Abstract In this work, a photocatalytic nanocomposite, Fe-doped ZnO/nanocellulose, was synthesized using an in-situ method and examined for methylene blue (MB) degradation. For this purpose, pure ZnO (PZ) was synthesized by the chemical precipitation method and then subjected to Fe+3 doping with different concentrations of Fe3+ (1, 3, and 5 mol%). The PZ and Fe-doped ZnO (FZ) samples were characterized using several standard analyses. UV-vis DRS analysis was also used to investigate the effect of Fe3+ doping on the bandgap of PZ. The doping of Fe3+ enhanced the photocatalytic activity of ZnO under visible light. The degradation efficiency of FZ samples (> 50%) was enhanced compared to the pristine ZnO (36.91%) during the same period. The catalyst with the highest degradation efficiency (94.21%) was then conjugated with broom corn stalk-derived nanocellulose (NC) at varying NC/ Zn2+ molar ratios (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) and characterized by various analyses. The NC enhanced the hydroxyl group at the surface of the nanocomposite, consequently improved the photocatalytic performance of the synthesized samples. The ability of the optimized photocatalyst for MB degradation was assessed. The effect of operating parameters such as pH, catalyst dosage, and initial MB concentration was investigated and degradation efficiency of 98.84% was achieved at the optimum condition. Besides, photocatalyst regeneration study indicated the great photocatalytic performance of this nanocomposite with no loss in its degradation efficiency. The facile synthesis and fast degradation rate of this nanocomposite make it a promising candidate for real-world wastewater treatment.

A visible-light responsive CdS/ZnO nanocomposite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by precipitation of CdS nanoparticles, using Cd (NO3)2 and Na2S as starting materials, on ZnO nanoparticles and then calcined at 400°C for 2 hours. The effects of the mole ratio of CdS and ZnO in the composites on their phase, morphology, and surface area were investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer Emmett Teller method (BET), respectively. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue solution in the presence of composite products under visible-light irradiation was investigated. The results showed that the mole ratio of CdS and ZnO played a significant role on photocatalytic performance. The highest photocatalytic activity was obtained from the CdS/ZnO nanocomposite with mole ratio of 1:4, which is higher than that of pure CdS and pure ZnO.

Novel non-porous Ag3PO4/AlPO4 composites with a stick shape were synthesized using the homogeneous precipitation method and characterized by XRD, FESEM, XPS, UV-vis spectroscopy and BET method. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated by degradation of MB and MO upon irradiation with visible light. Results indicate that when the molar ratios of Ag3PO4 to AlPO4 are 6:4 or higher, remarkable increases in photocatalytic activity were observed compared with the pure Ag3PO4 powder. The possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of dyes by Ag3PO4/AlPO4 composites was proposed.

In this work, the photocatalytic performance of Ag3PO4, Nb2O5 and Ag3PO4/Nb2O5 hybrid photocatalysts to degrade methyl orange dye, MO, in an aqueous solution under visible light irradiation was evaluated. The Ag3PO4 and Ag3PO4/Nb2O5 photocatalysts, with various Ag to Nb molar ratios, were prepared using a facile precipitation method. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV–Visible, X-ray Photoelectron, and Photoluminescence spectroscopies. Upon the addition of Ag3PO4, the band gap energy of Nb2O5 decreased from 3.0 eV to 2.7 eV, indicating the possible use of the Ag3PO4/Nb2O5 hybrid photocatalysts under visible light irradiation. All of the prepared Ag3PO4/Nb2O5 catalysts exhibited higher photocatalytic performance than Ag3PO4 in degrading methyl orange dye under 23-watt visible light irradiation. The Ag3PO4/Nb2O5 catalyst, with a mole ratio of 2:1, exhibited the fastest MO degradation rate of 7.3 × 10−2 min−1, which is twice faster than that of Ag3PO4. The catalyst also shows better stability, as it is reusable for up to six experimental cycles while maintaining its photocatalytic activity above 60%.

Pure TiO2 nanoparticles and ones doped with Fe and/or Ni were successfully prepared by a co-precipitation method from ilmenite. The samples were structurally characterized by XRD, XPS, FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, EDX, AAS and BET measurement. The XRD results showed that all samples were anatase TiO2, and no characteristic peaks of dopants were observed. The crystallite sizes of all doped TiO2 nanoparticles were less than 20 nm and doping TiO2 with metal ions can suppress the crystal growth of the particles. The XRD and XPS results indicated that TiO2 was uniformly doped and its crystalline phase was not changed by doping. The specific surface area of Fe–Ni/TiO2 is bigger than that of the un-doped TiO2. The pore size and pore volume of Fe–Ni/TiO2 is smaller than that of the un-doped. UV-vis spectra of the samples showed that the absorption edge red shifted with increasing doped metal content. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated in oxidative degradation of methylene blue (MB) with H2O2 under visible light irradiation. When doped with a single type of transition metal, the photocatalytic performance of Ni-doped samples was lower than that of Fe-doped ones. For the co-doped catalysts, the catalytic efficiency of 0.5%Fe4%Ni/TiO2 was the highest, reaching 93.34% after 250 min. Metal doping enhanced the photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue compared with that of pure TiO2 by up to 1.5 times. The synergistic effects of the two metal ions improved the photocatalytic performance. The particles exhibited pronounced activity in degradation of MB as well as efficient recyclability. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism of methylene blue was analyzed.

In this work, a simple chemical precipitation method was employed to prepare spherical-like Ag3PO4 material (IL-Ag3PO4) with exposed {111} facet in the presence of reactive ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole dihydrogen phosphate ([Omim]H2PO4). The crystal structure, microstructure, optical properties, and visible-light photocatalytic performance of as-prepared materials were studied in detail. The addition of ionic liquids played a crucial role in forming spherical-like morphology of IL-Ag3PO4 sample. Compared with traditional Ag3PO4 material, the intensity ratio of {222}/{200} facets in XRD pattern of IL-Ag3PO4 was significantly enhanced, indicating the main {111} facets exposed on the surface of IL-Ag3PO4 sample. The presence of exposed {111} facet was advantageous for facilitating the charge carrier transfer and separation. The light-harvesting capacity of IL-Ag3PO4 was larger than that of Ag3PO4. The photocatalytic activity of samples was evaluated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) and p-chlorophenol (4-CP) under visible light. The photodegradation efficiencies of IL-Ag3PO4 were 1.94 and 2.45 times higher than that of Ag3PO4 for RhB and 4-CP removal, respectively, attributing to a synergy from the exposed {111} facet and enhanced photoabsorption. Based on active species capturing experiments, holes (h+), and superoxide radical (•O2−) were the main active species for visible-light-driven RhB photodegradation. This study will provide a promising prospect for designing and synthesizing ionic liquid-assisted photocatalysts with a high efficiency.
