Maize is a widely grown crop in China, and the relationships between agroclimatic parameters and maize yield are complicated, hence, accurate and timely yield prediction is challenging. Here, climate, satellite data, and meteorological indices were integrated to predict maize yield at the city-level in China from 2000 to 2015 using four machine learning approaches, e.g., cubist, random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (Xgboost), and support vector machine (SVM). The climate variables included the diffuse flux of photosynthetic active radiation (PDf), the diffuse flux of shortwave radiation (SDf), the direct flux of shortwave radiation (SDr), minimum temperature (Tmn), potential evapotranspiration (Pet), vapor pressure deficit (Vpd), vapor pressure (Vap), and wet day frequency (Wet). Satellite data, including the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), were used. Meteorological indices, including growing degree day (GDD), extreme degree day (EDD), and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), were used. The results showed that integrating all climate, satellite data, and meteorological indices could achieve the highest accuracy. The highest estimated correlation coefficient (R) values for the cubist, RF, SVM, and Xgboost methods were 0.828, 0.806, 0.742, and 0.758, respectively. The climate, satellite data, or meteorological indices inputs from all growth stages were essential for maize yield prediction, especially in late growth stages. R improved by about 0.126, 0.117, and 0.143 by adding climate data from the early, peak, and late-period to satellite data and meteorological indices from all stages via the four machine learning algorithms, respectively. R increased by 0.016, 0.016, and 0.017 when adding satellite data from the early, peak, and late stages to climate data and meteorological indices from all stages, respectively. R increased by 0.003, 0.032, and 0.042 when adding meteorological indices from the early, peak, and late stages to climate and satellite data from all stages, respectively. The analysis found that the spatial divergences were large and the R value in Northwest region reached 0.942, 0.904, 0.934, and 0.850 for the Cubist, RF, SVM, and Xgboost, respectively. This study highlights the advantages of using climate, satellite data, and meteorological indices for large-scale maize yield estimation with machine learning algorithms.

ABSTRACT Treatment of patients with patent Wuchereria bancroftiinfection results in an acute clinical reaction and peripheral eosinophilia. To investigate the dynamics of the eosinophil response, changes in eosinophil activation and degranulation and plasma levels of eosinophil-active chemokines and cytokines were studied in 15 microfilaremic individuals in south India by sequential blood sampling before and after administration of 300 mg of diethylcarbamazine (DEC). Clinical symptoms occurred within 24 h. Plasma interleukin-5 (IL-5) and RANTES levels peaked 1 to 2 days posttreatment, preceding a peak peripheral eosinophil count at day 4. Major basic protein secretion from eosinophils paralleled IL-5 secretion, while levels of eosinophil-derived neurotoxin peaked at day 13 after treatment. Expression of the activation markers HLA-DR and CD25 on eosinophils rose markedly immediately after treatment, while expression of VLA-4 and α4β7 showed an early peak within 24 h and a second peak at day 13. Thus, the posttreatment reactions seen in filarial infections can be divided into an early phase with killing of microfilariae, clinical symptomatology, increases in plasma IL-5 and RANTES levels, and eosinophil activation and degranulation and a later phase with expression of surface integrins on eosinophils, recruitment of eosinophils from the bone marrow to tissues, and clearance of parasite antigen.

AbstractDevelopmental changes in parameters of ultrasound production were investigated in M. montanus young. The rate of ultrasonic vocalization reached a peak on Day 2 of postnatal ontogeny and declined to zero on Day 15. A similar developmental pattern has been found in several other rodent species. However, the comparatively early peak rate is indicative of a degree of ontogenic precociousness. Other developmental changes, both behavioural and morphological, tend to confirm that M. montanus young are relatively precocious. The duration of ultrasonic vocalizations did not show a significant change across early development. The mean duration for each vocalization sampled was 22.92 msec. The distribution of these vocalizations showed that a considerable number of vocalizations were of very short duration (<30 msec). The developmental changes in the percentage of young emitting ultrasounds began to decline following Day 8 and reached zero percent on Day 15. This decline in the percentage of young vocalizing corresponded to changes in maternal behaviour. Both the rate of ultrasonic vocalization and the percentage of young vocalizing were significantly correlated with the age of the young. Being correlated with age, these parameters of ultrasound production have the possibility of having great communicative value for the purposes of maternal care.

