The folding carton is a widely used packaging solution. Recent European Union packaging legislation has forced carton manufacturers to use lighter-weight grades of carton board. This typically results in a reduction in board stiffness, which can lead to decreased process efficacy or even prevent successful processing. In order to overcome this, end-users lower production rates and fine-tune packaging machine settings for each pack and material. This trial-and-error approach is necessary because the rules relating machine set-up to pack design and material properties are not generally well known. The present study addresses this fundamental issue through the creation of a finite-element computer simulation of carton processing. Mechanical testing was performed to ascertain the key mechanical properties of the carton walls and creases. The carton model was validated against the experimental results and was then subjected to the machine-material interactions that take place during complex packaging operations. The overall approach was validated and the simulation showed good agreement with the physical system. The results of the simulation can be used to determine guidelines relating machine set-up criteria to carton properties. This will improve responsiveness to change and will ultimately allow end-users to process thinner lighter-weight materials more effectively.

Abstract This paper presents an advisory conceptual design tool for mechanical transmission systems. Space consideration was taken into account during the design process. A prototype function tree was built in the form of knowledge-based system to transfer a designer’s idea into a set of mechanical components. An advisory expert system was also developed to help a designer in decision making. As an example, a packaging machine is designed using the developed system.

In the present research, the working conditions of workers employed in the production of medicines in the form of tablets and capsules of a modern enterprise of the pharmaceutical industry have been studied. Based on the results of attestation of workplaces and data of industrial laboratory control of the factors of the production environment for the period from 2016 to 2019, a complex of harmful production factors at workplaces was determined and a comprehensive hygienic assessment of the working conditions of a general purpose machine operator of chemical and pharmaceutical preparations, packaging machine operator, stacker-packer and processor of technological containers and tares. It has been established that the labor activity of the leading professional groups of workers in production is associated with the influence of a predominantly chemical factor due to the presence of harmful chemicals in the air of the working area. According to the data obtained, the air of the working area at the workplace of the operator of a wide profile of chemical and pharmaceutical preparations of the tableting and filling of capsules section is contaminated with harmful chemicals (doxycycline, nystatin, lincomycin, rifampicin, tetracycline, etc.), the concentrations of which exceed the maximum permissible. A hygienic assessment of the parameters of the microclimate, noise and tension of the labor process at the studied workplaces established that there are no deviations from hygienic standards and the working conditions according to these factors are permissible. Thus, the data obtained allow us to conclude that the working conditions of the operator of a wide profile of chemical and pharmaceutical preparations belong to class 3.3, the stacker-packer — 3.1, and the working conditions of the operator of filling and packaging machines and the processor of technological containers and tares are assessed as acceptable.

Objectives: This paper chose the front section of the assembly line of the explosive packaging machine as the design object, and studied the application of the interactive genetic model in the packaging machinery. Methods: Through the research on the product characteristics and the development trend of the packaging machinery, the main points of the design of the packaging machinery were summarized. The application models of two interactive genetic algorithms based on the compound fitness allocation strategy (HFAS) and the graded fitness allocation strategy were established in this paper. Results: The parameter setting of the compound fitness distribution strategy was analyzed, and the better scheme was selected for the case of the packaging machine design. Conclusion: In this paper, a specific case of the application of interactive genetic algorithm in the design of packaging machinery products—the design of the front section of the explosive packing machine was discussed. The total arrangement method and fuzzy evaluation method were used to evaluate the design results. Two methods were used to evaluate the design results.
