In this paper, the authors present the results of a qualitative case-study seeking to characterize data discovery needs and barriers of principal investigators and research support staff in clinical translational science. Several implications for designing and implementing translational research systems have emerged through the authors’ analysis. The results also illustrate the benefits of forming early partnerships with scientists to better understand their workflow processes and end-user computing practices in accessing data for research. The authors use this user-centered, iterative development approach to guide the implementation and extension of i2b2, a system they have adapted to support cross-institutional aggregate anonymized clinical data querying. With ongoing evaluation, the goal is to maximize the utility and extension of this system and develop an interface that appropriately fits the swiftly evolving needs of clinical translational scientists.

AbstractAgile software development embraces change and manifests working software over comprehensive documentation and responding to change over following a plan. The ability to continuously release software has enabled a development approach where experimental features are put to use, and, if they stand the test of real use, they remain in production. Examples of such features include machine learning (ML) models, which are usually pre-trained, but can still evolve in production. However, many domains require more plan-driven approach to avoid hazard to environment and humans, and to mitigate risks in the process. In this paper, we start by presenting continuous software engineering practices in a regulated context, and then apply the results to the emerging practice of MLOps, or continuous delivery of ML features. Furthermore, as a practical contribution, we present a case study regarding Oravizio, first CE-certified medical software for assessing the risks of joint replacement surgeries. Towards the end of the paper, we also reflect the Oravizio experiences to MLOps in regulatory context.

Introduction: Design thinking, an innovative problem-solving approach, has gained wide popularity in healthcare disciplines. The aim of this work is to improve outpatients’ experiences in hospital pharmacies in two hospitals in Asir region, Saudi Arabia. Methods: The design thinking approach, adopted from Stanford University’s D-School, was used in this study. Results: Several problems were identified: lack of comfortable environment in the pharmacies’ waiting area, lack of a queue management system, and workflow inefficiencies related to ordering and supplies of medicines. A prototype was proposed to overcome these challenges. Discussion and Conclusion: The design thinking approach helped in identifying end-user (patients visiting outpatient pharmacies) values and desires and provided an understanding of their struggles. It also proposed tailored solutions that could improve patients’ experiences while using the services of the outpatient pharmacies.
