Abstract Background Active biomolecules extracted from plant biodiversity appear to offer an alternative to the frequently toxic chemotherapy methods used to treat cancer. The micronutrients obtained from certain fruits, including pink guava Psidium guajava L., appear to have this property. We therefore focused on three biomolecules of interest: lycopene and apigenin, the main components in pink guava, and resveratrol, a reference biomolecule with recognized beneficial effects. Our aim was to assess and compare the activities of these micronutrients, first separately and then in combination, on LNCaP cells (prostate cancer) and UACC cells (melanoma). Methods MTT assays and confocal microscopy using anti-PCNA and anti-5-α-reductase antibodies enabled us to establish a ranking for these micronutrients for the first time, when they were studied separately to begin with, in terms of their anti-proliferative action. Results Apigenin was found to be the most active biomolecule in this respect, followed by lycopene and then resveratrol. In a subsequent study of the combined actions of these molecules, specifically “lycopene-apigenin” and “lycopene-resveratrol”, we found that the “lycopene-apigenin” combination has a stronger anti-cancer activity than the biomolecules used separately, and it is also superior to the “lycopene-resveratrol” combination. Conclusions Our study demonstrated the synergistic modes of action of lycopene and apigenin in the guava fruit and the importance of the combination of these two micronutrients in pink guava in order to obtain a high anti-cancer activity.

Abstract. We report for the first time the presence of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in the state of Acre, Brazil, reared from guava fruit (Psidium guajava L.) and star fruit (Averrhoacarambola L.). This finding increases our knowledge about the geographical records of this fruit fly in the Brazilian Amazon.Primeiro registro de Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) no estado do Acre, BrasilResumo. The guava fruit (Psidium guajava) is among the most strongly affected by fruit flies in Brazil. In the Brazilian Amazon, 11 species of Anastrepha have been reported in guava orchards to date. This work aimed to identify the species of Anastrepha present in a guava orchard in the municipality of Boa Vista, determine the species infesting the fruits, and identify any parasitoids present. Two McPhail traps with food bait were installed and weekly collections were made between January and December 2008. Fruits were also collected systematically during this period, with a view to determining the association between host plant and tephritid species. Nine species of Anastrepha were identified, in addition to one specimen belonging to a probable new species. Anastrepha striata Schiner, Anastrepha sororcula Zucchi, Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart), and Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) were the dominant species in the orchard, accounting for 84.8% of all captured individuals. All females collected directly from fruits were A. striata. Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti) was the only parasitoid species obtained. In this work, Anastrepha ethalea (Walker) is reported for the first time in the state of Roraima.

Trans-resveratrol is a phytoalexin from the stilbene class, polyphenolic compound from non-flavonoid group. In vitro and animal studies have shown that trans-resveratrol may exert a wide range of potential beneficial effects to human health, which involves antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anti-diabetic and anti-cancer activity. The objective of this paper was to summarize available data concerning the most important clinical trials focused on resveratrol biological effects. The results of clinical trials indicate that resveratrol has potential cardioprotective activity in patients with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. It can also have positive effect on the circulatory function and exert anti-diabetic activity in humans, while the anti-cancer activity is still insufficiently tested. Some issues remain unsolved, such as the dose and length of treatment that would maximize the potential of resveratrol. It is expected that future, better designed and more extensive clinical trials will provide additional information related to this topic.

Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a lovely tropical and subtropical fruit that originates in Mexico, Central America, and then taken to other distant and near parts around the world. In Sudan this popular fruit is produced in orchards and household and is so profitable but yet attacked by a lot of fruit fly species of the Genera Ceratitis and Bactrocera and the result is a loss of more than 70%. This research aimed at evaluating the effect of Gum Arabic coating (GAC) in extending the shelf life of guava fruit and disinfesting it from these notorious pests. Guava fruits from Kadaro orchards, Khartoum North, were tested using seven concentrations of Gum Arabic solutions. The results reflect that 1: 4 (25%) and 1: 8 (12.5%) (GA: water) concentrations attained 56 and 40% disinfestation, respectively whereas the other lower concentrations effected corresponding results in a range from 20 – 08%. The reduction in maggots per test fruit reached upto 188% as compared to the control.  The highest concentrations (1: 4 & 1: 8) effected a sustainability of 52% in fruit firmness (FF) with an average of medium (3) FF compared to soft FF (4) in the control. The corresponding results in other lower concentrations (1: 16; 1: 32; 1: 64; 1: 72 & 1: 96) were 36, 24, 24, 20 and 16%, respectively. In addition to an average FF of 4 (soft) for all these concentrations and 5 (very soft) for all the corresponding controls. Nevertheless, the sustainability of fruit color (FC) effected by the test concentrations was 52, 44, 24, 22, 24, 20, and 24%, respectively. Regarding these results, the two highest test concentrations effected a sizeable disinfestation and control of fruit flies and a good extension of shelf life of guava in Khartoum State. These findings support using this treatment as an effective IPM tool to extend guava fruit shelf life and upgrading its postharvest quality.

Nowadays, cancer treatment has been a big challenge to healthcare systems. Most of clinical anti-cancer therapies are toxic and cause adverse effects to human body. Therefore, current trend in science is seeking and screening of natural compounds which possess antineoplastic activities to utilize in treatment. Uvaria L. - Annonaceae includes approximately 175 species spreading over tropical areas of Asia, Australia, Africa and America. Studies on chemical compositions and pharmacological effects of Uvaria showed that several compound classes in this genus such as alkaloid, flavonoid, cyclohexen derivaties, acetogenin, steroid, terpenoid, etc. indicate considerable biological activities, for example anti-tumor, anti-cancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, etc. Specifically, anti-cancer activity of fractions of extract and pure isolated compounds stands out for cytotoxicity against many cancer cell lines. This study provides an overview of anti-cancer activity of Uvaria and suggests a potential for further studies on seeking and developing novel anti-cancer compounds. Key words: Anti-cancer, Uvaria.

: Melanoma is the most life-threatening and aggressive class of skin malignancies. The incidence of melanoma has steadily increased. Metastatic melanoma is greatly resistant to standard anti-melanomatreatments such as chemotherapy, and 5-year survival rate of cases with melanoma who have metastatic form of disease is less than 10%. The contributing role of apoptosis, angiogenesis and autophagy in the pathophysiology of melanoma has been previously demonstrated. Thus, it is extremely urgent to search for complementary therapeutic approachesthat couldenhance the quality of life of subjects and reduce treatment resistance and adverse effects. Resveratrol, known as a polyphenol component present in grapes and some plants, has anti-cancer properties due to its function as an apoptosis inducer in tumor cells, and anti-angiogenic agent to prevent metastasis. However, more clinical trials should be conducted to prove resveratrol efficacy. : Herein, for first time, we summarize current knowledge of anti-cancerous activities of resveratrol in melanoma.
