The research on the use of active captioning or subtitling in foreign language learning has considerably increased in the course of the last decade, although there is still lack of evidence as regards the potential advantages of intralingual captioning in this context. The present project attempts to fill this void by analysing the didactic use of intralingual subtitling in a distance learning environment both in terms of written production and vocabulary acquisition. To this end, a total number of 41 undergraduate English B1 students have been working on 10 sequenced subtitling activities using short pre-selected videos taken from an American sitcom in the course of a month and a half. Peer-to-peer assessment has also been fostered during the project through active use of online forums. The conclusions confirm the expected benefits as far as writing and vocabulary skills enhancement is concerned and provide further insights into how to best implement this practice.

Interteaching is a pedagogical technique designed to increase student engagement and facilitate peer-to-peer learning. Studies of interteaching have largely supported the efficacy of this approach with regard to academic performance and student satisfaction. In this chapter, the literature evaluating the effectiveness of interteaching is reviewed, and a study of the incorporation of interteaching into an associate-level course within the author's institution is described. Outcomes of the interteaching course are compared with those from the same course in a previous quarter utilizing more traditional teaching methods. The chapter concludes with practical suggestions for the application of interteaching within the classroom and in distance learning. Recommendations for the incorporation of digital teaching and learning applications to augment this pedagogical style are also provided.

Social tendency to distance various forms of social interaction, including learning, is intensifying in the times of highly developed information and communication technologies. Online communication of teachers and students — in chats, online forums and conferences — becmes an alternative to traditional learning. During the quarantine related to the COVID-19 pandemic, distance learning (DL) was introduced in higher education institutions of Ukraine. The aim of the present study is to reveal the characteristics of students’ motivation for distance learning within the pandemic. Following methods were used for this purpose: the author’s questionnaire «Attitude to Distance Learning in Higher Education»; the method of «Eductional Motviation in Higher Education» by T. I. Ilyina, «Method of Diagnosing Personality for Motivation to Avoid failure» (by T. Ehlers), «Method of Diagnosing Personality for Motivation to Succeed» (by T. Ehlers). The empirical study continued throughout July-August 2020. The survey of students’ attitudes to DL showed three types of such attitudes: 48 % are positive about distance learning, 30 % are neutral, and 22 % are negative. Diagnosis of motivation to get higher education in students with different attitudes to distance learning revealed following trends: the highest rate of motivation to acquire knowledge is observed in students with a positive attitude to DL; the motive for obtaining a diploma dominates among students with a negative attitude to DL. High levels of motivation to succeed do not depend on the type of attitude to DL. The dominance of high levels of motivation to succeed compared to low levels of motivation to avoid failure is inherent in students with a positive attitude to DL. Significant differences were found between the parameters of «motivation to succeed» and «motivation to avoid failure» (p> 0.05) among students with a neutral attitude to distance learning. Thus, based on our empirical observation, we noted the correlation between the type of attitude of students to DL and their motivation to avoid failure, and the lack of such correlation between the type of attitude of students to DL and their motivation to succeed.

The article is devoted to the problem of distance learning in the field of graphic design. In this regard, special attention is paid to such a branch of pedagogy as didactics. One of the aspects of distance learning didactics considered in the article is the methods of conducting practical classes in graphic design. The use of technologies and methods of team production in the development of the project are considered.

Graphic design, as a specific research discipline, has been largely underrepresented in academia, with the literature suggesting this is partially due to difficulties in researching its professional practitioners. Acknowledging such hurdles, this article discusses an experimental study that used dramaturgy as a defamiliarising method for uncovering professional graphic designers’ perceptions of stakeholders. The study collected graphic designer narratives from online forums as well as dramaturgically informed interviews with professional practitioners. The graphic designers’ narratives were converted into a script and used to motivate a troupe of trained actors, who re-performed the narratives during a series of performance workshops. The article argues that this use of trained actors as ‘proxy designers’ created a refractive form of defamiliarisation, allowing previously obfuscated narratives about graphic designers’ perceptions of stakeholders to emerge. Presenting the study as a prototype to inform future research into graphic design and other elusive creative practices, the article also cautions that the amount of defamiliarisation used must be evaluated against the desired outcomes.

Technology advancement has revolutionized the education environment, resulting in Online Distance Learning (ODL) being introduced at the tertiary level to meet the demands of various groups of individuals. While the academic environment embraces technology advancement and ODL, the world was hit with the devastating Covid-19 pandemic, putting the whole world at freeze and greater challenges. This created further challenges towards the ODL implementation, especially in the fields requiring hands-on practical lab and studio practices such as art and design. Despite the technology advancement and flexible platform, the Teaching and Learning process faces unprecedented challenges which required investigation towards its implementation and effectiveness. This article discusses the implementation of Online Distance Learning (ODL) in the teaching and learning (T&L) process of the Graphic Design Field in Malaysian Tertiary Institution. The result from the finding identified what were the challenges and can be used to further improve the implementation of ODL in the related field of study in the future.
