This study was aimed at investigating adaptive reasoning ability of junior high school students through the implementation of the creative problem solving model. This study employed a mixed-method approach using an embedded concurrent strategy. Thirty students were selected randomly as the sample from 180 Year 8 students, and six students were selected to be observed and further interviewed after the final test. The instruments used were a test and interview questions. The results showed that there was a significant increase in the students' ability between the pre-test and post-test. In addition, there was also an increase in the ability of the six students based on an adaptive reasoning rubric. The increase was more dominant for the first and fifth indicators while the increases of the second and fourth indicators varied. Some students were able to solve the problem based on the indicators, but it was incomplete due to miscalculation, and some students were lacking in the ability to find the pattern and drawing a correct conclusion as a result of the profound basic knowledge. In general, these results indicated that students were able to develop adaptive reasoning although the maximum score could not be achieved. The use of creative problem solving model to develop adaptive reasoning ability: Inductive, deductive and intuitive

Junior High School Students’ Understanding of the Science Concept Through Problem Solving Learning on the Topic of Change Things Around our Life  AbstractResearch was conducted to describe the results of student learning through problem solving model. Sampling was done by purposive sampling. Subjects are 66 students of class VII. Data were obtained using paper based test. Data analysis techniques by observing the development of n-gain. This study showed that student understanding of pretest is 52,28 point categorized as low and posttest is 77,40 point categorized as good. It mean that the problem solving model suitable to the junior high school science class and encourage students to constantly build understanding of the concept. Construction of the concept through the process of connecting knowledge in solving learning problems. Keywords: problem solving, conceptual understanding, declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, changes things around us.

Abstract — This research is a research review of articles with the aim of proving a hypothesis. The articles that the researchers examined are articles in the last ten years, both nationally and internationally. The hypothesis that the researchers want to prove is that there is an increase in the problem solving ability of junior high school students in mathematics using the IDEAL Problem Solving model based on Game Based Learning, especially in Indonesia. IDEAL Problem Solving model has steps, namely Identify the problem (identifying problems), Define goals (defining goals), Explore possible strategies (explore possible strategies), Anticipate outcomes and actions (anticipating outputs and actions), and Look back and learn (reviewing and learning). The IDEAL Problem Solving model is suitable for solving well-structured type problems. The type of game in this study is Role Playing Game. The conclusion of this research is that the application of the IDEAL Problem Solving model based on Game Based Learning with game types of Role Playing Games can increase motivation, interest, and problem solving abilities of junior high school students, especially in mathematics. Keywords —Game Based Learning; IDEAL Problem Solving; Mathematics; Problem Solving Skills. Model IDEAL Problem Solving memiliki langkah-langkah yaitu Identify the problem (mengidentifikasi masalah), Define goal (mendefinisikan tujuan), Explore possible strategies (menelusuri strategi-strategi yang mungkin), Anticipate outcomes and act (mengantisipasi keluaran dan beraksi), dan Look back and learn (meninjau kembali dan belajar).

High school students learning a second programming language, students learning a first language, and students receiving no programming instruction were compared to determine whether instruction in a second language helps produce transfer of problem-solving skills. Approximately half of each programming group received a two-week problem-solving intervention. Six problem-solving measures were used: use of re-useable procedures, solution of problems by analogy, solution of Hanoi-like problems (recursive procedures), creative problem solving, use of the biconditional, and debugging. Students receiving the problem-solving intervention in their first programming language course improved ( p < .05) on the use of the biconditional and on creative problem solving. Students learning a second language were significantly better at debugging ( p < .05) than those learning only a first language. Suggestions are made for further research.
