In today’s business environment characterized by intense competition from globalization and incessantly changing customer needs, market orientation (MO) has been presented as a valuable approach for firms to safeguard themselves against market fluctuations and maintain continuous superior performance. Even though existing literature suggest that MO is a vital driver of business performance, some studies have failed to find its benefits. This is possibly because the MO-performance relationship is has been argued to be context specific and contingent to the business environment. This study thus had as objective to investigate the impact of MO on SME performance, as well as the moderating effects of the external environment on the MO- performance nexus. Using data from South Africa, this study showed that two of the three dimensions of MO (i.e. customer orientation, competitor focus) are significant drivers of business performance and that the MO-performance nexus is moderated by the external environmental factors. Specifically the MO-performance relationship is positively moderated by market turbulence and negative moderated by technological turbulence and competitive intensity. The study culminates with theoretical and practical implications that can be valuable for scholars and businesses operating in South Africa

The studies to establish the relationship between the external environment and business performance have not produced any conclusive results. Moreover, the field combining environmental uncertainty, information systems (IS) strategy and business performance has not been well explored. Considering the gap in current research, this study conceptualises an information systems environmental alignment model. The model analysed the extent of support provided by IS strategy in the assessment of environmental uncertainty and also examined the impact of IS environmental alignment on business performance. Based on empirical data collected by means of a questionnaire from 22 commercial banks in South Africa (covering more than 90% of the commercial banking sector) and using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) technique, the study validated the IS environmental alignment model and found that banks were using IS support to assess the external environment of business. The results suggest that it is not the IS support or investment in information technology (IT) that impacts on business performance, but rather the effective use of IS support in meeting the information needs of the organisation. The study also found that profitability still remains the key measure of business performance in the banking sector in South Africa. These findings have major implications for IT investment by banks, and for the implementation of IS strategy and general investment in the banking sector. IS environmental alignment is becoming extremely important for business because of the substantial investment in IT and the uncertainty of the business environment.

The paper is focused on the determination of new knowledge about interfunctional coordination. Interfunctional coordination was defined at the beginning of 90s. It is the coordination of all company activities leading to the increase of business performance. Interfunctional coordination is connected with market orientation. It is one of necessary principle of market orientation. It is not possible to use market orientation without interfunctional coordination. Market orientation is based on marketing conception. The first detailed studies were offered by Kohli and Jaworski (1990) and Narver and Slater (1990). Market orientation is described as a method helping to contribute better managing of a company by many researchers. A lot of papers on this topic were publicized during the last two decades. The earliest papers involved the first definitions of market orientation; offered methods for its measuring; and investigated the impact of market orientation on business performance. The last attitudes towards market orientation agree that market orientation enables managers to focus on external and internal elements and activities, which influence the activity of a company leading to its performance increase (Tomaskova, 2009). At present, we have a lot of methods used for the measuring of market orientation. Using a proper method depends on the branch or economic system. The perception of the implementation of market orientation is changing during the period, as well. However, the main principle is still the same – market orientation has a positive impact on business performance. Nowadays, a lot of authors deal with the implementation of market orientation. Because of this reason, we have prepared research “Research on implementation on market orientation in Hi-Tech Firms” (GA 402/07/1493). The goal of the research was to detect barriers of the implementation of market orientation. We divided the barriers of the implementation into three parts according to managers’ influence in an internal, branch and external environment. State, economy and technologies are named as the main elements of external environment. The main barriers connected with the elements of branch environment are quality and quantity of branch stakeholders. Barriers of internal environment involve the barriers connected with the top management and its personality, skills, knowledge and experiences, all employees of a company and interfunctional coordination. The paper deals with the interfunctional coordination at hi-tech firms. The objective of the paper is to define barriers connected with interfunctional coordination and to detect the perception and importance of interfunctional coordination at hi-tech firms. The theoretical knowledge is noticed in some research studies. The data was acquired by means of a questionnaire. New Method measured market orientation in a company. The questionnaire New Method with 7-point Likert scale constituted by Tomaskova (2005) was used for the research. The complete database was analysed by using standard statistical methods (correlation analysis, Spearman correlation coefficient, chi-square) as well as other sophisticated techniques (Cronbach alpha). The main results of the research show that the level of market orientation at the hi-tech firms in the Czech Republic is high and confirm how important is gaining information and using this information inside the company for market orientation. The main results of the research confirm that interfunctional coordination is the base of market orientation. Hi-tech firms in the Czech Republic perceive interfunctional coordination as very necessary presumption for their future development and prosperity. The highest rate for this part received the following statements confirming positive company attitude for innovation, preference for teamwork and mutual cooperation in firms and also effort to be flexible. Purpose Changes are inevitable and organisations should develop their organisational capacity for change (OCC) to survive. This paper aims to test the effect of market orientation on OCC (learning, process and context), as well as the impact of OCC on organisational performance. Design/methodology/approach This research used a survey of 314 heads of study programmes in Indonesia’s highest-ranked universities to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings The results of this research demonstrate that OCC is determined by customer orientation and cross-functional coordination (market orientation), while competitor orientation influences the learning dimension of OCC. Moreover, only the context dimension of OCC positively influences organisational performance in addition to serving as a mediator between market orientation (customer orientation and cross-functional coordination) and organisational performance, whereas competitor orientation positively influences organisational performance. Originality/value This paper empirically tested the three dimensions of OCC (learning, process and context) that had previously been discussed only conceptually. Furthermore, the organisation should be market-oriented to possess the capacity for change. Finally, the paper proposes and demonstrates that organisational context (culture) plays a significant role in OCC in developing organisational performance.

