Background and PurposeCancer survivors continue to cope with significant stressors after completing treatment. The Brief COPE (Carver, 1997) is frequently used to measure coping; however, its factor structure remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the best factor conceptualization of the Brief COPE for use among breast cancer survivors.MethodsBreast cancer survivors (N = 1,127) completed the Brief COPE. We conducted confirmatory factor analyses comparing several a priori models based on research in cancer-relevant populations.ResultsOf the eight models examined, the 14-factor model of the Brief COPE showed the best fit.ConclusionsDespite efforts to simplify the structure of the Brief COPE, our results suggest coping among breast cancer survivors is best assessed using Carver's (1997) original 14-factor conceptualization.

The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) Scale has been widely used to measure depressive symptoms. This study compared the measurement invariances for one-, two-, three-, and four-factor models of the CES-D across English-speaking Whites and Asians: White Americans, White Australians, Indians, Filipinos, and Singaporeans. White Americans and Australians, Indians, Filipinos, and Singaporeans English speakers (782 men and 824 women) whose ages ranged from 20 to 79 years, completed the CES-D. They were recruited from the data pool of the 2013 and 2014 Coping and Health Survey. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the original four-factor model showed the best fit, compared to the other models. Mean and covariance structure analyses showed that the factor means of the CES-D subscales among Whites were significantly lower than were those among Asians; the score gap was particularly high between Whites and Indians. Additionally, Indians scored the highest on all subscales of the CES-D compared to all other countries. Overall, CES-D scores among Whites were lower than those among Asians.

The authors conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of the Asian American Racism-Related Stress Inventory (AARRSI) to further examine the underlying factor structure in a total sample of 1,273 Asian American participants. In the first step of analysis, an exploratory factor analysis with 651 participants yielded a 13-item two-factor solution to the data. In the second step, a confirmatory factor analysis with 622 participants supported both the 13-item two-factor model and the original 29-item three-factor model in the cross-validation sample and generational and ethnicity analyses. The two-factor and three-factor models produced internal consistency estimates ranging from .81 to .95. In addition, the authors examined convergent and criterion related evidence for 13-item and 29-item versions of the AARRSI. Given its brief nature and generally good fit across generational status and ethnicity, the authors suggest that the 13-item AARRSI might be advantageous for research and assessment endeavors.

AbstractAlthough much research has been done to study the working memory structure in children in their first school years, the relation of cognitive constructs involved in this process remains uncertain. In particular, it is unclear whether working memory is a domain general construct that coordinates separate codes of verbal and visuospatial storage or whether it is a domain-specific construct with distinct resources of verbal and visuospatial information. This paper investigates the structure of working memory, by using the Working Memory Test Battery for Children (WMTB-C) and by doing confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) on a sample of Portuguese children (n = 103) between 8 and 9 years of age. The results of the confirmatory factor analyses that provide the best fit of the data correspond to the model that includes Central Executive and Visuospatial Sketchpad in the same factor, co-varying with a Phonological Loop factor. Moreover, the traditional working memory tripartite structure – based on the Baddeley and Hitch Model – revealed good fit to the data.

The Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CHSA) provided an opportunity to examine the positive aspects of aging. CHSA-2 included the 18-item Ryff multidimensional measure of well-being, which taps six core theoretical dimensions of positive psychological functioning. The measure was administered to 4,960 seniors without severe cognitive impairment or dementia at CSHA-2. Intercorrelations across scales were generally low. At the same time, the internal consistency reliability of each of the 6 subscales was not found to be high. Confirmatory factor analyses provide support for a 6-factor model, although some items demonstrate poor factor loadings. The well-being measures in CSHA-2 provide an opportunity to examine broad, descriptive patterns of well-being in Canadian seniors.

