This paper presents development of a prototype sensorless dual axis solar tracker for maximum extraction of solar energy. To prove the concept and evaluate the proposed algorithm, a low cost widely availabe materials were used which was programmed based on Arduino microcontroller. The porposed algorithm works based on two search methods namely the global search that approximates the best point location in a region, and local search that further determines the actual sun’s position. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm gives better performance compared to the existing sun position algorithm (SPA) - based method as well as the fixed panel system. In terms of total output power, the proposed algorithm gives 17.96% more efficient than the fixed system and 6.38% better than the SPA-based system. Furthermore, the percentage error of the experimental measured angle to the actual sun azimuth angle was relatively minimal (less than 3%) during clear day operation. The system was proven to be effective in tracking the sun for improved energy production of solar PV panels and the proposed algorithm also can be used for designing the tracker with larger size of solar PV systems.

This paper presents the design and execution of a solar tracker system devoted to photovoltaic (PV) conversion panels. The proposed single-axis solar tracker is shifted automatically based on the sunlight detector or tracking sensor. This system also removes incident sunlight overlapping from sensors that are inside the sunlight tracking system. The Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) is used as a sensor to sense the intensity of light accurately. The sensors are placed at a certain distance from each other in the tracker system to avoid sunlight overlapping for maximum power production. The total system is designed by using a microcontroller (PIC16F877A) as a brain to control the whole system. The solar panel converts sunlight into electricity. The PV panel is fixed with a vertical axis of the tracker. This microcontroller will compare the data and rotate a solar panel via a stepper motor in the right direction to collect maximum photon energy from sunlight. From the experimental results, it can be determined that the automatic (PV solar tracker) sun tracking system is 72.45% more efficient than fixed panels, where the output power of the fixed panel and automatically adjusted panel are 8.289 watts and 14.287 watts, respectively.

The article deals with the optimization of the azimuthal tracking mechanism for a photovoltaic (PV) platform, which uses linear actuators as actuation elements for both movements (diurnal and elevation). In the case of diurnal movement, where the platform’s angular field of orientation is large, a mechanism with a relatively simple structure is used for amplifying the actuator’s stroke and avoiding the risk of the system locking itself (by limiting the values of the transmission angle). The optimization study targets the mechanical device, the control device, and the bi-axial tracking program (embodied by the laws of motion in time for the platform’s diurnal and elevation angles) with the purpose of obtaining a high input of solar radiation, with a minimal energy consumption to achieve tracking. The study is carried out by using a virtual prototyping platform, which includes Computer Aided Design (CAD), Multi-Body Systems (MBS), and Design for Control (DFC) computer applications. The mechanical and control devices of the solar tracker are integrated and tested in mechatronic concept. The simulations’ results, which were performed for a set of representative days throughout the year, prove the effectiveness of the proposed design.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is an important viral and/or bacterial disease that mainly affects feedlot calves. The involvement of Mycoplasma bovis in BRD can lead to chronic pneumonia poorly responsive to antimicrobial treatment. Caseonecrotic bronchopneumonia is a pulmonary lesion typically associated with M. bovis. In Spain, M. bovis is widely distributed in the feedlots and circulating isolates are resistant to most antimicrobials in vitro. However, the role of this species in clinical respiratory disease of feedlot calves remains unknown. Furthermore, available data are relative to a fixed panel of antimicrobials commonly used to treat BRD, but not to the specific set of antimicrobials that have been used for treating each animal. This study examined 23 feedlot calves raised in southeast Spain (2016–2019) with clinical signs of respiratory disease unresponsive to treatment. The presence of M. bovis was investigated through bacteriology (culture and subsequent PCR), histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The pathogen was found in 86.9% (20/23) of the calves, mainly in the lungs (78.26%; 18/23). Immunohistochemistry revealed M. bovis antigens in 73.9% (17/23) of the calves in which caseonecrotic bronchopneumonia was the most frequent lesion (16/17). Minimum inhibitory concentration assays confirmed the resistance of a selection of 12 isolates to most of the antimicrobials specifically used for treating the animals in vivo. These results stress the importance of M. bovis in the BRD affecting feedlot calves in Spain.

In this article, we have designed and fabricated the gamma-type Stirling engine based on the compression ratio technique. This engine is attached on a parabolic dish of a solar collector. The engine shows a good performance in terms of compression ratio, external work, total pressure, and engine’s speed. Our engine offers the thermal efficiency of 30.59 % so that it can reach the output mechanical power of 0.934. The temperature difference of 137 K can maintain very well for the heat collection of the solar collector even when the weather conditions are poor. Furthermore, our materials are environmentally friendly and this design is expected to be in the applications of the solar tracker in the future.
