This study aims to analyze the reports of the managers of micro and small enterprises of João Pessoa-PB from the perspective of Critical Theory, discussing aspects of these reports associated to the myths and facts defended by Mintzberg (1990). The theoretical framework addresses three main aspects: the importance of management science in theoretical and practical contexts; the myths and facts and management and; the perspective of Critical Theory (CT) and its reflections on the organizational level. The participants were 12 managers, divided into: managers degree in business administration, with other graduate and managers without higher education. Semi-structured interviews, and later analyzed using content analysis were performed. The results revealed some peculiar aspects of the interview groups, such as the need for them to have self-responsibility inside and outside the company to find the information and knowledge needed to ensure their survival or rise in the active market and the sense of constant learning. Furthermore, it was found that opening the front to management proposals, suggestions or criticisms of the employees is a key aspect to make the workplace a more democratic and favorable place to discussions relevant to the interests of all employees.

In higher education in the UAE, English is used as the medium of instruction, while academic Arabic is relegated to few electives that can be also taken in English. Policy makers perceive the transition from Arabic medium instruction (ami) schools to English medium instruction (emi) universities as normal and automatic. This study aims to explore how students see this transition, and whether they find it automatic and smooth, or embroiled in hardship and difficulties. It is based on a critical theoretical framework and is approached using exploratory critical methodology. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty undergraduate Arab students in three English-medium universities. Results showed that students faced psychological, academic, social and cultural difficulties associated with the transition from Arabic schools to English-medium instruction universities.

The research aims to know the impact of sustainability orientation on sustainable performance. The data has been collected through a survey and the probability-random sampling technique has been employed. The study sample is micro and small enterprises in Tunisia. The organizational level is the unit of analysis, which are the owners of these enterprises. It has been concluded that managers' orientations have an influence on environmental and social performance, but their orientations towards sustainability did not impact economic performance. The study has suggested that future research could investigate different organizations irrespective of their size and industry that would make it easy to generalize results.

The research objective was to analyze the determninant factors of Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) in the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) of the traditional food centers in Bandung. It used the EO dimension at the organizational level. Five dimensions were used to measure the EO level, namely risk-taking, innovativeness, competitive aggressiveness, proactiveness, and autonomy. The questionare’s was distributed to eight MSEs in Bandung. The sample size is 100 employee Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis techniques with Partial Least Square (PLS) was used to test the samples. This research shows that the EO level in the micro and small enterprises in the traditional food centers in Bandung is at a moderate level. Although EO of MSEs in the traditional food centers in Bandung is in the moderate category, the results of testing on the EO model find out that each EO dimension forms a significant EO construct. The four dominant and recommended dimensions forming an EO construct in MSEs are risk-taking, innovativeness, competitive aggressiveness, and proactiveness. Among the four dimensions, risk-taking is the dominant dimension. It indicates that courage in taking risks in MSEs is a natural characteristic of the EO in the traditional food centers in Bandung.

The research axis revolves around how public projects can influence the digital inclusion of micro and small enterprises. The objective proposed in the work is to study the concepts of information technology for public projects aimed at the digital inclusion of MSEs. The methodology used has a qualitative approach of a descriptive nature, based on content analysis. Through the study it was concluded that the use of technologies contributes to the growth and maintenance of micro and small enterprises in the competitive market, but that the resources to accompany the technological evolution are scarce, and therefore, the development of public projects aimed at inclusion of micro and small businesses seems to be essential.

The chapter provided a comprehensive review of previous studies on the adoption of information and communication technology (ICT). The study further conducted a qualitative study on the adoption of “bring your own device” (BYOD). The study systematically reviewed technology acceptance theories and models such as TAM, TPB, and UTAUT at the individual level and technology adoption theories such as “innovation diffusion theory,” “technology-organization-environment framework,” and “institutional theory” at the organizational level. Thereby, key factors predicting the ICT adoption at the individual, organizational, institutional, and environmental level were identified. A theoretical framework that explains the ICT adoption and the consumerization process was proposed based on the theories. The qualitative data collected by semi-structured interviews with senior-level managers was analyzed using the content analysis. The findings suggested that perceived financial cost, compatibility, privacy, and security concerns were significant factors in predicting the enterprise's adoption of BYOD.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to summarise previous studies to develop a theoretical framework useful to describe and classify competitive intelligence (CI) practices. It is applied to study CI practices developed by Spanish universities, comparing usual practices with those developed during the process of adaptation of degrees to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), with strong challenges. Design/methodology/approach – The research employs a mixed-methods approach (semi-structured interviews and questionnaires) developed in two phases. It has focused on the academic offer, which represents 46.35 per cent of the degrees presented in 2009, belonging to 90.16 per cent of Spanish universities. Findings – The results reveal predominance of incipient and reactive practices, oriented to the tactical level. During the adaptation process, these practices evolved due to the perception of the involvement of universities in the adaptation process. In addition, the proposed theoretical framework could be a tool to study CI both in other university management areas and other kind of organisations. Research limitations/implications – This research has been applied only to a critic incident: the design of university academic offer to be adapted to the EHEA. More studies about CI practices in other areas of universities should be done, using the same framework proposed in this study. Practical implications – This framework based on research done in business sector can be applied to any kind or organisations, including NGO and public sectors. Originality/value – Management tools used in the business sector, such as CI, have been adopted by Higher Educations Institutions, but while CI has been studied in depth in the business sector, it has scarcely been studied in higher education. This framework can be applied to any kind or organisations.

Iran has experienced a significant decline in the fertility rate over the past decades. One of the principal reasons for this decline is decreased willingness to bear children, especially in the highly educated couples subset. For that reason, developing and implementing a successful population policy is essential to increase fertility in this subpopulation. The study aimed at explaining the unwillingness to bear children in this subgroup. The qualitative research was conducted using a content analysis approach based on the data acquired using in-depth and semi-structured interviews with couples with an educational level of master’s and above, and without children or having one child. In this study, in total, 40 couples (40 women and 40 men) were interviewed. Of the participants, 57.5% had one child. Four main themes were developed using conventional content analysis: rationality and awareness, gender equality and willingness to bear children, cultural and social renovation, and concern about the child’s future. The results indicated that different factors such as economic, social, and cultural reasons and less hope in the future affect unwillingness to bear children in highly educated couples. Taking into account, these factors are essential at the time of development and implementation of pro-natalist policies.
