The management of municipal solid waste sector is crucial for a sustainable circular economy. Waste utilities are expected to provide high quality solid waste services at an affordable price. The efficient management of solid waste requires its assessment from an economic and environmental perspective, i.e., eco-efficiency assessment. Although the reduction of unsorted waste incurs an economic cost, its positive externalities are huge for the well-being of society, the environment, and people. Our study quantifies the marginal cost of reducing any unsorted waste using stochastic frontier analysis techniques which allow us to estimate the eco-efficiency of the waste sector. Our empirical approach focuses on the municipal solid waste collection and recycling services provided by several waste utilities in Chile. The results indicate that substantial eco-inefficiency in the sector exists, since the average eco-efficiency score is roughly 0.5 which means that the municipalities could approximately halve their operational costs and unsorted waste to produce the same level of output. The average marginal cost of reducing unsorted waste is 32.28 Chilean pesos per ton, although notable differences are revealed among the waste utilities evaluated. The results provided by this study are of great interest to stakeholders to promote sustainable management solutions and resource efficient solid waste services.

Solid waste composting has never been practised on a full scale in Jordan. However, the National Solid Waste Management Strategy recommended five major composting facilities to be put into operation starting from 2025. According to the Ministry of Environment, the waste sector is contributing to 10.6% of the total greenhouse gas emissions of the country. The main objective of this study was to assess the potential of solid waste composting in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in Jordan. Applying the upstream-operating-downstream account framework and developing a model that estimates the greenhouse gas emissions, it was possible to estimate the emissions associated with composting of source-segregated bio-waste, which was compared with three other scenarios, including business as usual (dumping and landfilling), sanitary landfilling, and anaerobic digestion. The assessment revealed that composting and anaerobic digestion of the total generated source-segregated bio-waste (Scenarios 3 and 4) have the least net greenhouse gas emissions with 1.1 million Mg CO2-eq y-1, while engineered sanitary landfilling and dumping have net emissions of 2.6 and 3.75 million Mg CO2-eq y-1, respectively. The findings of this research are paving the way to make informed and responsible decisions in the Jordanian solid waste sector to adopt sustainable and integrated management options.

This study analyzes the level and status of greenhouse gas emissions or removals from solid waste management activities in Marabahan Subdistrict, Formulates an action plan for solid waste management that is low in Greenhouse Gas emissions in Marabahan Subdistrict and Projects the level and status of emissions or Greenhouse Gas absorption from waste management solid in Marabahan District until 2030, according to the 2006 IPCC BAU scenario and mitigation actions. The waste sector greenhouse gas emissions inventory results in 2016 reached 5.16 Gg CO2-eq. However, due to improvements in domestic waste management, the 2016 greenhouse gas emissions rate was reduced by 11.1% compared to the BAU scenario. In 2016, waste sector greenhouse gas emissions in the BAU scenario are projected to reach 10.61 Gg CO2-eq, and will continue to grow until 2020 to 11.14 Gg CO2-eq, and in 2030 to 12.64 Gg CO2-eq. In Action Mitigation I waste management is carried out in the community by implementing methane recovery in the waste banks and TPS 3R. In Action Mitigation II, waste management is carried out at the Final Processing Site (TPA) carried out by the local government to handle it. When compared to the BAU scenario, the design of mitigation actions I and II in the context of reducing greenhouse gas emissions resulted in a decrease of 35.2%, 59.5% and 98.3% in 2013, 2020 and 2030.

Abstract: The city of Volta Redonda, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, has a controlled landfill of municipal solid waste (MSW) which was partially recovered in 2008. This disposal site has no data on the amount of waste volume landfilled. An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was used to capture images of the study area and through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) the biogas generation was determined. By overlaying the georeferenced images the contour lines were determined which enabled the creation of the 3D Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the area with a resolution of 0.296349 m / pix. The DTM provided the determination of the volume of waste landfilled (535.755,79 m3) and the real surface area (36.770,96 m2) of the controlled landfill. These parameters allowed obtainment the maximum flow rate of methane generation of 16.539,82 m3 for 2007. The Brazilian model used to determination biogas generation in waste sector achieve a maximum flow rate of methane generation of 126.599,4 m3 for the year 2007. A significant difference between biogas generation in the two models was observed mainly due to the amount of waste determined in both models.