AbstractA vehicle-mounted net was used on 15 nights during June 1990 and 1991 in northern Oman to collect sandflies in order to identify potential vectors of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. A total of 2216 sandflies was collected comprising four species of Phlebotomus and three of Sergentomyia. Catches were made every 30 minutes between 17.00 h (2 hours before sunset) and 07.00 h (1.5 hours after sunrise). Very few flies were caught before sunset. Most flies were caught at light intensities < 0.1 lux (between 20.00 and 0.500 h), but some flight activity, particularly of males and unfed females, continued even up to 07.00 h (50,000 lux, 1.25 hours after sunrise). Females of the two most abundant species, Phlebotomus alexandri Sinton and Sergentomyia clydei Sinton were significantly more active during the first half of the night (19.00-01.00 h), but males were not. Males of S. clydei showed no clear activity pattern, while males of P. alexandri had two peaks with a decline in activity around 01.00 h. Sergentomyia tiberiadis Adler & Theodor and S. fallax Parrot similarly showed different activity patterns for the two sexes. The circadian activity of females of P. alexandri and S. clydei changed during their gonotrophic cycles. Thus unfed and gravid P. alexandri had two activity peaks during the night, but the blood-fed females were most active during the first half of the night. S. clydei activity was similar, except that the gravid flies, like the blood-fed, had an early peak of activity. Too few parous females were collected to show any clear difference in activity from the nullipars.

Abstract Background Members of the Anopheles hyrcanus group have been incriminated as important malaria vectors. This study aims to identify the species and explore the insecticide susceptibility profile within the Anopheles hyrcanus group in Ubon Ratchathani Province, northeastern Thailand where increasing numbers of malaria cases were reported in 2014. Methods Between 2013 and 2015, five rounds of mosquito collections were conducted using human landing and cattle bait techniques during both the rainy and dry seasons. Anopheles mosquitoes were morphologically identified and their insecticide susceptibility status was investigated. Synergist bioassays were carried out with An. hyrcanus (s.l.) due to their resistance to all insecticides. An ITS2-PCR assay was conducted to identify to species the Hyrcanus group specimens. Results Out of 10,361 Anopheles females collected, representing 18 taxa in 2 subgenera, 71.8% were morphologically identified as belonging to the Hyrcanus Group (subgenus Anopheles), followed by An. barbirostris group (7.9%), An. nivipes (6.5%), An. philippinensis (5.9%) and the other 14 Anopheles species. Specimens of the Hyrcanus Group were more prevalent during the rainy season and were found to be highly zoophilic. Anopheles hyrcanus (s.l.) was active throughout the night, with an early peak of activity between 18:00 h and 21:00 h. ITS2-PCR assay conducted on 603 DNA samples from specimens within the Hyrcanus Group showed the presence of five sisters species. Anopheles peditaeniatus was the most abundant species (90.5%, n = 546), followed by An. nitidus (4.5%, n = 27), An. nigerrimus (4.3%, n = 26), An. argyropus (0.5%, n = 3), and An. sinensis (0.2%, n = 1). All An. hyrcanus (s.l.) specimens that were found resistant to insecticides (deltamethrin 0.05%, permethrin 0.75% and DDT 4% and synergist tests) belonged to An. peditaeniatus. The degree of resistance in An. peditaeniatus to each of these three insecticides was approximately 50%. Addition of PBO (Piperonyl butoxide), but not DEF (S.S.S-tributyl phosphotritioate), seemed to restore susceptibility, indicating a potential role of oxidases as a detoxifying enzyme resistance mechanism. Conclusions A better understanding of mosquito diversity related to host preference, biting activity and insecticide resistance status will facilitate the implementation of locally adapted vector control strategies.