With the privatization of the health sector and an overall trend in health care where the servicing of the patients and illness prevention is becoming a major source of industry’s revenue, marketing innovation to attract new customers is becoming increasingly relevant for organizational performance and financial results of hospitals. Consequently, offering an innovative and superior marketing mix for the customers is a necessary requirement for market competitiveness. Marketing operations and market orientation should, therefore, aim to boost the marketing innovation of hospitals. In this paper, we built a research framework to measure influence of market orientation on marketing innovation in Saudi Arabia hospitals. By determining the relationship between the market orientation factors, centralization, formalization and marketing innovation, organizations will know which aspect of market orientation to focus on. A six-step research framework has been proposed which will help to explain the impact of customer orientation, inter-functional orientation and competitor orientation on marketing innovation together with the moderating effects of centralization and formalization on those relationships. The findings of the future study may suggest an important role of market orientation for an effective innovation generation and business performance of hospitals in Saudi Arabia.

Despite the growing literature on the impact of entrepreneurial traits of managers/owners on the performance of small firms in developed economies, little is known about the contribution of managerial competencies (MC) of these managers/owners to the success of their firms. Since entrepreneurial literature attributes the failure of most emerging businesses (i.e. in their first three years of existence) to the paucity of MC among managers/owners of emerging businesses, an investigation into the effects of these competencies on the performance of small emerging internet businesses is critical to locating the strategic levers that potentially optimise the growth and sustainability of these businesses in emerging economies. This theoretical study, therefore, examines the relationship between managerial competencies of owners/ managers and the performance of emerging internet firms in South Africa. Extant literature and researchers reflective experiences were used to develop a conceptual model on the relationship between managerial competencies of managers/owners of small internet caf and the performance of their firms. The model suggests that an assortment of managerial competencies (human capital requirements, resources and individual capabilities) is critical to the improved performance of small internet businesses. The thesis of this paper is that understanding the appropriate constitution of managerial competencies ideal for emerging technology firms, organisational context of emerging technology firms including the broader business environment would positively impact small internet business performance.

