Palavras-chave:Fotografia; Alair Gomes; Roberto Burle-Marx; Aloisio Magalhes; Quentin FioreAbstractAlair Gomes was part of a predominantly carioca scientific community, but maintained several international contacts linked to university research. As this text presents, a similar situation took place at the artistic level, influencing his photographic production. Understanding the place Alair Gomes occupied in the cultural scene in Rio de Janeiro from the 1960s onwards seems to require the reconstruction of possible partnerships between the photographer and other actors of that period. We will analyze three episodes that enabled Alair Gomes to establish professional collaborations and photographic projects: photographing the property of landscape artist Burle Marx; establishing a dialogue with the designer Aloisio Magalhes; and participating in the publication of a book bythe North American graphic designer Quentin Fiore. The analysis of these episodes introduces and brings together scattered cases that so far could be followed up with greater attention and research rigor. We discuss the construction of Alair Gomes? artistic context, which, as proposed, cannot be disregarded in the evaluation of his photographic works. Keywords:Photography; Alair Gomes; Roberto Burle-Marx; Aloisio Magalhes; Quentin Fiore

At the same time, the analytical approach is supported by highlighting the role of color in the process of amplifying expressions and messages generated by satirical works created by the graphic artist.

Ismar David was a prolific calligrapher, type designer, graphic designer, and illustrator who also engaged in architectural design and taught calligraphy. He studied applied arts in Berlin, emigrating to Jerusalem in 1932 and to New York in 1952. From the 1930s to the 1990s, he created a wealth of unique designs, most importantly the David Hebrew typeface family. It was the first comprehensive Hebrew typeface family, comprising nine styles that include a true Hebrew italic style and a monolinear style, equivalent to a Latin sans serif. David Hebrew provides an example of how a research-based design process can help negotiate the tension between old and new, leading to an innovative, well-informed design solution. David not only excelled in his groundbreaking approach to Hebrew type design for existing glyphs, but he went a step further, expanding the character set. After David completed the design of his typeface family in 1954, it was partially cast for machine composition by the Intertype Corporation. During that period, David relocated to New York to pursue his creative career.

This paper examines the implications of the implementation of a policy that promotes open teaching in an emerging open university. It describes the benefits and risks associated with such implementation within the context of Mauritius. It emphasises the adoption of cMOOCs which is more student-generated MOOCs that encourages student engagement based on socio-constructivism and heutagogy, instead of behaviourism and cognitivism. The use of open teaching promotes the democratisation of higher education and may help open universities to achieve economies of scale, and therefore making open universities profitable. However, open teaching through the adoption of cMOOCs may lack sustainability due to the political bearing of the open university concerning its governing bodies and the nomination of its head at the management level, the lack of electracy of a large number of contingent teaching staff as well as the lack of safeguard for the intellectual copyrights of MOOCs in Mauritius. It is recommended that open universities should invest massively in technology-enhanced content delivery and in the appointment of a graphic designer to support user-content generation.

Article visualizations:
