The article analyzes how professors and students of MGIMO-University’s School of International Relations perceive innovations in language teaching. As a synergy system, language teaching relies on selfdevelopment based to a great extent on innovations, which can be initiated either from the inside or from the outside. To identify the basic features of innovations in foreign language teaching, the authors conducted a survey of professors and students of the School of international Relations. The results suggest that for most respondents the main purpose of innovations in foreign language teaching and learning is to attain a significantly higher level of communicative competence, which is seen as feasible only if fundamentally new teaching materials and computer technologies are used. According to the survey, the success of innovations largely depends on their source (innovations ‘from the top’ and innovations ‘from the bottom’) and commitment on the part of professors and students to participate in them, the latter being often prompted by their discontent with the state of play. Innovations ‘from above’ tend to be more encompassing and affect the entire system of language education, whereas innovations ‘from the bottom concern the teaching process per se. Though the survey suggests that it is innovations ‘from the top’ that tend to be more successful, the authors conclude that language education as a synergy system adopts only non-shattering innovations that address its most vital needs, thus encouraging its sustainable development.

Building research skills for students of technical universities attracts the attention as an important component of the professional competence. One of the possible solutions is to use elements of research work in the process of foreign language teaching, since this academic discipline provides a variety of opportunities for acquiring these skills. Studying a foreign language contributes to the development of research skills, analytical skills and critical thinking. Teaching students how to work with a text, to extract information, to use compression skills (summarizing) and expanding information (commenting), using citation, compiling a bibliographic list will help them gain skills for writing articles. The ability to make a presentation, ask questions and prove their point of view will prepare students for a presentation at a scientific conference and participation in a scientific discussion. Use of computer technology at all stages of training (information retrieval, creation of a written text, preparation of a presentation) also contributes to the skills necessary for a contemporary specialist. Attracting students’ attention to research work in a foreign language contributes to the increase of motivation for scientific work, and to the further studies of a foreign language, which becomes a means of obtaining professional information and generalizing existing knowledge in scientific work. Reliance on previously obtained knowledge brings research skills development in the framework of “foreign language” programme to the fore for non-linguistic stu-dents. These conclusions can be useful for teachers and students of a technical university and can improve research work organization of future specialists.

This article deals with two of the four primary language skills – listening and reading. The author tries to show not only differences but also similarities between these two receptive language skills, as research has shown that they are very close to one another and have much in common, especially in terms of psychological aspects. The author draws readers’ attention to the fact that both processes – listening and reading – are connected with acquiring and understanding information, entail a critical and creative interpretation of a given text, have similar structure as well as require much concentration and ability to read between the lines, and, furthermore, to understand what is not said or written directly. It is suggested that an integrated approach should be incorporated into the foreign language teaching process, as there are clear similarities between the two aforementioned language skills, especially in the psychological dimension.