Industri kreatif menjadi competitive advantage tersendiri bagi Indonesia yang memiliki potensi berlimpah pada intellectual capital yang tersebar di seluruh pulau untuk memunculkan model bisnis yang inovatif dan membuka lapangan kerja baru. Sasaran dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis hubunga antara orientasi strategis (dimana pada penelitian ini terdiri dari orientasi pelanggan, orientasi pesaing dan orientasi biaya) dengan kemampuan inovasi berbasis layanan. Unit penelitian ini adalah usaha mikro, kecil dan menengah (UMKM) yang beroperasi pada salah satu dari sub-sektor industri kreatif dan terletak di Bandung, Denpsar, Jakarta atau Yogyakarta. Dengan analisis kuantitatif, penelitian ini melihat hubungan antara variabel independen dan dependen melalui tes hipotesis menggunakan metode ordinary least square. Metode pertanyaan terbuka digunakan untuk melihat pola pengembangan bisnis kreatif responden. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan bahwa orientasi pelanggan dan orientasi biaya memiliki hubungan positif terhadap kemampuan inovasi berdasarkan jasa. Sedangkan, orientasi pesaing tidak memiliki hubungan yang siginifikan terhadap kemampuan inovasi berbasis layanan. Dari penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelaku usaha (dalam hal ini UMKM) memiliki fokus pada konsumen dan efisiensi biaya yang pada akhirnya akan membentuk budaya inovasi yang sesuai dengan lingkungan bisnis mereka.Creative industry is becoming competitive advantages to Indonesia. It has huge potency of intellectual capital around islands. Creative business aim to creating innovative business model and open absorb labor force. The objective of this study is to examine and analyze the relationships between strategic orientation (in this research consist of three dimensions; customer orientation, competitor orientation and cost orientation)and service innovation capability. Object of this study was Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that operates in one of creative subsector industry and located at in Bandung, Denpasar, Jakarta or Yogyakarta. By using quantitative analysis, this study analyzed the relationship between independent and dependent variables through testing hypotheses using ordinary least square method. Open question method also used to show the pattern of creative business development from owners point of viewt. The result of this study found customer orientation and cost orientation positively related to service innovation capability. While, competitor orientation shows not have significant relationship to service innovation capability. From this research can be conclude that creative business (MSMEs) has focus on deserve customers interest. Besides, at the same time they create efficiency in cost. Mix of both orientations in the end will creating innovation culture that fit to their business environment.

Organizations are increasingly dependent on information systems, and they invest dearly on systems to integrate disparate business functions, automate business processes, and support operations in order to sustain business and survive in a competition-intensive business environment. However, such systems have in many occasions failed fully or partially. The lack of “fit-to purpose” seems to be the common factor among most of the failed cases. This suggests that such systems are not selected, implemented, configured, or supported based on a proper analysis and understanding of the organization structure and hierarchy, business functions, business processes, and business environment. Evidently, the majority of organizations tend to emphasize system specifications that match their operational and tactical requirements, with little attention given to strategic requirements, culminating in issues with strategic planning and decision making. This chapter uses a survey and simple model based on the characteristics and competitiveness indicators of strategic information systems (SIS) to examine the impact of such systems on the business performance in 16 medium to large Arab organizations. The study concludes with an emphasis of the importance of SIS to help organizations achieve excellence and competitive advantage and realize business objectives and goals.

In the rapidly changing global business environment, it can be seen that supply chain designs based solely on efficiency and speed do not necessarily lead to a sustainable competitive advantage. According to Lee (2004), this can only be done if supply chains are designed to incorporate the Triple A: Agility, Adaptability and Alignment. Although Lee provided some examples, to date his claim has not been empirically tested, which is essential. A number of studies have looked at the three component parts of the Triple A separately, but as yet no studies have focused on all three Triple A components concurrently, or on the impact they have on business performance. The main aim of this chapter is to determine the dimensions and factors that characterize these variables, in order to empirically test the accuracy of Lee’s claim.