In the present investigation, we identified cortical areas involved in the integration of bimanual inputs in human somatosensory cortex. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), we compared the responses to unilateral versus bilateral stimulation in anterior parietal cortex and areas in the Sylvian fissure of the contralateral hemisphere. The extent of fMRI activation on the upper bank of the Sylvian fissure, in the second somatosensory (S2) and the parietal ventral (PV) areas, was significantly larger for bilateral stimulation than for unilateral stimulation. Using MEG, we were able to describe the latency of response in S1 and S2/PV to unilateral and bilateral stimulation. The MEG response had three components under both stimulus conditions. An early peak in S1 at 40 ms, a middle peak in S2/PV at 80–160 ms, and three late peaks in S2/PV at 250–420 ms. There was an increase in magnetic field strength in S2/PV to bilateral stimulation at 300–400 ms post stimulus. The fMRI results indicate that, as in monkeys, S2/PV receives inputs from both the contralateral and ipsilateral hand. The MEG data suggest that information is processed serially from S1 to S2. The very late response in S2/PV indicates that extensive intrahemispheric processing occurs before information is transferred to the opposite hemisphere. The neural substrate for the increased activation and field strength at long latencies during bilateral stimulation can be accounted for in three ways. Under bilateral stimulus conditions, more neurons may be active, neuronal firing rate may increase, and/or neural activity may be more synchronous.

1. Medullary raphespinal neurons antidromically activated from the T2-T5 segments were tested for responses to electrical stimulation of cervical vagal and thoracic sympathetic afferents (by stimulating the left stellate ganglion), somatic probing, auditory stimuli, and visual stimuli in cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. A total of 99 neurons in the raphe nuclei were studied; the locations of 76 cells were histologically confirmed. Neurons were located in raphe magnus (RM, 65%), raphe obscurus (RO, 32%), and raphe pallidus (RPa, 4%). The mean conduction velocity of these neurons was 62 +/- 2.9 (SE) m/s with a range of 1.1-121 m/s. 2. A total of 60/99 tested neurons responded to electrical stimulation of sympathetic afferents. Quantitation of responses was obtained for 55 neurons. With one exception, all responsive neurons were excited and exhibited an early burst of spikes with a mean latency of 16 +/- 1.2 ms. From a spontaneous discharge rate of 5.2 +/- 1.2 spikes/s, neuronal activity increased by 2.9 +/- 0.3 spikes/stimulus. In addition to an early peak, 15 neurons (25%) exhibited a late burst of spikes with a latency of 182 +/- 12.9 ms; neuronal activity increased by 5.0 +/- 1.3 spikes/stimulus. Duration of the late peak (130 +/- 18.5 ms) was longer than for the early peak (18 +/- 0.7 ms), but threshold voltages for eliciting each peak were comparable. Sixteen of 29 spontaneously active neurons exhibited a postexcitatory depression of activity that lasted for 163 +/- 19.1 ms. All but one tested neuron in RO responded to stimulation of sympathetic afferents, but 65% of neurons in RM responded to this stimulus. 3. In response to vagal afferent stimulation, 19% of 57 neurons exhibited inhibition only, 11% were only excited, and 9% were either excited or inhibited, depending on the stimulus paradigm used; the remaining 61% of neurons were unresponsive. From a spontaneous rate of 7.9 +/- 3.8 spikes/s, excited cells increased their discharge rate by 1.6 +/- 0.3 spikes/stimulus. Activity of inhibited cells was reduced from 21.3 +/- 5.8 to 7.8 +/- 3.1 spikes/s. The conditioning-test (CT) technique was used to assess 11 neurons' responses. Stellate ganglion stimulation was the test stimulus, and vagal stimulation the conditioning stimulus. Vagal stimulation reduced the neuronal responses to stellate ganglion stimulation by an average of 50% with a CT interval of 60-100 ms, and cell responses returned to control after 300 ms. With spontaneous cell activity, low frequencies of vagal stimulation were generally excitatory, and high frequencies (10-20 Hz) inhibitory.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
