Abstract This paper describes the role of fabric anisotropy during clayey soil deformation. A set of triaxial tests was performed on vertical and horizontal specimens of undisturbed smectite lake sediments from Jurica, Queretaro in Mexico. The results allowed to analyze the influence of bedding and discontinuities on the mechanical behavior of Jurica clays after failure. Tests with applied low strain rates allowed pore pressure equalization within specimens with different gravimetric water content and degree of saturation. Shear failure results of undrained tests showed that deformation distributes differently in both horizontal and vertical directions and that stress may be dissipated by pore collapses, fractures and particle deformation. The experimental evidence suggests that microfabric is a relevant variable in the overall mechanical response of clayey sediments that depends on the natural fabric (bedding and discontinuities), mineralogy, and water content. A detailed analysis of Young´s Moduli (E) showed the high variability of this parameter from 108 to 409 kg/cm2 (calculated at 30% of σdmax) and its dependence on the orientation of the specimen and the water content. In addition, p’-q’ graphs illustrate the relevance of considering mechanical anisotropy in clays and provide further insights to understand the role of smectites in progressive shear deformation.

Single muscle fibres from the giant barnacle, Balanus nubilis, were chemically skinned (2% Tween 20), then equilibrated for 40 h in salt solutions ranging in ionic strength from 0·025 to 0·6M at pH 7·0. The water content of the fibres and the net charge on the myofilaments increased with increasing salt concentration. Cation accumulation in the fibres was about equal to anion exclusion at all salt concentrations. When an organic solute (trimethylamine oxide, glycine, alanine, serine, proline, or glycerol) in the concentration range from 0·1 to 0·6 M was added to the salt solution, cation accumulation increased and water content decreased. Myofilament architecture was disrupted when the fibres were equilibrated in high salt (> 0·4 M) solutions and preserved when 0·5 M-triethylamine oxide was also added. The results are consistent with the view that organic solutes enhance the association between the fixed charge sites and their counterions. This hypothesis is examined quantitatively using the Oosawa relationship between the volume and the counterion association for cylindrical polyelectrolytes. The results illustrate that organic solutes can influence fibre volume in a way other than through osmo-regulation.

Palavras-chave: resistência do solo, umidade, agregação.     FERNANDES, B. QUADRACTIC REGRESSION FOR WATER CONTENTS IN THE FUNCTION OF SOIL COMPACTION     2 ABSTRACT   The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of water content in the evaluation of mechanical resistance to soil penetration, measured through the cone index. The experiment was conducted at UNESP/FCA, Botucatu - SP, being selected two classes of soil: a Nitossolo Vermelho distroférrico and a Latosolo Vermelho. A completely randomized design was used, with the following compaction treatments: T0 = 0; T1 = 1; T2 = 2; T3 = 3; T4 = 5 and T5 = 10 consecutive passes of an agricultural tractor. A hydraulic-electronic penetrometer was used to sample the mechanical resistance of the soil to penetrate the layers; 0.00 – 0.10; 0.10 - 0.20; 0.20 - 0.30; 0.30 - 0.40 m in four water content conditions. With the increase in traffic, greater was the compression. However, for the clayey soil, from a tractor pass, the penetration resistance values had a small increase, not differing statistically for the most superficial layer (0 - 0.20m) and for the 0.20 - 0.40 m layer from two passes. For medium textured soil, this behavior was observed from one pass to the most superficial layer (0 - 0.20 m) and five passes to the 0.20 - 0.40 m layer.   Keywords: soil resistance; moisture; aggregation.

A water treatment sludge (WTS) was characterized in order to evaluate if its properties would be suitable for use as liner of earthworks or for strengthening a clay soil. A WTS and a clayey soil was characterized in terms of granulometry, cumulative volumes, specific surface, density, plastic limit, liquid limit, water content, hydraulic conductivity, and characteristics of compaction (optimal water content and dry density). This study aimed to exhibit and evaluate these investigated parameters of WTS, soft soil and mixed proportions between the materials for liners’ material production while evaluating soft soils’ reinforcement feasibility. The results have shown WTS’s contribution with its fine granulometry and compaction characteristics, indicating filling properties and possible feasibility as soft soils additions for liners’ material production while being applicable for soils‘ reinforcements, corroborating with existing literature on the subject. Thus, the currently developed investigation has exposed WTS as a potential addition for these applications while also attending society’s new demands towards a more sustainable future.
