The work is devoted to the character and contextual levels analysis of A.N. Ostrovsky’s play “The Snow Maiden”. The Berendey country as the embodiment of the pagan world is not only a place for the major events development, but it also symbolizes a special era in Russian history: the contact of two mutually exclusive principles – monotheism and polytheism. Evidences of these principles are the gospel parallels presented by A.N. Ostrovsky through a love sense, which the in-habitants of the Berendey country interpret in a pagan, but not in the Orthodox aspect. Using syn-thesis and analogy, which are the leading research methods of this work, it is possible to prove the contextual closeness of Snow Maiden and Mizgir, characters, originally isolated from the society of the Berendey country, and also to identify the specifics of application of the grotesque, the main literary device used by A.N. Ostrovsky. It is proved that A.N. Ostrovsky’s play is close to V. Hugo’s novel “Notre Dame de Paris” as a work where the grotesque seriously determines the author’s intention. The idea of the play is also analyzed in the format of continuity, as evidenced by the parallelism between “The Snow Maiden” and “Thunderstorm” – in these works the characters sometimes have similar formulations, that is why typification concept analysis is seems acceptable, which allows to analyze the characters in the context of the theory of K.G. Jung’s archetypes. Therefore, the considered task of this work is searching for bringing together contextual beginnings and analysis of the play’s chronotope – system-forming aspects that allow us to characterize the work not only as an extravaganza, but also as a text that occupies a special place in the playwright’s creative heritage. This research will be of great interest to everyone who studies the work of A.N. Ostrovsky in the format of literary studies, as well to researchers of pagan and orthodox motives in Russian literature of the 19th century.

Myth creation is an integral element of human consciousness. All the images related to Petersburg, due to its unique role in the process of Russian modernization and forming cultural heritage, have been mythologized in the folk literature. Based on the folk literature of Petersburg and the special situation of Russian modernization and with the combination of historism and mythicism, Russian writers, with their unique mythological thinking and awareness, created the modern myths of Petersburg, that have the same images and consistent thinking. The modern myths of Petersburg in the 19th-century Russian literature are rooted in Russian history and social reality and truly reflect all kinds of conflicts in the development of modernization of the Russian society. The myths interpret the problems of modern civilization and unfold the unchanging factors in the empirical world and historical development.

Abstract. Many Muslims in the Riau Islands do not know the history of the development of Islamic theory from the center of power to spread to various corners. This is as the existence of the Great Mosque of Raja Haji Abdul Ghani (MBRHAG) on Buru Island, Karimun. Thus, to uncover the existence of this mosque, qualitative research methods are used so that history, architecture, and socio-religious functions can be known. Based on the results of the study it was concluded that the establishment of MBRHAG was initiated by Raja Haji Abdul Ghani. He was the first Amir (sub-district level government) of the kingdom of Riau-Lingga on Buru Island, in the 19th century. The architecture is a Chinese. Therefore, on the right side of this mosque is around 200 m, there is also the Sam Po Teng Temple and the Tri Dharma Dewa Bumi. Thus, the close location of the mosque with Chinese and Confucian worship houses's shows a harmonious relationship between Malay Muslims and Chinese Buddhists. In fact, in the continuation of this relationship there was information that a Chinese Buddhist had joined a Muslim friend to fast for half a month of Ramadan.Keywords: Mosque, Malay Muslims, Chinese Buddhists/Confucians, Harmonious RelationsAbstrak. Umat Islam di Kepulauan Riau banyak yang tidak mengenal sejarah perkembangan ajaran Islam dari pusat kekuasaan hingga tersebar ke berbagai pelosok. Hal ini sebagaimana keberadaan Masjid Besar Raja Haji Abdul Ghani (MBRHAG) di Pulau Buru, Karimun. Dengan demikian, untuk mengungkapkan keberadaan masjid ini digunakan metode penelitian kualitatif  agar dapat diketahui sejarah, arsitektur, dan fungsi sosial keagamaannya.  Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa pendirian MBRHAG diprakarsai oleh Raja Haji Abdul Ghani. Ia adalah Amir (pemerintah setingkat kecamatan) pertama kerajaan Riau-Lingga di Pulau Buru, pada abad ke-19. Adapun arsitekturnya adalah seorang Tionghoa. Karena itu, di sebelah kanan masjid ini sekitar 200 m juga terdapat Kelenteng Sam Po Teng dan cetya Tri Dharma Dewa Bumi. Dengan demikian, dekatnya lokasi masjid dengan rumah ibadah umat Tionghoa dan Khonghucu ini menunjukkan hubungan yang harmonis antara muslim Melayu dengan Budhis Tionghoa. Bahkan, dalam kelangsungan hubungan ini terdapat informasi seorang Buddhis Tionghoa pernah ikut temannya yang beragama muslim untuk berpuasa selama setengah bulan Ramadhan.Kata Kunci: Masjid, Muslim Melayu, Buddhis/Khonghucu Tionghoa, Hubungan Harmonis

