The effect of long-term regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) strategies on bioactive compounds and enzymes at harvest, during cold storage [0 °C, 90% to 95% relative humidity (RH)] and after a simulated retail sale period (15 °C, 70% to 75% RH) of extra-early nectarine ‘VioWhite 5’ [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] was evaluated for 3 consecutive years. RDI strategies were scheduled as follows: 1) control [irrigated at 110% of maximum crop evapotranspiration (ETc) during the whole season], 2) RDI1 (irrigated at 110% ETc during critical periods of growth and at 85% of control during the rest of the growing season), and 3) RDI2 (irrigated at 110% ETc during critical periods of growth and at 80% and 60% control during the second fruit growth stage in March and late postharvest, respectively). Results suggested the existence of water stress when RDI was applied on extra-early nectarine. The RDI effect induced a change on the activity of enzymes studied that depended on the intensity and duration of water stress. RDI fruit, especially RDI2, presented higher catalase (CAT), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) enzyme activity and, together with dehydroascorbic acid level, appeared as indicators of this abiotic stress. RDI nectarine fruit increased total phenolic and flavonoids contents improving the nutraceutical quality of the product. With storage, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) increased its activity through the reduction of flavonoids, particularly in pulp. In this study, RDI2 achieved the highest initial and stored antioxidant capacity values. Peel compared with pulp was the main tissue where bioactive compounds were found in ‘VioWhite 5’ nectarine fruit and the only tissue with anthocyanin content in this white pulp nectarine. The significant water savings were of 780 and 2050 m3·ha−1 per year for RDI1 and RDI2, respectively. RDI can be used as a field practice to enhance bioactive compounds on extra-early nectarine fruit and to contribute to reduce water demand.

[email protected]     1 ABSTRACT   Deficit irrigation is used to control grapevine vegetative vigor and the grape composition can be influenced by soil water content. The minerals contained in the grapes are responsible for the physicochemical properties and stability of the wine. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of irrigation strategies on the properties of ‘Syrah’ wines produced in São Francisco Valley, Brazil. The irrigation treatments used were FI (full irrigation), RDI (regulated deficit irrigation), and DI (deficit irrigation). Winemaking was performed by traditional methods, followed by stabilization and bottling. Density, alcohol content, pH, total and volatile acidity, total and free sulfur dioxide, total polyphenols index, color intensity, and total anthocyanin content were determined, as well as the contents of Ca, Mg, P, K, Na, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb. The properties of wines were influenced by irrigation strategies, except for the content of total anthocyanin, Mg, P, Na, Cu, and Mn. The contents of Cd, Cr, Fe, and Zn were similar in the vines. The wines demonstrated varied properties with different typicalities. Irrigation strategies can be recommended for different products, FI for young and cheap, and DI and RDI for aged and more expensive wines.   Keywords: Vitis vinifera L., grape, water availability, tropical wine.     OLIVEIRA, V. Os minerais presentes nas uvas são responsáveis pelas propriedades físico-químicas e pela estabilidade do vinho. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de estratégias de irrigação sobre as propriedades do vinho ‘Syrah’ produzido no Vale do São Francisco, Brasil. As estratégias de irrigação utilizadas foram IP (irrigação plena), IDC (irrigação com déficit controlado) e ID (irrigação com déficit). A elaboração de vinhos foi realizada por métodos tradicionais, seguido de estabilização e engarrafamento. A densidade, teor de álcool, pH, acidez total e volátil, dióxido de total e livre de enxofre, o índice total de polifenóis, a intensidade da cor, conteúdo total de antocianina e concentrações de Ca, Mg, P, K, Na, Mn, Fe, Cu e Zn, Cd, Cr, Ni e Pb foram determinadas. As propriedades dos vinhos foram influenciadas pelas estratégias de irrigação, exceto os teores totais de antocianinas, e de Mg, P, Na, Cu e Mn. Os níveis de Cd, Cr, Fe e Zn foram semelhantes nos vinhos. Os vinhos demonstraram propriedades variadas com diferentes tipicidades. As estratégias de irrigação podem ser recomendadas para a obtenção de diferentes produtos, sendo a IP para vinhos jovens e baratos, e o ID e IDC para vinhos envelhecidos e mais caros.   Palavras chave: Vitis vinifera L., uva, disponibilidade de água, vinho tropical.

The influence of full irrigation, double-regulated (RDI) and sustained deficit irrigation (SDI) treatments on almond quality was assessed by analyzing different parameters: sugars, organic acids, antioxidant activity, total phenolic content (TPC), and volatile compounds. Almond quality studies for plants submitted to water stress are scarce, and it is essential to understand the biochemical responses of plants to water stress in maintaining fruit yield and quality. Citric acid, sucrose, antioxidant activity, and TPC were not affected by the application of studied deficit irrigation strategies (DI). An increase in malic acid and a decrease in glucose was observed for stressed samples (T3 and T4), while a higher number of total volatiles compounds was found for moderate RDI (T2). Using deficit irrigation strategies, the almond yield and quality was not changed, and in fact, some parameters, such as glucose and key volatile compounds, slightly increased under moderate RDI. This finding might encourage farmers to implement these strategies and contribute to sustainable agriculture.

Individual and interactive effects of restricted root volume (RRV) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) on vegetative growth and mineral nutrition of peach trees [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch (Peach Group) `Golden Queen'] were studied over 3 years (1992-95). Trees were grown in lysimeters of five different volumes (0.025, 0.06, 0.15, 0.4, and 1.0 m3) with either full or deficit (RDI) irrigation. Increasing soil volume increased vegetative growth as measured by trunk cross-sectional area (TCA) (linear and quadratic, P < 0.011) and tree weight (linear, P < 0.001) with the final TCA ranging from 29.0 to 51.0 cm2 and tree weight ranging from 7.2 to 12.1 kg for the smallest to largest volumes. Root density measured at the completion of the experiment decreased with increasing soil volume (linear and quadratic, P < 0.001) with root length density declining from 24.0 to 2.0 cm·cm-3. RDI reduced vegetative growth by up to 70% as measured by weight of summer prunings. Root restriction was effective in controlling vegetative vigor and is a viable alternative for control of vegetative growth. Mineral nutrition did not limit tree growth.

Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) involves inducing water stress during specific fruit growth phases by irrigating at less than full evapotranspiration. The objectives of this research were to study the effects of RDI perfomed at stage II of fruit growth and postharvest, on productivity of clingstone peaches, fruit quality as well as photosynthetic rate and midday leaf water potential. The research was conducted in a commercial clingstone peach (Prunus persica L. Batch cv. A-37) orchard in Greece. Trees were irrigated by means of microsprinklers and their frequency was determined using local meteorological station data and the FAO 56 Pennman-Monteith method. Photosynthetic rate was measured by a portable infrared gas analyzer. Midday leaf water potential was measured by the pressure chamber technique. During the years 2005 and 2006, the treatment RDII with irrigation applied at growth stage II of the peach tree did not affect productivity, fresh and dry mass of fruits. RDII reduced preharvest fruit drop in comparison to the control. RDII as well as the combined treatment RDII plus RDIP with irrigation applied at postharvest, at both years reduced shoot length of the vigorous shoots inside the canopy. RDII in comparison to the control increased the soluble solids content of the fruits and the ratio soluble solids/acidity. However it did not affect fruit acidity and fruit firmness. RDII as well as RDII plus RDIP in 2006 increased 'double' fruits and fruits with open cavity in comparison to the control and RDIP. Water savings were considerable and associated with the climatic conditions of each year.
