Purpose – This study examines social reporting by Islamic banks with special emphasis on themes related to social justice. By using critical theory and “immanent critique”, the study attempts to explain and delineate reasons for disclosures and silences in Islamic banks ' annual reports and web sites vis-à-vis social justice. Design/methodology/approach – The approach taken was a content analysis of annual reports and web sites of 19 Islamic banks. Findings – Islamic banks ' disclosures emphasise their religious character through claims that they adhere to Sharia ' s teachings. Their disclosures, however, lack specific or detailed information regarding schemes or initiatives vis-à-vis poverty eradication or enhancing social justice. Research limitations/implications – Limitations associated with content analysis of annual reports and internet web sites apply. This study focuses on Islamic banks ' social roles. Further studies of banks ' social roles in society in general are of interest. Practical implications – Drawing attention of Islamic banks and other stakeholders to the gap between the rhetorical religious and ethical claims of Islamic banks and their activities (as depicted through their disclosures) opens up the possibility of a positive change in Islamic banks ' actual social roles. Originality/value – The study fills a gap in both social accounting and Islamic accounting literatures with its emphasis on social justice and poverty eradication. The study contributes to the very scarce literature linking religion (especially Islam), critical theory, social accounting and Islamic accounting. It goes beyond previous research in Islamic accounting literature by exposing contradictions in the Islamic banking industry ' s rhetoric regarding their social role in society.

The aim of this study is to reflect about the view of digital technologies in L2 teaching-learning. With that aim, a content analysis study was carried out in the Brazilian database of theses and dissertations defended between 2015 and 2019 to analyze the view of technologies in the area of L2 teaching-learning. Drawing on the Critical Theory concept of semiformation and content analysis techniques, the view/use of technologies in L2 teaching-learning was analyzed in the corpus of 22 works. Results suggest challenges in the advancement of research and critical use of technologies in L2 teaching-learning in Brazil once few studies promoted a reflexive dialogue with the participants in order make them think about the critical use of technologies in L2 teaching-learning. The study concludes with the suggestion for more investment in the human formation process through the critical use of technologies in the teaching-learning of L2.

Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar os relatos dos gestores de micro e pequenas empresas de João Pessoa-PB sob a perspectiva da Teoria Crítica, discutindo aspectos destes relatos associados aos mitos e fatos defendidos por Mintzberg (1990). A fundamentação teórica aborda três aspectos centrais: a importância da ciência da administração nos contextos teórico e prático; os mitos e fatos gerenciais e; a perspectiva da Teoria Crítica (TC) e suas reflexões no âmbito organizacional. Participaram da pesquisa 12 gestores, divididos em: graduados em administração, outra graduação e gestores sem formação superior. Foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas, sendo, posteriormente, analisadas por meio da análise de conteúdo. Os resultados revelaram alguns aspectos peculiares entre os grupos de entrevistados, tais como: a necessidade dos mesmos em ter auto responsabilidade dentro e fora da empresa para buscar as informações e os conhecimentos necessários para garantir a sua sobrevivência ou ascensão no mercado atuante. Além disso, verificou-se que a abertura da gestão frente às propostas, sugestões ou críticas dos funcionários é um aspecto fundamental para tornar o ambiente de trabalho um lugar mais democrático e favorável às discussões pertinentes aos interesses de todos os colaboradores.  This study aims to analyze the reports of the managers of micro and small enterprises of João Pessoa-PB from the perspective of Critical Theory, discussing aspects of these reports associated to the myths and facts defended by Mintzberg (1990). The theoretical framework addresses three main aspects: the importance of management science in theoretical and practical contexts; the myths and facts and management and; the perspective of Critical Theory (CT) and its reflections on the organizational level. The participants were 12 managers, divided into: managers degree in business administration, with other graduate and managers without higher education. Semi-structured interviews, and later analyzed using content analysis were performed. The results revealed some peculiar aspects of the interview groups, such as the need for them to have self-responsibility inside and outside the company to find the information and knowledge needed to ensure their survival or rise in the active market and the sense of constant learning. Furthermore, it was found that opening the front to management proposals, suggestions or criticisms of the employees is a key aspect to make the workplace a more democratic and favorable place to discussions relevant to the interests of all employees.

The Gullah Geechee people originally came to the United States as enslaved Africans from the coast of West Africa. Because of harsh conditions along the sea islands, spanning from North Carolina to Florida, the enslaved were often left to work the land while plantation owners retreated to less hostile, inland environments. As a result, many Gullah Geechee cultural, linguistic, and artistic practices remained intact. Today, there is interest in preserving these rich traditions. Because of environmental and cultural threats, preservation efforts must focus on sustainability. This qualitative, critical theory research includes interviews with musical performers from the sea islands and details their perceptions of the role music plays in sustainable heritage tourism. The researchers explored if music performance could be used to promote preservation locally, through tourism to cultural corridor sites, and globally, through touring musical acts. Participants urged caution with traditional tourism models and emphasized the role of younger generations in preserving Gullah Geechee music.

This paper presents a critical approach to the way organizations justify adopting enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. An earlier critical theory provides a framework for exploring the themes of communication, rationality and domination. Technology, process and organization are forms of domination that may appear in the context of ERP adoption. The literature on the formal and informal (qualitative) justification of information technology investment is reviewed and assessed. The significance of ERP systems is examined and also motives for their adoption. The data used for the study are electronically mediated justifications of ERP adoption that were presented by universities. A content analysis is applied to these data. The paper concludes that, despite reservations about the sensitivity of domination and emancipation to identification and measurement, there is some evidence to suggest people are considered to occupy a subservient role to technology, process and organization.

Whether and to what extent a college or university vision is embraced, transformed into action, and dispersed to the campus community by academic advisors is largely dependent on the rhetoric of the vision statement. Through a content analysis of a nation-wide sample of vision and mission statements from NACADA-membership institutions, we isolated key linguistic components that constitute a well-conceived, effective, and easily diffused institutional vision. The prevalence of these components and the types of academic institutions most likely to possess them are discussed. Ways in which this information can be used by advising supervisors to evaluate their own institution's vision and the vision of their advising operation are presented.Relative Emphasis: theory, research, practice

A new round of debate on the urban question is today unfolding, in relation to which key aspects of inherited urban theories, including those produced in recent decades, now appear inadequate or even obsolete. Against this background, this chapter considers the wide-ranging epistemological, conceptual, and methodological challenges posed by emergent patterns and pathways of planetary urban transformation, which are relativizing the inherited spatial dualisms (city/countryside, urban/rural, human/nonhuman) and scalar imaginaries that have long anchored the field of urban studies. The production of these dramatically rescaled urban spaces engenders major challenges for critical theory, research, imagination, and practice.