The article explores the peculiarities of literary portraits and studies the interconnections and contrasts between painted and written portraits. The recognizability of a portrait in pictorial art is attained not only through physical resemblance but also through “artistic deformations” that the author introduces to the appearance of the portrayed. In a literary portrait, identification is achieved both by verbal and plastic detailing and by addressing the reader’s inner experience and imagination. Traditionally, the literary portrait in the Russian literature of the 19th century is based mostly on plastic characteristics, comparisons, and color accents, and because of this, it is often defined as “pictorial”. However, portraits by Pushkin and Dostoevsky stand out as exceptionally original, as if created from a different material. Pushkin avoids detailing, instead, he presents a “suggestive” portrait, i.e., a dynamic outline of the personality. The reader’s imagination is influenced not by details, but rather by the dynamic nature of Pushkin’s characters. Dostoevsky does not inherit Pushkin’s methods, though he also turns to a dynamic principle in describing the heroes of his novels. When they first appear, he presents them as if from different angles of vision, and their features may often be in discord, which makes the reader sense a contradictory impact of their personalities, as well as of their portraits. This kind of portrait is a dynamic message, where the reader follows the hero along unexpected and contrasting paths that the author previously mapped for him. From the beginning to the very end of their works, these two classics of Russian literature present the human personality as a being in a state of life-long development, always changing and always free in its existential choice.

We analyze the implementation specific of the Kore archetype, introduced by C.G. Jung and K. Kerenyi, in relation to the image of Katerina, the main heroine of the play “The storm” by A.N. Ostrovsky. The main focus is on the archetype of Katherine’s image. In the process of research, comparative typological, historical, biographical and interpretive methods are used. Due to the analysis of the works of V.V. Toporova, E.M. Meletinsky, N.A. Berdyaev, T. Eliot and others, Katerina’s involvement in the Kore archetype is revealed. We investigate the specific situation of Katerina’s life in the Kabanov family: dependence on circumstances forces the heroine to commit adultery in order to find female happiness. We prove that Katerina’s image created by A.N. Ostrovsky and actualizing the most pressing problems of the modern playwright of society, is typical for Russian literature of the Golden age in social and psychological terms. A detailed study of the main character’s image allows us to come to the conclusion that the illusory feeling and the subsequent doom to suffer reproduce the stable image of a Russian woman, ready for love, but receiving nothing in return. The results of this study may be interesting to everyone who is interested in the work of A.N. Ostrovsky and archetypes in Russian literature of the 19th century.

Emancipation and Gender Equality became a hot issue in the 20s. Women are judged to be entitled to the same rights as men in education, politics, economics, and others. Rohanna Kuddus, a woman from Koto Gadang, West Sumatra, dedicates her life to improving women of origin. In the 19th century, Minangkabau women were still underprivileged and marginalized. Rohana Kuddus believes that women must make a move to change their condition. Various movements were pioneered by Rohanna Kudus, ranging from gender struggle movements to politics. Rohana Kuddus: Gender and Socio-Political Movements uses research methods to collect interview sources, books, journals, and data from the internet that discusses Ruhana Kuddus. The limit of this paper is to look at the movements of Rohanna Kuddus in achieving gender equality and the various political movements that are running.

The article focuses on the reception of Russian classical literature translations in the English-speaking culture. The research was carried out on the material of three existing translations of ‘Forest and Steppe’ by both Russian and English translators published in 1895, 1955 and 1967. The main objective of the research is to determine the difficulties translators of Russian literature of the 19th century could face in the case of Turgenev's epigraph to ‘Forest and Steppe’. The tasks of the study were to define and describe the peculiarities of conveying the epigraph’s vocabulary, to outline the group of the most important keywords of the text, to recognize and describe discrepancies in their translation, to indicate why the chosen option is possible or impossible in the translation of Turgenev’s text. The study showed that Turgenev's worldview was formed under the influence of the culture of ‘rhetorical word’, and the epigraph to ‘Forest and Steppe’ proves it. The epigraph consists of a chain of symbolic images that add up to a single picture. The writer's worldview determined the style of the epigraph, the choice of vocabulary, and the composition of the text. For translators, the main difficulty at the lexical level lies in the fact that they often choose words that carry a greater emotional load than Turgenev’s vocabulary, and also introduce tropes, absent in the original, into translations. On the one hand, the translations create a realistic picture, in contrast to Turgenev’s symbolic landscape, on the other hand, the atmosphere of the text, reflecting the personality of the writer, is destroyed. The translations mirror profound changes that took place in the 19th–20th centuries in the European worldview.
