Intensively reared early weaned lambs are conventionally fed a high energy concentrate diet in order to maximise daily gain and feed conversion efficiency. This reduces both the time required to reach slaughter weight and the overhead costs. However, it is estimated that feed costs in intensive lamb systems amount to 0.24 of the total output value (MLC 1998) and that the profitability is sensitive to relatively small changes in the lamb price to feed cost ratio. The objective of the work was to investigate the effects of various alternative feeds consisting of molassed sugar beet feed (MSBF), distillers products and the whole barley or grainbeet (200 g/kg MSBF and 700 g/kg brewers grain) on the performance and profitability of intensively reared lambs.

Se recomienda la inclusión del 30 % del afrecho de yuca en sustitución parcial del maíz Palabras clave: Alimentos alternativos, composición nutritiva, digestibilidad, materia seca, producción de gas ABSTRACT  Was to determine the degradability in vitro of the cassava bran  obtained in the Canton Chone, its possibility to substitute 10, 20 o 30% the corn  in the feeding of the pigs in growth and finalization, for which we used 16 pigs, 8 females and 8 castrated males distributed in a completely randomized design as well as its economic advantage. The obtained results show a high degradability of the evaluated product and that in the phases of growth as much as finalization and the feeds consumption, body weight and the nutritious conversion didn't differ significantly among the treatments with cassava bran and the control of corn; as for the cost of the feeds for treatments this diminishes as the level of substitution of the corn increased. The cassava bran is economically a new sustainable and advantageous alternative for producing of pigs. The inclusion of 30% of cassava bran in partial substitution of maize is recommended Keywords: Alternative feeds, digestibility, dry matter, gas production nutritious composition

In certain parts of the world the use of grain crops for animal feeding is limited and where there is competition for direct human use, alternative feeds must be considered. Root crops are a potential feedstuff for growing pigs in some situations and the objective of the present programme of work is to establish the nutritional value of these materials and to investigate factors which effect their utilisation in pig diets. The high moisture content of root crops results in low nutrient density and the current experiment was designed to examine whether this resulted in any limitation on food intake and subsequent growth performance of growing pigs. This was achieved by formulating diets to contain different proportions of root crop and concentrate; these diets were isoenergetic/isonitrogenous when based on dry matter but varied in nutrient density when expressed on a fresh weight basis.

Two experiments were done to assess the effects of alternative feeds (AF; dried distillers grains with solubles, carob pods, olive cake, and bread by-product) on lactating performance of ewes and digestibility and nitrogen (N) retention of lambs. Diets were: no AF (CON); 200 g/kg AF (AF200); and 400 g/kg AF (AF400). In Experiment 1, 27 Awassi ewes were randomly distributed into three groups, and each was fed one of the diets described before (9 ewes/diet). Evaluation of milk composition and yield was performed at the beginning of the experiment and on days 18, 36, and 54. In Experiment 2, 18 Awassi lambs were allocated to the same diets (6 ewe lambs/diet) during a 21-day trial (14 days housed individually in shaded pens and 7 days in metabolic cages). In Experiment 1, no differences in body weight (BW) of the ewes and their lambs were detected. With the exception of neutral detergent fiber intake, which was lower in the AF-containing diets compared with CON, dry matter, crude protein, and acid detergent fiber intake were not affected by dietary treatment. Milk yield and composition was comparable among diets, and the cost of milk production was lower in AF compared to CON diet. In Experiment 2, nutrient digestibility and N retention were not affected by the diet. Results showed the possibility of including different AF in ewe and lamb diets to mitigate production cost without negatively affecting intake, milk yield, and composition, digestibility, and animal welfare and health.
