Background: With the increasing global population of older adults, there is a need for environmental interventions that directly affect their physical, psychological, and emotional well-being to help them maintain or regain their independence and autonomy – all of which promote longevity. Methods: To better understand potential opportunities and challenges associated with interior design and “future homes” that may promote well-being, aging in place, and independent living in older adults, the authors reviewed relevant literature and included their own expert opinions from a multidisciplinary point of view including interior design, wellness, and engineering. Results: After summarizing existing environmental interventions for the aging population and their effectiveness, this review reveals knowledge gaps in interior design for the well-being and longevity of older adults followed by a discussion of opportunities for future research that may fill these gaps. Some of these opportunities include finding habilitative design strategies that identify and address unique situational needs of each user, advancing multidisciplinary fields such as environmental gerontology that recreate security and independence for older adults even outside of their homes, implementing technically advanced design strategies, which are flexible and adaptive to individual needs; and integrating the Internet of things (IoT) into living environments, including voice-activated command technologies to improve seniors’ central role in enabling an optimized healthcare ecosystem. Conclusions: Knowledge of current evidence regarding the impact of different environmental factors may hasten adaptation of well-designed innovations that can provide optimal healing and living environments for the aging population. By effectively addressing older adults’ unique and specialized needs, design practitioners can become an indispensable part of their medical, social, and environmental team. One of the rapidly developing infrastructures promising to revolutionize the design of “future homes” is the IoT. While it is at an early stage of development, ultimately we envisage a connected home using voice-controlled technology and Bluetooth-radio-connected add-ons, to augment much of what home health does today. Bringing these approaches together into an effective strategy for a model of effective geriatric care is important and needs to become an integral part of both design education and practice.

As countries start to emerge from the pandemic with the development of vaccines, the impact of COVID-19 and the changes it has initiated in the business world will continue to be felt across industries. In this chapter, real-life stories from three different industries—chain restaurants, interior design, and cafés—and the lessons they have learned will be discussed and analyzed. The role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in SMEs is highlighted as a strategy in which organizations can promote the long-term sustainability of their business. Then, three companies in various industries will be introduced with details about how COVID-19 has changed their outlook and goals in competing with other firms and the ways in which they confronted the pandemic. Finally, the authors share implications and offer helpful recommendations as to how SMEs can leverage resources smartly to engage in smart CSR initiatives in better dealing with a global health crisis and play a larger role in taking care of stakeholders in the long run.

The article presents the results of simulation tests carried out in the DIALux program concerning the influence of light reflection coefficients on photometric calculations. The analysis was made for two exemplary rooms for various purposes and for different capacities. For each of the rooms, the parameters of the calculation plane have been defined. The lighting fixtures were good depending on the work being done in each of the rooms and the height of the ceiling. The standard reflection coefficients for each room have been pre-assigned. The number of fittings and placement is planned in accordance with the lighting standard. Photometric calculations were made for different values of co-factors, while maintaining the initial values of the other two coefficients. The results obtained were compiled and compared in terms of the impact of variability of coefficients on average illumination and its uniformity. For extreme cases that do not meet the lighting standards, the optimized arrangement of the luminaires was proposed and the results obtained were presented. The research has shown that in the case of the rooms in question, the biggest influence on the results of photometric calculations has the reflectivity of light from the walls. Discrepancies between the intensity obtained in the case of smaller rooms indicate how important factor in the lighting design process is information about the planned interior design.

Background: A predominant notion among researchers is that hospital room design and decor are subject to the designer’s expression of self, which is contrary to evidence-based studies showing that design and decor can impact patient health. The aim of this study was to examine whether improvement in quality of healthcare provided in hospitals could be achieved through the convergence of expertise of healthcare professionals and hospital room designers. Methods: This was a prospective study to identify the impact of hospital interior design features with a focus on single occupancy rooms. Volunteers were recruited through advertisements and the study was conducted at the Tripoli Medical Center. Responses were analyzed using a three-dimensional computer-aided design software to help respondents accurately map their preferences and visualize outcomes. Results: Participants preferred an aesthetically pleasing hospital room environment that included art and bright colors, window views, and the need for personalization, technology, mobility, and flexibility, all of which improved satisfaction and happiness. Of these, participants’ preference for technology as a cause for satisfaction and happiness was a novel finding. Conclusion: Designers of hospital room interiors should plan and create an appealing single occupancy room for increasing user satisfaction and patient wellness.

This article describes the pedagogy, conceptual framework, outcomes and experiences of an annual Interdisciplinary Cluster Competition (ICC) organized at the beginning of every spring semester for junior students in the disciplines of Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture and Visual Communication at a major University in the United States southwest. It is descriptive a study.   Students’ teams applied Studio Based Learning pedagogy applied to a real world problem. This combination enhanced the competition learning outcomes because of the impact of intraprofessional experience on student learning and their ability to generate holistic and resourceful solutions (Shraiky J. & Lamb 2012). The result was a win-win experience that empowered students to become social changers, and exposed them to an understanding of interdisciplinary collaborative practice. Students’ motivation to win the competition increased in comparison with previous years with the implementation of a “priceless” award.
