Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have considerable economic significance in emerging economies. They provide the greater proportion of employment and create many new jobs. They have a major potential role in such countries’ economic development through the promotion of innovation and entry into the world market. This chapter examines the innovation and internationalization strategies pursued by emerging economy SMEs (EE SMEs) and the factors influencing these. Innovation and internationalization tend to be mutually reinforcing, though the role they play in SME business models can vary according to the context, such as the industry to which an SME belongs. The chapter is organized in terms of four major analytical perspectives which inform studies of international business and international entrepreneurship. These are (1) the contextual perspective (with special reference to institutions); (2) the resource-based view; (3) the network perspective; and (4) the entrepreneurial perspective. Between them, these perspectives identify many features of the environment, the firm, and its leaders that are relevant to understanding innovation and internationalization among EE SMEs. While each perspective has its own distinct focus and rationale, the factors they highlight are in practice connected.

The liberalization of markets opened doors for expansion and increased the level of competition in numerous markets. This explains that firms are increasinglydiversifying across national borders. This phenomenon is related with the international entrepreneurship, since internationalization is an example of a strategy change that can be defined as an entrepreneurial act. In this context, the scholars in international business have given answers to basically three questions: Why, where, and how do companies internationalize. Since the present research deals with entry modes choice, the focus is clearly on “how.” The choice of entry mode constitutes one of the most critical decisions for international strategy success. This research analyzes the entry mode choice from the perspective of both transaction costs and resource based theory, because these perspectives use different assumptions and consider different assumptions. Given this, I propose 4 propositions related with the study of entry mode choice from the transaction costs and resource based theory.

Internationalization of SMEs is encouraged by the advantages of new environmental conditions and appealing business opportunities, but remains a challenging process. Top management teams and more specifically board of directors appear to be a critical determinant in addressing internationalization issues. In recent years, investigation of boards in small firms’ context has been an interest of scholars, however few investigated characteristics of human capital. This study aims to investigate whether board usage of knowledge and skills is a mediator linking characteristics of human capital of board and internationalization performance of SMEs in Lithuania. The results revealed that usage of knowledge and skills mediates the relationships between international business skills and internationalization performance. Obtained results contribute to international entrepreneurship and upper-echelons theories by highlighting the role of the board in SMEs and linking it to higher internationalization performance through their usage of knowledge and skills. This study fills the research gap and extends the extant studies in internationalization of SMEs. First, the study responds to the need to investigate how board’s capital affect internationalization. Secondly, the study responds to the need to go beyond input-output models.
