND CONTENT OF ALUMINUM OXIDE PARTICLES ON RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF AQUEOUS SUSPENSIONS BASED ON THEM

This work investigated the chemical and phase composition of aluminum oxide powders obtained by various methods (alkoxide, codeposition, thermal and plasma-chemical). The physicomechanical, thermophysical and thermal properties of ceramic samples based on them have been determined. The effect of the nature of the aluminum oxide powder and the production process parameters on the sedimentation stability of aqueous suspensions based on them has been determined. The influence of the content of particles of aluminum oxide, buffer solution and rheological additives on the viscosity, sedimentation and aggregate stability of aqueous suspensions has been determined.

The studied samples were prepared from polyethylene (PE) polymer which was coated with modified polycaprolactone (PCL) film in order to obtain bilayer films. Thin PCL film was modified with casein/aluminum oxide compound to enhance vapor permeability as well as mechanical and thermal properties of PE/PCL films. Casein/aluminum oxide modifiers were used in order to achieve some functional properties of polymer film that can be used in various applications, e.g., reduction of water vapor permeability (WVTR) and good mechanical and thermal properties. Significant improvement was observed in mechanical properties, especially in tensile strength as well as in water vapor values. Samples prepared with aluminum oxide particles indicated significantly lower values up to 60%, and samples that were prepared with casein and 5% Al2O3 showed the lowest WVTR value.

ZnO-Pr6O11-Dy2O3-based varistor ceramics doped with 0~1.5 mol% La2O3 were fabricated by a conventional ceramic method. All the samples were sintered at 1350 oCfor 2 h. The phase composition and microstructure of the ceramic samples have been investigated by XRD, SEM and EDS. The results of SEM micrographs indicated that the La2O3 additives can promote ZnO grain’s growth, and the rare earth elements dispersed mainly in the intergranular phase observed by EDS. The electrical properties of the samples determined by the V-I curves revealed that the breakdown voltage of samples decreases from 508 V/mm to about 100 V/mm with the increase of La2O3, and the nonlinear exponent also decreases from 20.2 to 13.2. The typical leakage current is about 10.2 μA for the sample doped with 0.5 mol% La2O3.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding and airborne particle abrasion using aluminum oxide particles on the flexural strength of a joint between ceramic and cobalt-chromium alloys. Methods: The specimens were cast and welded using TIG, then divided into 6 groups (n = 10) and subjected to blasting with 250 μm, 100 μm, and 50 μm aluminum oxide particles. Ceramic systems were applied to the central part of all specimens. A three-point bending test using a velocity of 0.5 mm/m was performed on the specimens to measure flexural strength. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey’s test. Results: TIG welding demonstrated the lowest resistance compared with the non-welded groups. Airborne particle abrasion using 250 μm aluminum oxide particles demonstrated greater resistance in the welded groups (p < 0.05). Mixed faults were found in all specimens. Conclusion: TIG welding decreased the bond strength, and the particle size of aluminum oxide did not affect the metal-ceramic bond in groups without TIG welding.

Volume–pressure curves obtained from isolated atelectatic guinea pig lungs under normal controlled conditions are compared with those obtained from animals having inhaled fine aluminum or iron oxide particles. After particles inhalation, the inflation curves are deviated to the right, showing a constricting effect. Previous exposure to low concentration of isoproterenol aerosol fails to reverse completely the constricting effect induced by a prior inhalation of aluminum oxide particles although in combination with diphenhydramine or at a higher concentration an antagonistic action appears. Cyproheptadine aerosolation also prevents the constricting effect of inhaled aluminum oxide particles The constricting effect of iron oxide was not prevented by those dilating aerosols at concentrations used.
