Research issues include the physical investment financing in Polish nonfinancial corporations in 1995 to 2011. The purpose of this study is to identify the structure of physical investment financing in Polish non-financial corporations, and to define the role of bank financing. The data used in the estimation of physical investment financing structure in Polish non-financial corporations, were obtained from two accounts belonging to the accumulation accounts, i.e. the capital account and the financial account. The study used net sources of finance methodology initiated by Mayer [1988, 1990], Corbett and Jenkinson [1994, 1997]. It uses the flow of funds rather than stock data.

AbstractPrior to the mid-1970, India’s non-economic social scientists had no role in policy, planning or implementation of resettlement, though their skills were relevant for the purpose and anthropologists had the requisite expertise. But anthropologists remained only distant onlookers of the terrible things that were happening in the name of development. In 1974 a historic change took place in the World Bank. This was the appointment of anthropologists and sociologists as regular staff. Thereafter, social concerns began receiving increasing attention in the Bank. This also resulted in a sudden demand for anthropologists and sociologists to prepare projects for Bank financing. India then also began involving anthropologists and sociologists in preparing projects involving social issues. From mere onlookers, they then became active participants in development activities.

Sharia banks have an important role to do with the development of MSMEs and the economy in Indonesia. The share of sharia bank financing in MSMEs decreased beyond the minimum limit set. This study aims to look at the role of MSME financing on the performance of Sharia banks and economic growth in Indonesia. The study used monthly data for the period 2016-2019 with the two stage least square (TSLS) analysis method. The results of this study revealed that financing in MSMEs contributes greatly to the improvement of the performance (ROA) of Sharia banks.  The financing of MSMEs of Sharia banks does not contribute directly to economic growth. The contribution of MSME financing to economic growth occurs through the role of profit (ROA) of Sharia banks. There is a two-way relationship and mutual influence between sharia bank profits and economic growth. The role of economic growth towards bank profits is greater than the role of sharia banks in economic growth. It is important to pay attention to the portion and quality of financing in MSMEs that can improve the performance of Sharia banks and at the same time boost economic growth in Indonesia.

Availability of bank financing has been a matter of serious concern for start-up enterprises. Various reasons for non-availability of bank financing by these entities have been studied in the past; however, the role of bankers’ leadership styles has not been explored well. Although leadership in the banking sector is well researched, studies on influence of leadership styles in decisions made by bankers on providing loans to start-up entrepreneurs are non-existent. Therefore, the objective of this study is to find out if three leadership styles — i.e. transformational, transactional and laissez-faire — influence bankers while they make a decision on providing a loan to a start-up entrepreneur. The findings of this paper indicate that, out of three leadership styles, transformational leadership style has a significant influence on decisions made by bankers on loans to start-up entrepreneurs while transactional and laissez-faire leadership styles did not have a significant influence on bankers.

Purpose – Today, the financing mechanisms to support small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) development have been a subject of great interest and a challenge to policy makers as SMEs are regarded as an important sector contributing to economic growth and stability. This paper is concerned with the bank financing policies to support SME development in China. The purpose of this paper is to examine the governmental financing policies and the innovation financing system of China. The discussions are focused on the bank financing policies to support SME development in China. Design/methodology/approach – This study is a qualitative research with the use of case study methodology (Eisenhardt, 1989; Yin, 2003). The research is focused on the policy perspectives of bank financing to support SME development in the case of China, the world’s fastest-growing economy. To explore the role of financial institutions and banks in SME financing in China, the research also derives evidence from a collection of documentary investigation. The research fieldwork and interviews were undertaken in Beijing and Shanghai, major financial centers in China, with the use of semi-structured questionnaire. The analyses are undertaken to answer the key questions of: What are the Chinese government’s strategies to support the development of SMEs? To what extent the government policies in bank financing can support SMEs and promote the development of an innovative economy? Findings – The empirical study has shown that despite the introduction of the 12th Five-Year National Economic and Social Development Plan to support SMEs development, China still needs to improve regulatory policies in support of innovative businesses which would help its transition to an innovation-driven economy. The study provides lessons and policy guidelines to improve the competitiveness of SMEs in China. The insights from this study can also be applied to other developing and emerging economies attempting to understand the role of financing mechanisms in building an innovative economy. Originality/value – The study has addressed the policy challenges to support SME development in China, a major Asian emerging country and one of the fastest-growing economies in the world (with averaged growth rate of 10 percent per annum). The empirical study of policy challenges was undertaken in Beijing and Shanghai, major financial centers in China. The study offers insights which can be applied to other developing and emerging economies attempting to understand the role of SME financing policies and mechanisms in building an innovative economy.
