Cold-smoked salmon processing plants were surveyed to determine the occurrence and sources of L. monocytogenes contamination. Sanitation and cleanup procedures adequately eliminated L. monocytogenes from the processing line and equipment, but recontamination occurred soon after resumption of processing. The primary source of contamination proved to be the surface areas of frozen or fresh raw fish coming into the plant. Listeria species were not isolated from the flesh except when they were introduced during the filleting operation, by the injection of recirculated brine, or in localized areas where there were pre-existing bruises. Penetration of L. monocytogenes into intact flesh via the vascular system did not occur when fresh fish were immobilized with carbon dioxide and bled, nor when frozen, headed, and eviscerated fish were thawed for 20 h in water inoculated with 44 L. monocytogenes organisms per ml. Populations of L. monocytogenes inoculated onto the surface of brined salmon portions changed very little during a cold-smoke process at 72 to 87°F (22.2 to 30.6°C) for 20 h, with or without applied smoke; but when the processing temperature was lowered to 63 to 70°F (17.2 to 21.1°C), populations decreased 10- to 25-fold when smoke was applied. L. monocytogenes injected into the interior of these portions increased 2- to 6-fold at 63 to 70°F (17.2 to 21.1°C) and 100-fold at 72 to 87°F (22.2 to 30.6°C), regardless of the presence of smoke. L. monocytogenes was enumerated in 48 contaminated finished products collected from six different processing plants. L. monocytogenes populations ranged from 0.3 to 34.3 cells per g, with a mean of 6.2 per g and a median of 3.2 per g.

The use of in vivo haploid induction system makes the doubled haploid (DH) technology easier to adopt for the conventional maize breeders. However, despite having played an important role in the initial developmental phases of DH technology, Indian maize research has yet to harvest its benefits. Haploid Inducer Lines (HILs) developed by CIMMYT are being widely used in maize breeding programmes in many countries including India. There, however, is no published information on the efficiency of DH line production using CIMMYT HILs in Indian maize breeding programmes. In the present study, the efficiency of DH production using CIMMYT’s tropically adapted inducer line TAILP1 was investigated with eight source populations including two of sweet corn. The average haploid induction rate (HIR) of TAILP1 was 5.48% with a range of 2.01 to 10.03%. Efficiency of DH production ranged from 0.14 to 1.87% for different source populations with an average of 1.07%. The information generated will be useful for maize breeders intending to use DH technology for accelerated development of completely homozygous lines.

Oy Metsä-Botnia Ab's Kaskinen mill produces ECF and TCF bleached softwood and hardwood pulp on a single continuous production line. Production capacity has been raised from 250,000 tonnes to 420,000 tonnes a year after the commission in 1977. The basic process solutions date mainly from the 1970s. However, process technology has been gradually modernised. With systematic and well-timed process development investments the mill has remained competitive and among frontrunners in terms of environmental protection. Today, Kaskinen represent the best available technology (BAT) applicable to old mills. Effluent loading in general and nutrient emissions in particular has diminished during the development projects of the mill. Comparison to other mills shows that as far as effluent emissions are concerned, Kaskinen is one of the best pulp mills in Finland and Scandinavia. In this presentation, Kaskinen is also compared to Metsä-Rauma, the first greenfield TCF mill in the world, which was started up in 1996. Kaskinen's pioneering work on TCF technology was used as a basis for process solutions in the Rauma greenfield project.

A series of seed-processing machines were used to evaluate seed quality improvement in paddy during the Kharif season 2013-14. The processing machines proved an efficient tool in producing quality seeds. The consistent and higher seed quality (germination 91.67% and physical purity 99.83%) could be achieved by efficient use of processing machines. The product and separate (reject) from individual machines were analysed to evaluate machine efficiency in separating the seed components as well as impurities from the harvested lot. The air-screen machines were found effective in removing dead seeds, whereas specific gravity separator removed abnormal seeds significantly. Gradual increase in seed quality was recorded with decrease in recovery in the processing line. Seed loss in reject port was always associated with handling of seed lots by each machine and observed only 1.30%. Specific gravity separator was found essential for the seed lot of medium-term storage or for the buffer stocking.
