The choice for the arrangement of the UV lamps in a closed-conduit ultraviolet (CCUV) reactor significantly affects the performance. However, a systematic methodology for the optimal lamp arrangement within the chamber of the CCUV reactor is not well established in the literature. In this research work, we propose a viable systematic methodology for the lamp arrangement based on a genetic algorithm (GA). In addition, we analyze the impacts of the diameter, angle, and symmetry of the lamp arrangement on the reduction equivalent dose (RED). The results are compared based on the simulated RED values and evaluated using the computational fluid dynamics simulations software ANSYS FLUENT. The fluence rate was calculated using commercial software UVCalc3D, and the GA-based lamp arrangement optimization was achieved using MATLAB. The simulation results provide detailed information about the GA-based methodology for the lamp arrangement, the pathogen transport, and the simulated RED values. A significant increase in the RED values was achieved by using the GA-based lamp arrangement methodology. This increase in RED value was highest for the asymmetric lamp arrangement within the chamber of the CCUV reactor. These results demonstrate that the proposed GA-based methodology for symmetric and asymmetric lamp arrangement provides a viable technical solution to the design and optimization of the CCUV reactor.

Abstract We introduce and define a new family of mobile robots called BAR (Buoyancy Assisted Robots) that are cheap, safe, and will never fall down. BARs utilize buoyancy from lighter-than-air gases as a way to support the weight of the robot for locomotion. A new BAR robot named BLAIR (Buoyant Legged Actuated Inverted Robot) whose buoyancy is greater than its weight is also presented in this paper. BLAIRs can walk “upside-down” on the ceiling, providing unique advantages that no other robot platforms can. Unlike other legged robots, the mechanics of how BARs walk is fundamentally different. We also perform a preliminary investigation for BARs. This includes comparing safety, cost, and energy consumption with other commercially available robots. Additionally, the preliminary investigation also includes analyzing previous works relating to BARs. A dynamical analysis is performed on the novel robot BLAIR. This is presented to show the impacts of buoyant and drag forces on BLAIRs. Preliminary analysis with the prevalence of drag is presented with simulations using a genetic algorithm and simulations. Results show that BARs with different mechanisms prefer different styles of walking gaits such as prancing or skipping. This work lays the foundation for future research work on the gaits for BARs.

AbstractWater disinfection making use of an ultraviolet (UV) reactor is an attractive procedure because it does not produce any by-products. In this work, the effects of pipe roughness on the performance of a closed-conduit water disinfection UV reactor were investigated. In order to incorporate the surface roughness effects, a simple, stable, highly accurate model, better than any iterative approximation, was adopted in the numerical simulations. The analysis was carried out on the basis of two performance indicators: reduction equivalent dose (RED) and system dose distribution. The analysis was performed using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool (ANSYS Fluent). The fluence rate within the UV reactor was calculated using UVCalc3D. The pipe surface roughness resulted in longer pathogen residence times and higher dose distribution among the pathogens. The effect of pipe surface roughness on RED depends on the Reynolds number and relative roughness. Pipe surface roughness plays an important role because UV reactors for water disinfection operate at moderate Reynolds numbers. In addition, the positioning of the UV lamp in the reactor plays an important role in determining the RED of the reactor. Search criteria for lamp-positioning are also proposed in the current work. The proposed CFD methodology can be used to analyse the performance of closed-conduit reactors for water disinfection by UV.

Within the scope of the research work, we have developed the methods and software package for solving the conjugate heat and hydraulic problems based on the classical approach to performing hydraulic calculations and modeling thermal processes by means of the finite volume method in the ANSYS Fluent software package. The developed means allowed us to efficiently calculate the thermal state of complex technical objects. The study gives mathematical formulation of the methods and suggests the results of their approbation and verification

Synthetic biology aims to engineer biological circuits, which often involve gene expression. A particularly promising group of regulatory elements are riboswitches because of their versatility with respect to their targets, but early synthetic designs were not as attractive because of a reduced dynamic range with respect to protein regulators. Only recently, the creation of toehold switches helped overcome this obstacle by also providing an unprecedented degree of orthogonality. However, a lack of automated design and optimization tools prevents the widespread and effective use of toehold switches in high-throughput experiments. To address this, we developed Toeholder, a comprehensive open-source software for toehold design and in silico benchmarking. Toeholder takes into consideration sequence constraints as well as data derived from molecular dynamics simulations of a toehold switch. We describe the software and its in silico validation results, as well as its potential applications and impacts on the management and design of toehold switches.

The research work carried out in this paper introduces a robust design method for layout synthesis of MEM resonator subject to inherent geometric uncertainties such as the fabrication error on the sidewall of the structure. The robust design problem is formulated as a multi-objective constrained optimization problem with certain assumptions and treated by a special constrained genetic algorithm. The MEM design used for validation is a crab-leg resonator taken from the literature. The results show that the approach proposed in this research can lead to design results that meet the target performance and are less sensitive to geometric uncertainties than typical designs.

Gene expression programming (GEP) introduced by Candida Ferreira is a descendant of genetic algorithm (GA) and genetic programming (GP). It takes the advantage of both the optimization and search technique based on genetics and natural selection as GA and its programmatic Darwinian counterpart GP. It is gaining popularity because; it has to some extent eradicated the ‘cons' of both while keeping in the ‘pros'. It is still a new technique not much explored since its introduction in 2001. In this chapter both GA and GP is first discussed followed by the elaborate discussion of GEP. This is followed up by the discussion on research work done is different fields using GEP as a tool followed up by GEP architectures. Finally, here GEP has been used for detection of age from facial features as a soft computing based optimization problem using genetic operators.

Intelligent System (IS) can be defined as the system that incorporates intelligence into applications being handled by machines. The chapter extensively discusses the role of Genetic Algorithm (GA) in the search and optimization process along with discussing applications developed so far. A very detailed discussion on the Fuzzy Rule-Based System is presented along with major applications developed in different domains. The chapter presents algorithm of implementing intelligent procedure to decide whether a patient is prone to heart disease or not. The procedure evolves solutions using genetic operators and provides its decision automatically. The chapter presents discussion on the results achieved as a result of prototypical implementation of the evolutionary fuzzy hybrid model. The significant advantage of the presented research work is that applications that do not have any mathematical formulation and still demand optimization can be easily solved using the designed approach.