The model for representing intergroup forgiveness suggested by Neto, Pinto & Mullet (2007a) has been extended through the examination of data from a large sample (n = 1036) of Asian (Cambodians and East Timorese) and African (Angolans, Guineans and Mozambicans) adults who have been personally affected by long-term wars and conflicts in their area. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses showed that a nine-factor model could adequately fit the whole set of data. Overall, a large majority of the participants agreed with the view that forgiveness as an intergroup process was conceivable. For a majority of the participants: (a) the aim of the intergroup forgiveness process is reconciliation with the former offender; (b) the process does not need to be strictly conditional on adequate reparation and compensation; (c) it should be democratic — in other words, forgiveness should not be decided solely by politicians, traditional or religious authorities; (d) it belongs to the forgiver—forgiven dyad — in other words, interference from the international community should be minimal; (e) it should be public (and not a negotiation between members of the elite) — forgiveness should be announced to the whole community using broad international languages; and (f) it should be an all-encompassing process, that is, it should encompass all the members of the requesting group, all the members of the forgiving group and all the offences.

Psychopathy is an important clinical construct in explaining criminal behavior, determining the likelihood of treatment response, and evaluating risk assessment. The majority of past research has focused on male offenders or male forensic patients. Psychopathy in females is relatively unexplored. The current study was designed to further investigate the underlying dimensions of psychopathy in females. Utilizing a sample of 119 female inmates from a large metropolitan area jail, a series of confirmatory factor analyses was undertaken. Previous research and clinical tradition suggest the use of a two-factor conceptualization of psychopathy. More recent research suggests that a three-factor model may better capture the underlying dimensions of psychopathy. Two-factor models of psychopathy were not confirmed. However, the three-factor model reproduced the data extremely well. Clinical and research implications of this finding are addressed.

Studies have conceptualized work involvement as a multidimensional construct. However researchers have so far provided inconclusive agreement on the dimensionality of this latent factor. Therefore, a re-conceptualization of work involvement scale is crucial due to the inconsistencies in the measure of this construct. This study attempts to examine the construct validity of the work involvement measure by using a Malay-translated version of the instrument. A priori proposition was made that work involvement is a single-dimensional construct. This means that work involvement measurement can be represented by a single factor consisting of five items. SPSS version 14 and AMOS 16 were used to analyze the data. The findings supported the single-dimensionality of work involvement factor based on the results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The research results also showed acceptable internal consistency reliability for the work involvement factor, which suggested the utility of the five-item work involvement measure in the Malaysian context.

Abstract Background: Assessing body image among breast cancer survivors is essential to the development of good treatment and rehabilitation plans. Culturally-appropriate methods and instruments are needed for body image assessment. The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Persian version of Body Image after Breast Cancer Questionnaire. Methods: In this methodological study, the Body Image after Breast Cancer Questionnaire was translated into Persian through forward-backward translation. Then, its content validity was assessed by twelve experts, and 400 women with breast cancer completed the questionnaire. The construct validity of the questionnaire was evaluated through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and its convergent and discriminant validity were evaluated using Fornell and Larcker’s approach. The reliability of the questionnaire was also evaluated through Cronbach’s alpha, McDonald’s omega, and composite reliability. Results: In exploratory factor analysis, five factors were extracted, namely vulnerability, body stigma, body-related shame, body satisfaction, and physical disability stigma. Confirmatory factor analysis also confirmed the fit of the five-factor model (χ2 = 466.95; N = 241; P < 0.001; PCFI = 0.728; PNFI = 0.624; CMIN/DF = 1.938; RMSEA = 0.068; AGFI = 0.808; IFI = 0.838). Second-order factor analysis also revealed that the subscales of the questionnaire measured an overarching concept which was labeled “Body image stigma”. The questionnaire had acceptable content and convergent validity and composite reliability. Conclusion: The Persian version of Body Image after Breast Cancer Questionnaire measures the broad concept of “Body image stigma”. The Persian BIBCQ has acceptable validity and reliability and hence, can be used for assessing body image among breast cancer survivors. AbstractNowadays, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses are two important consecutive steps in an overall analysis process. The overall analysis should start with an exploratory factor analysis that explores the data and establishes a hypothesis for the factor model in the population. Then, the analysis process should be continued with a confirmatory factor analysis to assess whether the hypothesis proposed in the exploratory step is plausible in the population. To carry out the analysis, researchers usually collect a single sample, and then split it into two halves. As no specific splitting methods have been proposed to date in the context of factor analysis, researchers use a random split approach. In this paper we propose a method to split samples into equivalent subsamples similar to one that has already been proposed in the context of multivariate regression analysis. The method was tested in simulation studies and in real datasets.
